Noel Gallagher On High Flying Birds, Retiring, Oasis And More

He's the voice of a generation – but don’t dare call Noel Gallagher a singer- songwriter.

As he heads for No 1 with his brilliant debut solo album, the Manc favourite is very much the reluctant frontman.

Noel is outselling X Factor winner Matt Cardle, 28, two to one in the midweek charts.

And while legions of fans still miss Oasis, the truth is that if Noel hadn’t had that particularly heated row with brother Liam in August 2009, we’d never have heard this collection of immense songs.

During our candid face-to-face chat, it soon becomes clear one thing hasn’t changed as Noel continues to make thinly-veiled digs about his former bandmate.

“If you’ve changed the world once, you can’t do it again, not in your 40s – f*** that,” admits Noel.

“I thought: ‘I’ll have to find a singer, but they’re all f***ing c***suckers.’

“So the only noble path was to go solo and I got around that by calling the act Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – but that’s mainly so when I see it written down it doesn’t freak me out. The High Flying Birds don’t actually exist, it’s just a name.

“I get referred to as a singer-songwriter, which is a dreaded term. I hate it. If anything I’m a songwriter-singer.

“Never mind singer-songwriter, that’s James Morrison or James Blunt – and makes me want to give up.”

In an age in which rap and pop rule the charts, Noel is keeping rock ’n roll alive.

A true icon, charismatic, smart and downright sharp as a pin, he’s written some of the best songs of all time and spouted some of the finest quotes to boot.

His solo record is his best work since Oasis’s triumphant What’s The Story, Morning Glory. And in another jibe at Liam, who fronts new band Beady Eye, Noel, 44, reckons it’s pointless to join a group who will never top Oasis.

He says: “When you’ve been in Oasis, there’s no point making another band.

Oasis took up so much of everyone’s time, I would have had to have put out a solo album in between Oasis records and tours. I don’t think my wife would’ve been too happy if, after a two-year world tour, I’d come home one weekend and said: ‘I’m back off, I’ll see you in a year.’

But there are some tunes which were earmarked for Oasis albums that Noel has kept for himself.

“The two songs that are from the Oasis years are a) really good, b) too good to be left and c) if I don’t put them out now, when am I going to release them? Next album? F*** it, let’s get them out.

“The rest of the songs are post-Oasis,” he added. “Although I was writing them while I was in Oasis they’d never been recorded or demoed or anything.”

While the siblings haven’t formally spoken since their barney in Paris, which saw Liam destroy one of Noel’s guitars, their bitter rows have continued through the press.

Noel accused Liam of bailing out on what would have been the band’s final UK gig – the Virgin Media V Festival in 2009 – because of a hangover.

His younger sibling smashed back and threatened legal action over the claim his laryngitis was a cover-up and wrote “S***BAG” on Twitter the day Noel announced his solo album.

Noel could have put his feet up and lived off royalties but he is refreshingly honest about why he chose not to – so he can line his own pockets now rather than allow his children to reap the rewards.

“What am I going to do, let my kids discover these demos in years to come and say: ‘Get this. We’re rich – the old fart didn’t put these out’?” says Noel.

“I have a duty to put the songs out. The more music that’s in the world the better.” And he freely admits that cash is the only reason his latest single AKA... What A Life is soundtracking the new Vauxhall advert.

“I don’t give a f*** about Vauxhall – it’s not for a free car because I don’t drive,” explains Noel.

“I was only ever thinking of the money.”

Despite the High Flying Birds’success, Noel warns fans to make the most of it.

“I’ll be soon enough retired,” he says.

“There’ll come a day when I don’t want to do it anymore.

“One day I’ll get up and think: ‘F*** this for a game of tennis – can’t be arsed.’”

On October 28th 20011, BBC 4 is having a night devoted to Creation Records.

Upside Down: The Creation Story
On: BBC 4
Date: Friday 28th October 2011
Time: 9:00 pm to 10:40 pm (1 hour and 40 minutes long) (UK Only)

Millions of sales on both sides of the Atlantic, near bankruptcy, pills, thrills, spats, prats, successes, excesses, pick-me-ups and breakdowns - all spiralled together to create some of the most defining music of the 20th century. This is the definitive and fully-authorised documentary of the highs and lows of the UK's most inspired and dissolute independent record label - Creation Records. Over 25 years after Creation's first records, it follows the story from the days of the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Primal Scream and Teenage Fanclub to the Boo Radleys, the Super Furry Animals and of course Oasis, among many, many more. The label's enigmatic founder Alan McGee talks candidly of the trail which led from humble beginnings in Glasgow, via drink and drug dependency to being wined and dined at No 10 Downing Street by Tony Blair.

Creation at the BBC
On: BBC 4
Date: Friday 28th October 2011
Time: 10:40 pm to 11:40 pm (1 hour long) (UK Only)

A trip through the BBC archives from programmes such as Whistle Test, the Oxford Road Show, Top of the Pops and Later with Jools Holland to find some rare and some familiar footage of the bands who were on one of the UK's most seminal and important record labels, Creation Records. There's footage of the Jesus and Mary Chain on Whistle Test in 1985, and from the same year comes The Loft on the Oxford Road Show. The Loft morphed into Pete Astor's next project, the Weather Prophets, who performed on the Whistle Test later that year. My Bloody Valentine nearly bankrupted Creation but produced one of the label's flagship albums, Isn't Anything, while Slowdive were front runners in the 'shoegazing' scene. The 1990s heralded the halcyon days of Creation with the release of Primal Scream's Screamadelica and Oasis signing to the label in 1993. Thus followed a string of chart successes for Creation with Ride, the Boo Radleys, Super Furry Animals, Teenage Fanclub and, of course, Oasis.

Omnibus
On: BBC 4
Date: Friday 28th October 2011
Time: 11:40 pm to 12:30 am (50 minutes long) (UK Only)

Alan Mcgee - The Man Who Discovered Oasis.
A rollercoaster ride through the life and times of the man who has lived the rock 'n' roll dream. Alan McGee almost burned himself out with drugs and drink before finding the biggest band of the 90s, Oasis, and making a million in the process. Abrasive and honest, this is a no-holds-barred portrait of one of the most influential figures in popular music.

Noel Gallagher On Oasis, Beady Eye And Joining Kasabian

"That,” says Noel Gallagher, thrusting his index finger accusingly in the direction of a stray banana skin, “would not last 10 f*cking seconds on my tour bus.”

It’s not that the former Oasis man has an irrational fear of slapstick comedy. He’s just — ShortList is startled to discover — something of a neat freak. His aversion to mess isn’t the only surprising revelation that emerges during the afternoon we spend with the older Gallagher brother. Sat with our Dictaphone perched precariously on his kneecap following an exclusive ShortList photoshoot, Noel is cheerfully letting fly on every subject under the sun, from his new solo project, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, to his distaste for politicians and his late-night lightsaber duels…

You’ve said recently that you’re apprehensive about performing live as a solo artist. Why is that?

I know I can do it — I’m just anxious about what people will expect. It’s inevitably going to be compared to Oasis and I don’t mind that, but Oasis had two frontmen, me and Liam, and now there’s just one. And I’m not really a frontman — I’m a backing vocalist. At Oasis gigs, I would sing one in every six songs — to give Liam’s voice a rest, the poor flower — and that was always a nice change. I just hope people are prepared for me singing for an hour and a half. But I’m trying to get it out of everyone’s heads that I left the band to ‘go solo’. That’s not my preferred explanation for why I’m doing this.

What is your preferred explanation?

I’ve got f*ck all better to do. Seriously, I don’t see it as a career. I’ve never wanted to be a solo artist — I’d still rather be in a band. But you can’t start another band after you’ve been in Oasis. What’s the point? It’s just f*cking ludicrous. I’m doing this because I’m a songwriter and I make records. I’m not going out there to prove anything to anybody.

Liam told ShortList that when people hear your new material, “there’ll be one thing missing — me”. How do you respond to that?

If I was playing live and singing Rock’N’Roll Star and Some Might Say, then people would be thinking, “There’s something missing.” But I’m not — I’m only singing the songs I’m famous for singing. And if people do miss Liam, I’ll bring a little cardboard cut-out of him — a tiny, dwarf-sized one — put a spotlight on it and go, “There he is. Remember him?”

So an Oasis reunion is still the furthest thing from your mind right now?

Liam has said he’d never do it, so I don’t need to add anything more to that.

Have you been working on honing your ‘frontman’ skills?

Well, I’m rooted to the spot because I play guitar. So I won’t be busting any moves on the mic [laughs]. And I hate audience participation in any form. I cringe when I see these bands doing all that “Everybody over here get your hands up!” sh*t. F*ck off. I’m not arsed where I am or even why you lot [the audience] are here. I’ve made a record, you’ve come to see me play it live. The end. Now buy a T-shirt on the way out and f*ck off.

Did you get other bands trying to recruit you after Oasis split? There were rumours that Kasabian asked you to join…

No, that’s nonsense, and I would’ve joined that band in a heartbeat, by the way. But they never asked. I never really got calls off anyone. I never had Bono phoning me, saying, “I’ve always thought The Edge could do with some back-up.” [Laughs] So, if you’re reading this and you’re in a band that sells in excess of 15 to 20 million albums and you need a rhythm guitarist, then… [Coughs and points to himself]. I do interviews, the odd photoshoot, I’m a good laugh and I run a tight tour bus. There you go [laughs].

Have you seen Beady Eye perform live yet?

I’ve seen them on telly. I couldn’t walk into one of their gigs, though, could I? I’d just get f*cking hassled.

Noel Gallagher: 'Liam Likes To Fight'

Noel Gallagher is courting another legal spat with his estranged brother Liam after insisting the former Oasis frontman "thrives on chaos" and loves to start fights.

Gallagher was forced to apologise to the singer earlier this year (11) after Liam filed legal action following defamatory comments his brother made about him in an interview.

The warring brothers have been at loggerheads since Oasis split in 2009, and their feud escalated when Noel claimed the band was forced to pull out of Britain's V Festival two years ago (09) because singer Liam had a hangover.

Noel has since made it clear that the singer was, in fact, suffering from a bout of laryngitis.

But the legal spat hasn't shut Noel up - and now he's attacking his brother's fighting spirit in a new Details magazine interview.

The guitarist says, "Liam's a f**king funny guy. But then there's another side of him, which blows up when he has his drink.

"I can't do violence. What's the point? Especially since we're all of a certain age and, let's face it, quite wealthy. I never started a fight in my entire f**king 44-year-old life. Liam thrives on chaos. It makes him who he is."

Matt Cardle Wishes Noel Gallagher 'All The Best'

X Factor winner Matt Cardle has praised his chart rival Noel Gallagher as "a legend" as the pair go head-to-head in the race for this week's biggest selling album.

Gallagher's debut solo album High Flying Birds looks like landing the top spot on Sunday, with a significant lead over Cardle's new release, Letters.

The ex-Oasis star has so far sold 55,000 copies, while Letters has shifted 28,000, according to the Official Chart Company, although Cardle, 28, is expected to close the gap in the coming days once supermarket sales filter in.

Speaking ahead of a free acoustic show at HMV music store, in Oxford Street, central London, Cardle said: "Noel is quite a legend to be fair. I haven't heard the whole album - I've heard some tracks and they're great - but I wish him all the best."

The rivalry between Cardle and Gallagher's albums has built up during the past few weeks, with Gallagher claiming that he had turned down an offer from Simon Cowell to be an X Factor judge.

Cardle said Cowell had little input into his new album, adding: "I'm really thankful to Simon for letting me go away and write the album as I saw fit. We had a vision for the album quite early on and now it's come to life."

Noel Gallagher Nonplussed By Russell Brand's Wedding Toast

When bad boy Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher married his long-term girlfriend, Sara MacDonald, in June, his brother and former bandmate Liam Gallagher didn't show. (The two haven't spoken in years and are currently embroiled in a libel lawsuit.) Instead, Noel asked buddy Russell Brand be his best man. But Gallagher was not too pleased with Brand's toast.

Gallagher explains in the November issue of Details, "If you weren’t me, it was (bleeping) sidesplitting. He basically said, ‘How is this idiot ending up with that woman? If he wasn’t a (bleeping) rock star, she wouldn’t have looked twice at him.’ It was the first time I’ve ever seen him speak when he didn’t talk about himself. It killed him to talk about me."

Gallagher and MacDonald have two sons together, and Gallagher says he is greatly enjoying family life.

"I started off as many fathers do. I enjoyed the good bits, but I was wary of the responsibility. But now I love being a dad. It’s different with the boys. All they want to do is fight. And I can take on a 4-year-old any day of the week — I will (bleep) you up," he said. "Kids and family life are only as good as your wife, and she’s amazing."

Gallagher's first solo album, "High Flying Birds," will be released in the US on Nov. 8.
