Oasis

Today marks the 15th anniversary of the UK release of Be Here Now
Be Here Now is the third studio album by the English rock band Oasis. Released on August 21 1997, the album was highly anticipated by both music critics and fans as a result of the band's previous worldwide successes with their 1994 debut album Definitely Maybe, and its 1995 follow up (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. The album's pre-release build up led to considerable hype within both the music and mainstream press. At that point, Oasis were at the height of their fame, and Be Here Now became the UK's fastest selling album to date, selling over 420,000 units on the first day of release alone, and over one million within two weeks. As of 2007, the album has sold eight million copies worldwide.
Oasis' management company Ignition were aware of the danger of overexposure, and before its release they sought to control the media's access to the album. Ignition's campaign included limiting pre-release radio airplay, and requesting that journalists sign gag agreements. These tactics resulted in the alienation of members of both the music and mainstream media, as well as many industry members connected with the band. Ignition's attempts to limit pre-release access to the album only served to fuel large scale speculation and publicity within the British music scene.
Artistically Be Here Now failed to live up to the expectations that preceded its release. Although initial reviews were positive, retrospectively the album is viewed by much of the music press and by most members of the band as over-indulgent and bloated. In 2007, Q magazine described Be Here Now as "a disastrous, overblown folly—the moment when Oasis, their judgement clouded by drugs and blanket adulation, ran aground on their own sky-high self-belief." The album's producer Owen Morris said of the recording sessions: "The only reason anyone was there was the money. Noel had decided Liam was a shit singer. Liam had decided he hated Noel's songs [...] Massive amounts of drugs. Big fights. Bad vibes. Shit recordings." None of its songs were included on the band's 2006 "best of" compilation album Stop the Clocks.

Album cover
The cover image to Be Here Now was shot at the Stock Hotel in Hertfordshire in April 1997. It features the band standing outside the hotel surrounded by assorted props. At the centre of the image is a Rolls Royce floating in a swimming pool. The photographer Michael Spencer Johns said the original concept involved shooting each band member in various locations around the world, but when the cost proved prohibitive, the shoot was relocated to the Stock Hotel. Spencer remarked that the shoot "degenerated into chaos", adding that "by 8pm, everyone was in the bar, there were schoolkids all over the set, and the lighting crew couldn't start the generator.
It was Alice in Wonderland meets Apocalypse Now." Despite various meanings people have tried to read into the selection of the cover props, Johns said Gallagher simply selected items from the BBC props store he thought would look good in the picture. Two of the props that had considered thought in their inclusion were the inflatable globe (intended as a homage to the sleeve of Definitely Maybe) and the Rolls Royce, which was suggested by Arthurs. The release date in each region was commemorated on the calendar pictured on the sleeve; Harris said the dating "[encouraged] fans to believe that to buy a copy on the day it appeared was to participate in some kind of historical event."

Pretty Green

Some Might Say that a North Lincolnshire artist is showcasing his work on the Wonderwall of a clothing brand's flagship store.
Lee Coleman, from Messingham, has had two pieces of his work displayed in the Pretty Green store, in Carnaby Street, London, the brand owned by former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher.
Two of Lee's pieces, Easter in Scarborough and It's All About Style, were selected as the chosen images that will hang on the walls.
It was while out on his day job, as a paramedic, that Lee came across the opportunity of displaying his work at the store.
"I went down to London with a patient about six months ago and I was sat on my dinner break literally five minutes away from the shop," he said.
"I popped in and being cheeky I said to them, look I do this artwork and I think it will tie in with what your brand is about.
"Then things went from there.
"I thought, you are never going to knock on my door, so I said they can have them, enjoy them and just see what comes of it."
The two designs are from Lee's Mr Faceless creation.
It involves drawing a large circle for a head, and letting the viewer decide what the expression would be through the surroundings this person finds themselves in.
Lee believes his work is the only artwork that is displayed in any of the brand's stores.
"Most of the images on the walls in the stores are of Liam Gallagher," he said.
"As far as I know I am the only artist to have their work in a Pretty Green store.
"The Pretty Green Label does a lot to promote bands and holds concerts in its stores but does nothing to promote artwork."
A long admirer of the Gallagher brothers' music, Lee is also a big fan of the clothing range.
"I have always like the Gallagher music through the 90s but I was always more of an armchair fan," he said.
"I do own a lot of Pretty Green clothing and in it you can see the musical influences that the Gallagher brothers have had over it.
"It is a really forward thinking brand."
The news comes at what has been a busy few months for the artist.
He has been busy preparing for his three month exhibition at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery, where he will have between 30 and 40 pictures on display.
He has also filmed a short television documentary focusing on his life in Scunthorpe, his professional career as a paramedic and his artwork.

Sue Johnston went on the lash with the rock wildman - and drank so much she missed a flight.
Royle Family star Sue Johnston has revealed she went on the lash with rock wildman Liam Gallagher – and drank so much she missed a flight.
Sue, 68, who is about to appear in Coronation Street, bumped into the ex-Oasis frontman at Heathrow.
The unlikely pair got on so well they hit the bar.
And they were still there when Sue’s plane left without her.
Liverpool supporter Sue bonded with Manchester City fanatic Liam, 39, over their shared love of football and music.
She recalls: “I was flying to Tibet a few years ago to film a documentary and I met Liam in the bar at Heathrow. We started chatting about City, Liverpool, football generally and The Beatles.
“Liam is such a John Lennon fanatic and because I met The Beatles at the time it all kicked off, we became absorbed. One drink led to another and I missed the flight. Thankfully they got me another the following day.”

Oasis
The Killers

The Killers covered Oasis' classic 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and offered a small preview of their forthcoming fourth album 'Battle Born' as they brought the first night of V Festival in Staffordshire to a close.
Opening with new single 'Runaways', the Nevada band only played one other song from their new album, a track titled 'Miss Atomic Bomb', but both songs were met with approval from the packed crowd.
Although the new material was well-received, the crowd reserved their biggest cheers of the set for 'Somebody Told Me', 'All These Things That I've Done' and 'Mr Brightside', all of which became huge sing-a-longs with the packed crowd.
As well as this, midway through the set, singer Brandon Flowers addressed the crowd and said "We're going to pay tribute to one of the UK's finest'' before launching into a cover of Oasis' 1995 classic 'Don't Look Back In Anger', accompanied by only a single guitar.
