Review And Gallery: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In Kansas

Though it wasn’t officially billed as one, Thursday’s show at the Midland theater featured co-headliners.

Snow Patrol played the evening’s final slot, but it was clear that many of the 1,300 or so fans were there to see the second of three bands: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

The double bill turned out to be a blessing after a mechanical issue shortened Snow Patrol’s set.

Gallagher was the main songwriter, lead guitarist and singer with the British rock band Oasis, which called it quits in 2009. This year he launched the Birds, his first post-Oasis solo project. Oasis hadn’t been in Kansas City since a show at Memorial Hall in 1994, so there was plenty of anticipation among the group’s fans.

He is touring off the Birds’ self-titled first album, a collection of songs that bear many of the traits of his Oasis material: big guitars, lovelorn lyrics, thick harmonies and sweet, sticky melodies. His hour-long set featured several Birds tracks, but not before he fed the early arrivals a treat: “It’s Good to be Free,” an Oasis B-side. (It appeared some people were surprised by Gallagher’s 8:10 p.m. start, apparently figuring he was the headliner.)

From there Gallagher and his band turned to the “Birds” album, starting with “Everybody’s On the Run,” a gust of British anthem-rock with a slight psychedelic accent, then “Let the Lord Shine a Light on Me” and “If I had a Gun,” a heart-on-the-sleeve love ballad (“If I had a gun/I’d shoot a hole in the sun/And love would burn this city down for you.”)

But Gallagher was happy to indulge those who came to hear songs from the band that made him (and his brother, Liam) famous and infamous. The acoustic version of “Wonderwall” was nice; the closer, “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” now 17 years old, generated lots of singing and faraway, nostalgic gazes.

Gallagher also tossed in some lesser-known songs and B-sides: “Talk Tonight” and “(I Wanna Live in a Dream in my) Record Machine,” an Oasis song that appears on the “Birds” album. Throughout his set, he was crusty but congenial, chatting and sparring lightly with his crowd up front. It wasn’t an Oasis show, but for those of us who never saw his band, it was a satisfying substitute.

Thursday’s show was the fourth time in five years or so that Snow Patrol has performed in Kansas City. A couple of those shows, especially its first at the Uptown Theater, were exceptional. They are a suitable paring with Gallagher’s band; their music shares some of the same traits. Gary Lightbody, the band’s lead singer, is a dynamic frontman, the type who can rev up a crowd and stoke the mood inside a big room.

Things were going well for about a half-dozen songs, including “Hands Open,” “Take Back This City” and “This Isn’t Everything You Are.” Then something went awry on stage. Lightbody seemed flustered and distressed, and the band continued to perform a half-acoustic set, he without his guitar. After the show, Lightbody’s Twitter message said: “Thanks Kansas City for your warmth. It wasn’t the show we wanted to give you but after the guitar systems went down we gave you all we had.”

To the band’s credit, with sport and grace, it made the best of a situation that could have ended the show. Instead it delivered a few of its big numbers, such as “Chasing Cars” and “Just Say Yes.” There was even an encore: “Life-ning.”

In the end, Snow Patrol played an 11-song set that lasted a bit more than an hour. Lightbody apologized a few times for what happened and thanked the crowd for its patience. But it’s unlikely too many people who were there will look back on this night in anger. The other headliner made certain of that.

Pretty Green's Pat Salter On Working With Liam Gallagher And More

As head of design at Pretty Green, Pat Salter is Liam Gallagher's right hand man, charged with turning the Beady Eye frontman's vision into a wearable reality. The former head of denim development at Ted Baker, Salter was appointed after a chance meeting with Liam in London last year. During his tenure, he has kicked the three-year-old brand up a gear, introducing the smarter Black Label line as well as expanding the denim offering from three pairs of jeans to a whole range of hard-wearing workwear.

GQ.com talked to the designer to pick his brain about what is like to work with one of the most outspoken individuals in British music.

GQ.com: How does the creative process work between you and Liam?
Pat Salter: Liam's a very hands-on boss. At the beginning of the season we have a design meeting and discuss where his head's at with the collections - what sort of mood he's feeling and what he's into at that particular time. Then I go away and create a mood board around those ideas. Unfortunately I can't buy the amount of clothes that he does but he has a huge archive of clothing that he selects from his wardrobe to build the collection around. He doesn't sit there drawing, but he's got a lot of ideas - being in a band, he's a creative guy.

Who is your best-dressed British man?
It's got to be Brian Jones. Obviously if you dressed like that now you wouldn't get very far walking down your local high street, but every picture of him is cool. I also like late Sixties/early Seventies Michael Caine. You've got to throw Michael Caine in there too. Don't get me wrong, that's not how I dress - I don't walk around with big floppy rabbit fur hats with feathers in them, but you can't deny how great those guys looked: clashing shoes, clashing patterns, clashing fabrics, velvet, corduroy. It was chaos, but it worked.

What are the five items a man should have in his wardrobe?
Firstly, a decent pair of well-fitting selvedge jeans from Japan. Not a reproduction pair - a real hardcore pair of wear-in-yourself Japanese jeans. Then a white v-neck T-shirt and a cool bit of outerwear (I would go for a Stone Island CP parka). On the shoe front you need a pair of classic sneaker pumps. Finally you need a slim-fitting black suit tucked away in your wardrobe that can be worn at smarter events.

Who is your Bond of choice?
Straight away my brain went to Sean Connery, but I'm going for Roger Moore. Those tailored suits with nipped-in waists and pastel colours: you couldn't wear his stuff unless you were a make-believe secret agent.

Will Pretty Green ever do black tie?
Liam goes to a lot of smarter events these days, so, I can't definitely say yes, but it's a distinct possibility.

What is the most stylish film and why?
Get Carter is the obvious answer, but I'm going to say Star Wars. Just look at the Stormtroopers: those costumes are as cool today as they were when they came out in the Seventies.

Can you recommend a good book?
Ideas from Massimo Osti. He was the brains behind a lot of great brands - including my favourite, Stone Island CP -  and this is a photographic biography of his genius. Sad times, good book.

What do you have planned next?
We want to do more on the accessories side of things - we have a completely new shoe range launching next season which is exciting. The next big thing is our showing at London Collections: Men in January…

After Liam presented his GQ Men Of The Year award, will we be seeing Bradley Wiggins in the next campaign?
They struck up quite a rapport at the GQ Awards, didn't they? Wiggins is a dude and he's into the same scene as us, but as to whether he'll do stuff with us? Watch this space.

No Means No: Noel Gallagher Will Never, Ever Revisit Oasis

My first post-Oasis earful came last year from Liam Gallagher as he toured Beady Eye, a band comprised of three-fourths of Oasis minus singer Liam’s guitarist brother Noel.

After 18 years together in Oasis, the Gallagher brothers had topped the charts (“Wonderwall,” “Champagne Supernova”) and altered the course of rock and roll. But they were 18 contentious years. The Gallaghers fought constantly, and at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris in 2009 another backstage dust-up turned out to be their last. Noel stormed out. Oasis was over.

Inevitable solo projects followed. Liam and the others came and went as Beady Eye. “We’re not lacking anything,” he assured me. (Except a hit.)

Noel, now 45, stalled a while, then produced a solo album and now a lengthy tour under the moniker Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. The latter debut went platinum in England but hasn’t fared as well in the States.

Which may explain why Gallagher — once one of the biggest rock stars in the world — this weekend not only shares a double bill with the middling band Snow Patrol, but shares it at a casino in Chicago’s hinterlands.

The second earful — much funnier, by the way — came from Noel a few weeks ago. Adding to our conversation, a curious headline had appeared days earlier in the British music mag NME: “Liam Gallagher ‘would reform Oasis tomorrow.’ ” The article claimed everybody wanted the reunion and only Noel stood in its way.

Judging by Noel’s quip-tastic banter, fans shouldn’t hold their breath.

Question: You were the guitarist in Oasis, not often up front at the mike. What have you learned about becoming a front man?

Noel Gallagher: You know the [Maroon 5] song “Moves Like Jagger”? I don’t have them. I have moves like Wyman. I didn’t know what to expect when I first stepped up front. I thought, well, this’ll be weird for people. I haven’t really learned anything, but it’s reinforced my belief that what I always thought is true: It’s all about the songs. The songs are the show. Groups are about the razzmatazz, but when you go see a solo artist like Neil Young or Bob Dylan or Paul McCartney or Bowie or me, you know, you’re there to hear the songs. If you do that, that’s it. Unless, you know, you’re Madonna or Lady Gaga, but who gives a f--- about that? You don’t go to see Neil Young dance.

Q. I’ve heard you talk about Oasis naturally falling into what you call “the trap of stadium rock.” Why is that inevitable at a certain level?

NG: You get to the point of selling out stadiums, and that’s how your success is measured, subconsciously by you and everybody else. So you want to stay there, you know what I mean? People come to see you in stadiums, they want stadium rock. There’s nowhere left for you to go. So you’re expected to try and keep that going. It’s f-----g amazing, amazing, but don’t tell me the next Green Day album sounds different than the last three, not that anybody gives a f---. It was the same with Oasis. You start a rock band and the goal is to play stadiums. You get there, and you’re stuck there. Any movement from that point is considered a failure. You don’t get to say, “We need to f--- this off and go back to playing clubs,” because you just can’t. It’s a trap — an enjoyable one, but it puts an unnecessary ceiling on creativity.

Q. I interviewed Liam last year, and I asked him what the backstage fight in 2009 was about. He said, “You’d have to ask Noel.” So I’m asking: What was it about?

NG: Let’s see if I can recall. He’d not turned up for the previous gig, [the V Festival] in England. He caught a lot of flak in the press over it — we all did, but he got most of it. He’s a little bit like Hitler, Liam. Hitler thought there was a world conspiracy against the Germans, and Liam thinks there’s a world conspiracy against him, perpetrated by me through the press.

Q. But you and Liam fought all the time. What made that fight the clincher for the band?

NG: It was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. What makes an alcoholic give up drink after years of drinking? Going to the festival site that day, I had no intention of leaving the group. I was thinking about the next Oasis record. But after that, you know, I said f--- this. I didn’t particularly want to go solo. But I just said f--- it. That’s it, f--- it. A healthy dose of f--- it every now and then is good. It forces you into things you maybe should have done in the first place. Was it that bad? No. Had there been worse fights? Yeah.

Q. Have there been any moments of regret?

NG: No, and I don’t mean that in a callous way. But, no. There was a huge fracas in the dressing room, sh-- was smashed up. I went and sat in my car outside. The driver had the engine running. A big scene was going on inside. I sat there for what must have been a minute or two, but it felt like a lifetime. In that space of time, everything that had happened and was going to happen was flashing before my eyes. I made the decision. If I told the driver to drive, then it was finished. All the people in the field will go on. It’ll cost us millions. Or I could sit here, calm down, and do the gig. It’ll be f-----g awful. Again, I thought, f--- it, and I said, “Drive.”

Q. You may not think about it, but Liam might. You saw the recent NME story?

NG: Yeah, well, unfortunately in the two years after I left the band, everyone else’s tune was very different. They were quite bullish about it. All the people in Beady Eye were saying, “Oasis ran its course, we’re glad we’re out of it, we’re more creative now.” OK, fine, if that’s the way they feel. But don’t come to me in three years when your sh-- has well and truly gone down the toilet. I’ve seen Liam, Gem [Archer] and Chris [Shamrock] since then, and when I’ve seen them [the idea of a reunion] has never been mentioned.

Q. Is anyone besides journalists like me asking you about this?

NG: Nobody gives a sh--. I do realize that the only way to get people to stop asking me about it is to do it. But I’m stubborn. If it’s the last thing I do, I won’t do it. To re-form it, how could it be as good? People say they want it to happen because they’re younger and they missed us. Tough sh--. I’ve never seen the Sex Pistols or the Beatles. I still haven’t seen Bob Dylan, thank God.

Q. So what’s your future look like then?

NG: I’m going to try and fake my own retirement and see how it goes. I’ve tried disappearing, but I’ve got too big a nose to disappear, really. I always get recognized, even if I dress like an Eskimo. I’m not going to do anything. Watch a lot of TV. What I might do is hope against hope that that guy beats Obama in the election.

Q. Beg pardon?

NG: We don’t get enough laughs out of Obama. We liked George Bush. He was funny as f---. The comedy value would be great with Romney. Not for you guys, though.

Francis Rossi Wishes Oasis Tried To Last A Bit Longer

Status Quo lead singer Francis Rossi is offering some tough love to defunct band Oasis.

The 63-year-old thinks Noel, and Liam Gallagher, 45 and 40 respectively, should act their age.

“I just wish they’d tried to last a bit longer,” says Francis who is set to give fans access to new footage of Status Quo in a new documentary Hello Quo.

“Are Liam and Noel really brothers? I can understand a sibling rivalry when they’re in their mid-20s but they should be over all that. And if not then what sad cases they are.”

Another On This Day In Oasis History...

Wonderwall is a song by English rock band Oasis, written by the band's guitarist and chief songwriter Noel Gallagher. Released as the third single from (What's the Story) Morning Glory? on October 30th 1995.

Wonderwall peaked at number two in the UK Singles Charts and proved to be their American breakthrough, reaching number eight on the Hot 100 and giving them their only top-ten hit in the US thus far.

Wonderwall is perhaps their most popular song, despite the fact that British TV stars Robson & Jerome's "I Believe"/"Up on the Roof" kept it out of the top slot. Wonderwall continues to have enduring popularity in Oasis's canon; as of 2008, it was 76th in the UK's list of best-selling singles, and has now sold over a million copies in single and download sales in the UK, where it went platinum.

The song is included on Oasis's compilation album Stop the Clocks.

Background

The song takes its name from the 1968 album Wonderwall Music by George Harrison, at the time still a member of the Beatles.[3] Harrison's album was in fact a soundtrack to the film Wonderwall, but the film has remained unknown by the general public. The original title of the track was "Wishing Stone".

It is often claimed that "Wonderwall" was written for Gallagher's then-girlfriend, Meg Mathews. Noel married Mathews in 1997, but the couple divorced four years later. Gallagher now claims that the song was not about Mathews at all, but he felt he had to go along with the rumour, saying "The meaning of that song was taken away from me by the media who jumped on it. How do you tell your Mrs it's not about her once she's read it is? It's a song about an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself."

Recording

The song was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales, during a two-week recording of the 'Morning Glory' album in May 1995. According to producer Owen Morris, the song was completed in 6-8 hours.

Morris claimed that Gallagher had presented an alternative arrangement of the song "which had some extra complicated pre-bridge bits that didn't have singing or melody - but just had some chord changes - which seemed completely unnecessary", the night before it was recorded. This idea was quickly shelved.

Noel initially wanted to sing this song on (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, but he gave his brother Liam Gallagher the choice, and Noel ended up singing "Don't Look Back in Anger".

Live performances

Noel debuted the song on UK TV, backstage at Glastonbury and broadcast on Channel 4 on June 24, 1995. The song wasn't performed by the band during their headline performance the night before.

In August 2002, Noel changed the arrangement of his live performances of the song to a style admittedly heavily-influenced by Ryan Adams' cover version of the song. This arrangement has continued to his most recent live performances of the song. When the full band performs the song live, with electric guitars, it's still in the original style as presented on the record. During the 2008 tour, however the band have return to performing the song in a semi acoustic form.

A live version of the song, recorded at Wembley Stadium in 2000, is featured on the band's live album Familiar To Millions.

In an interview with Q magazine in August 2008, Liam said that he hates performing the song: "I can't stand that fucking song, every time I have to sing it, I want to gag. Problem is 'Wonderwall' was a big big tune for us and so you go to America and they're like, 'Are you Mr Wonderwall?', and you want to chin someone."

Video

The music video to the song was filmed in the relatively brief period when bassist Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan quit the band due to nervous exhaustion; Scott McLeod came in to replace him.

Cover art

The sleeve artwork was inspired by the paintings of the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, and was shot on Primrose Hill in north London. The hand holding the frame is that of art director Brian Cannon; the woman is Anita Heryet, a Creation Records employee. The original idea was to have Liam in the frame before Noel vetoed that idea whilst the shoot was taking place.

Chart history

It reached No.2 in the UK charts.

In the US it also peaked at #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart for an unprecedented ten weeks (this amount was later eclipsed in 1998 by Marcy Playground), and reached #8 on the Hot 100.

Awards and accolades

In 1995, "Wonderwall" came in at number one in the national Australian music poll, the Triple J Hottest 100.

The promo video for "Wonderwall", directed by Nigel Dick, won the Best British Video award at the 1996 BRIT Awards.

In the Grammy Awards of 1997 the band received a nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and Noel Gallagher picked another nomination for Best Rock Song, winning none.

In 2003, VH1 ranked the song at number 95 in its countdown of the "100 Greatest Songs Of The Past 25 Years."

In May 2005, "Wonderwall" was voted the best British song of all time, in a poll of over 8,500 listeners conducted by Virgin Radio.

The song "Wonderwall" placed 105 of the 3000 top songs of all time on the website acclaimedmusic.net.

In August 2006, "Wonderwall" was named the second-greatest song of all time in a poll conducted by Q Magazine, finishing behind another Oasis song, "Live Forever".

In 2006, U2's guitarist The Edge named "Wonderwall" one of the songs he most wishes he'd written.

In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Wonderwall" at number 27 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.

In December 2007, it came in number 35 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90's countdown.

In early 2007, "Wonderwall"'s drumming, provided by Alan White, was voted 90th best drumming track ever in Modern Drummer magazine.
