Noel Gallagher On U2's Live Shows

Noel Gallagher might be busy touring with his High Flying Birds, but he had a chance to catch U2 live in San Jose on Wednesday night (May 20) … and he didn’t just attend the gig, but he loved it and compared it to “theater.”

“It starts off as a punk rock gig but then it gets intimate, there’s a lot of truth in it about where they come from and the people that they are,” he told U2.com, saying he was touched by the images of Bono‘s mom and kids.

Gallagher also went into detail about a screen that plays “inside of a video screen and it’s something else, it’s like watching a television but you kind of forget sometimes that they are actually there on stage and they are playing live. It’s a psychedelic experience.”

When he first heard about this screen, Gallagher admitted that he had no idea what the band was talking about. However, once he finally got to see it in person he felt like it was a “game changer, not only for them but for shows in general. It is something completely different.”

He also added, “You don’t expect to have that screen in that position and doing that thing … and the beauty of it all is that it still does not take away from what a great band they are.”

The Oasis member also admitted that he’s been a fan since 1983 when he heard “New Year’s Day” and has seen U2 numerous times. “With the greatest respect in the world when I saw the 360 [Degree] Tour I thought that was the end of something, and not in a bad way,” he said. “I thought, this is so staggering and huge and tall, so amazing, I thought this was the end of something and I wondered what the beginning of the next thing will be — and here it is.”

Noel also revealed he will be back to catch another U2 concert soon.

Noel Gallagher On The Drinking Skills Of Bono, Morrissey And Bobby Gillespie

Noel Gallagher—who recently said he’s lost “a f–king shitload of money” since Oasis split and, in potentially related news, advised One Direction’s Zayn Malik to “f–kin’ get a good accountant because life is very f–kin’ long”—is back with more colorful insights about the rock world.

Rock critic and editor of The Quietus John Doran interviewed Gallagher for Noisey’s The British Masters series and asked him who could drink more: Morrissey, Bono, or Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie. Gallagher responded with a predictably entertaining answer:

Bono, hands down. Bobby don’t drink. Morrissey is good crack. He can drink, and remains—doesn’t really get drunk though—he remains equally as vicious from the f—king minute you meet him until seven hours later. I lighten up once I’ve had a drink. Not Morrissey.

But Bono, he is really f—king brilliant company. I’ve been drinking with him, and I’ve been leaving a bar at 6 in the morning and he’s on the bar singing opera. And he’s got a f—king gig the following night with 70,000 people. And I’m being escorted out like James Brown—f—king pissed.

Noel Gallagher On Jay Z's Streaming Service Tidal

Noel Gallagher has taken aim at Jay Z's streaming service Tidal. saying "I don't sell enough records for that shite."

Asked by Noisey's John Doran about his throught on the lavish launch Gallagher seemed particularly unimpressed. He took particular exception to Alicia Keys introduction at the New York launch.
"Alicia Keys is up there giving a speech, like something out of the UN," said Gallagher. "I think 'This has got to be fucking bollocks. Nonsense!' I'm not surprised nobody's been bothered with it."

It echoes Gallagher's recent comments he made to Rolling Stone regarding his concerns for the service. "I think ultimately that the spiel they came out with, it was like, "Do these people think they're the fuckin' Avengers? They're going to save the fuckin' [world]." I was speaking to Chris [Martin] the day after, and I said, "Are you after a Nobel Peace Prize? Is that what you're after?" They were like, "We're going to fuckin' save the music business." And I'm just sitting there, thinking [imitates smoking weed] you might want to write a decent chorus for a fuckin' start. Never mind fuckin' royalties and the "power of music." Write a tune. Fuckin' start with that."

Gallagher's comments come in the wake of a number of artists casting doubt on the service. Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard recently said: “I think they totally blew it by bringing out a bunch of millionaires and billionaires and propping them up onstage and then having them all complain about not being paid.” Similarly Billy Corgan cast doubt about how Tidal was marketed as beneficial for all artists. "To try and sell it as an altruistic thing is disingenuous because it's not. He is taking his slice of the pie, which he has every right to do -- he is a powerful man and he works with powerful people....To sell it as altruistic - I don't buy it." My Morning Jacket's Jim James went one step further describing it as 'elitist and weird'.

Noel Gallagher will have a spectacular summer ahead of him including summer headline spots at Latitude Festival, Calling Festival and Summer In The City. He's also would rather that people would stop ask him about the Oasis reunion everyone is expecting.

Noel Gallagher On The Last Days Of Oasis And The Rivalry With His Brother

Noel Gallagher has discussed the last days of Oasis and the intense rivalry with his brother.

In a new interview with Noisey, writer Jon Doran asks Noel Gallagher about Wibbling Rivalry (a recording of Oasis having an argument from 1994) which prompts the songwriter to remember the last days of Oasis. "If I think back to it now....my argument is 'Be a cunt all you want... but let's do the gig first and then be a fucking dick'. His argument is 'I'm just being a dick all the time'. Repeat endlessly until fucking 2009."

Gallagher remembers that on a number of occasions he would be left to appease audience members during Oasis performances. "I remember countless gigs where three songs in he'd just pop his fucking headphones out and just get off. You'd be doing a guitar solo and you'd get to the end of the song and think 'It's not that mad for him just to disappear during the guitar solo and not sing the rest of the song - he's obviously gone back to fix his sunglasses or something'.

"Then you'd just go 'Where's Liam gone?' He's got off. What do you mean he's got off? He's got a sore throat.  What a cunt. Then you've got to go out and say in English to a perplexed Japanese people...  'I know you don't understand what I'm fucking saying but what' I'm saying is the singer has got off' [applause]. 'So I'm going to have to sing the rest of the song' [applause]. And then you start singing and they're all like 'What the fuck is going on here? Where's the singer gone?'"
Noel added: "I could never forgive him for that. Ever."

On This Day In Oasis History...

Lyla is a song by the English rock band Oasis. The song was released on May 16th 2005 as the first single from the band's sixth album Don't Believe the Truth.

The song was written by Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, who has varyingly described the track as "specifically designed for pogoing", "annoyingly catchy", and the "poppiest thing since Roll with It".

Gallagher says that the song existed in an early form as a song called Sing and dated from the Heathen Chemistry-era. He also says that the title for the final song should have been Smiler, but was changed seeing as guitarist Gem Archer's previous band, Heavy Stereo, also had a song called "Smiler".

Sony's insistence that it should be released as the first single from the album has helped to fuel the tension between the band and their record label, which has led to Oasis not renewing their contract with the record label following the release of Don't Believe the Truth.

Lyla became the band's seventh UK number one when it reached top spot in its first week of release. The song also debuted at #31 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart and has reached #19 since then. It is the first Oasis song to appear on any US singles chart since 2000 when Go Let It Out hit number 14 on the Modern Rock chart.

Noel has also joked with the fact that the Lyla in the song is actually the sister of the Sally mentioned in the Oasis single Don't Look Back in Anger. Also, he had said that the song is a "love song", being about Sally Cinnamon's sister.

Originally claiming that he wasn't very fond of the song, Noel has said that Lyla "isn't even the fifth best track on the album". The song had existed as a demo since the early recording sessions for the album but was all but forgotten until practically the last minute. However, on the Lock the Box feature on the Stop the Clocks, Noel admitted that he "didn't realise how good it was until [we] played it live," and admitted he loved the "guitars, the drums, and the vocals" of the song.

Live performances

When performing on the UK music chart show Top of the Pops, Liam, who was forced to mime to the music, made no secret of the fact, walking away from the microphone with his mouth closed mid-way through lines that he was supposedly 'singing'. It would be Liam's last performance on the programme before its demise in late 2006. However, Noel and the rest of the band would return in August 2005 to perform The Importance of Being Idle and later in 2009 to perform their last ever released single Falling Down.

Lyla was covered by the Foo Fighters during a performance at BBC Studios.

The song is included on Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks. It is also included in FIFA 06 as a track.

Paul Weller And Noel Gallagher To Work On A Project Together

The 56-year-old mod rocker has revealed he has thought up a "really good idea" for a collaborative project with his pal, former Oasis star Noel, but they have struggled to find a time to record together.

He said: "It could be really good ... hopefully it will happen anyway. We've both got different writing styles. I'm quite up for it."

The 'Broken Stones' hitmaker continued to say the pair were keen to produce new music to appear on the former The Jam guitarist's new LP, 'Saturns Pattern' - his first release since 2012's 'Sonik' - but never got round to hitting the studio to work on any of the concepts.

He explained: "We have been trying to write some things together, and we've still got a really good idea but it just never made the record."

As well as speaking about a collaboration with the 47-year-old musician - with whom he has worked on numerous records in the past - Paul confessed he prefers Noel Gallagher's solo music over his extensive back catalogue with Oasis.

He told the Daily Star newspaper: "If I'm really honest I think Noel's (new solo) record and the one before are his best work.

"Obviously I'm biased as he's my mate but I'm impressed by the writing more than anything else."
