Noel Gallagher Says There Will Never Be Another Oasis

Never one to shy away from telling people like it is, Britpop icon Noel Gallagher has been giving his opinion on the state of music industry ahead of his headline performance at T in the Park on Sunday.

Speaking to the Daily Record, the former Oasis songwriter in chief was reflecting on his first appearance at the festival, some 21 years ago.

“When we were young we were a lot cooler than this generation, let’s put it that way,” said Gallagher. “Forget this generation, they’re lost. Imagine the next generation. Can you? I can’t. I’d rather not.”

The 48 year-old went onto discuss the issues with record label control and stated his belief that there would never be another band like Oasis as a result.

“There won’t be another music revolution because commerce and big business doesn’t allow revolution.Taylor Swift will still be going in 20 years but she’ll be called something else. She won’t be going. It’ll be someone else. But there will never be another Oasis, I can tell you that. Never in a million years. Five lads from a council estate who wanted to be as big as the Beatles and were big enough to say it. Never.”

Despite numerous rumours since the band split up in 2009, Gallagher Snr has always denied there will be an Oasis reunion, saying that they would only ever get back together for the money. Despite the split, his solo act, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, has been hugely successful. His two albums have been generally well received and the latest effort, Chasing Yesterday, released in February, is the biggest selling vinyl of the year so far.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds headline the main stage at T in the Park on Sunday and is one of 15 acts we’ve picked out to watch at this year’s festival.

Noel Gallagher On The New Global Release Date For Albums

Noel Gallagher has given his take on today's new global release date for albums, saying: "Unfortunately, it won't make shit albums any better, will it?"

The IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) revealed the news in a statement on their website earlier in the year, in a decision which they say was made "following consultation with artists, musicians unions, record companies and retailers."

Before today, release days varied from country to country, which the IFPI said caused frustration for consumers when music fans in other parts of the world could access new releases before them.
The move hasn't been universally welcomed though - Beggar's Group founder Martin Millis told Music Week that a Friday release day would eliminate "one of the trading week’s two peaks, and the ability to re-stock and rectify errors before the week’s second peak."

He added, "I fear their consultation has been a charade, and the market leaders were always going to push this through. I fear this move will also lead to a market in which the mainstream dominates, and the niche, which can be tomorrow’s mainstream, is further marginalised. I fear it will further cement the dominance of the few – and that that is exactly what it is intended to do."

In a new interview with NME, Noel Gallagher has weighed in on the change in policy, saying, "Fucking hell, the world's gone fucking mad on it. Some fucker has focus grouped that in a room somewhere to maximise some amount of record sales: 'If we have it on a Friday, then by the time it gets to Monday we'll already have sold a million albums - if one is Taylor Swift, presumably."

He added, "Unfortunately it won't make shit albums any better, will it? They'll still sound shit on a fucking Friday."

Today (10 July) marks the first ever global release day. Albums released today include Years & Years' Communion, Four Tet's Morning/Evening and Prides' The Way Back Up.

Next week sees Noel Gallagher headline Latitude Festival, which takes place at Henham Park in Suffolk from 16-19 July. For tickets and more information, visit here.

Is Liam Gallagher Working With Lee Mavers?

When Beady Eye split up in October 2014, many Oasis fans hoped it would be the catalyst to bring the Gallagher brothers back together. Despite reports earlier in the year that Liam and Noel have patched things up, rumours that the iconic Manchester band are getting back together remain unconfirmed.

While Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are currently on tour in support of second album Chasing Yesterday, recent public sightings of the youngest Gallagher brother have been restricted to an appearance at a charity football match in Italy and a performance of ‘My Generation’ on the 20th anniversary edition of TV show TFI Friday.

However, Gigslutz has heard a rumour that Gallagher is itching to return to music and is working with Lee Mavers of The La’s. According to a source close to the Liverpool band, the two frontmen are working together to write an album. We don’t have any details on what the music sounds like or what form it might take, but given Maver’s reticence when it comes to releasing new music, don’t expect the results to appear anytime soon.

Noel Gallagher On T In The Park, Oasis, Kanye West, Coldplay, Primal Scream, David Guetta And More

Festival veteran Gallagher will close this year's T in the Park on Sunday and has been as outspoken as ever ahead of his trip north.

Noel Gallagher is likely to be disappointed in Saturday’s main stage headliner at T in the Park – because he thought Avicii was the name of his local restaurant.

Noel’s band High Flying Birds will close Scotland’s biggest music festival on Sunday’s main stage.
But he had never heard of the Swedish superstar DJ who’ll take that spot 24 hours before him.
“You can have Avicii, whoever that is,” Noel said. “All I’ve heard is his name.

“I thought it was a restaurant around where I live if I’m being honest. Is it a band or is it a guy? Is it like a David Guetta thing? I mean, holy s**tballs. I’m just glad I won’t be there to see that.”

The former Oasis rocker also joked the picturesque Strathallan site could be transformed into something resembling a warzone by the time he closes the festival on Sunday night.

“It’s going to be like World War I by the time I get there,” he said.
“But I’m looking forward to it.

“T in the Park is f***ing great.

“I love that festival.”

The British rock legend, who is married to Edinburgh-born PR boss Sara MacDonald, played the first ever T in the Park with Oasis back in 1994, in the King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut tent.

Oasis returned to headline the main stage in 2002 and a decade later Noel made his T debut with his own band, High Flying Birds.

He also surprised fans when he joined Paul Weller on the main stage in 2001.

“I’ve seen some great gigs there including Stereophonics,” Noel said.

“I went up there once to hang out with Sara for the weekend when she was working at the festival.

“I remember being with Sara watching Coldplay and the two of us looking at each other and thinking, that band are going to be f***ing massive.

“Paul Weller was doing his acoustic thing.

“He blagged me to get up and do a few songs with him.

“The two of us were f**ing roaring drunk onstage. It was funny.”

He added: “A music festival nowadays reflects everybody’s iPod. You look and ask yourself, is this line up on shuffle or what?

“It doesn’t make any sense, but that’s the modern world.

“In the 60s, everybody was of a certain way of thinking.

“Now musical thought is so fragmented.”

Noel, 48, will be playing songs from both the self-titled High Flying Birds album and follow-up Chasing Yesterday, as well as solo material and choice tracks from his time with Oasis.

Looking back on the music scene when Oasis first played T in the Park, he said: “It’s wrong to say it was better then.

“It’s just this generational thing, though, I thought it was better than.

“Then again I was better then and I was younger then.

“When we were young we were a lot cooler than this generation, let’s put it that way.

“You and I are roughly the same age and the people we liked or that we were brought up listening to, like Joy Division, New Order, Morrissey, Mark E. Smith and Paul Weller, were influenced by people who were also great and slowly but surely the world has watered it down.

“Forget this generation, they’re lost.

“Imagine the next generation. Can you? I can’t.

“I’d rather not.

“My 15-year old daughter, there’s hope for her.

“She asked me about the Stone Roses the other day.

“But my two sons? Lord knows what nonsense they’ll be into.”

Noel believes the problem stems from record companies having too much control.

He added: “Everybody now is signed to major label and they all pander to the radio and everybody sounds the same on the radio.

“Alternative thinking is disappearing. It’s a sad day when people tell me I’m so outspoken and controversial.

“Why, for stating the f***ing obvious?

“There won’t be another music revolution because commerce and big business doesn’t allow revolution.

“It likes the same, the same, the same – Taylor Swift.

“Taylor Swift will still be going in 20 years but she’ll be called something else.

“She won’t be going. It’ll be someone else. But there will never be another Oasis, I can tell you that.
“Never in a million years.

“Five lads from a council estate who wanted to be as big as the Beatles and were big enough to say it. Never.”

NOEL ON KANYE WEST

“He’s nearly as good as me in interviews, but he takes himself too seriously. I’ve never met the guy, right, and Lord knows what he’s like. But I like him. His music is not what I would listen to though I do like Black Skinhead.
“That’s a f***ing great track.”

NOEL ON PRIMAL SCREAM

“If we go back a generation, Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes weren’t trying to do something different.
“They were different themselves.
“They were different people with alternative thought.
“Bobby is always trying to be as good as his heroes.
“So is Innes and Andrew Weatherall.”

NOEL ON BEING AN ELDER STATESMAN OF ROCK

“Do I feel it?
“No, I don’t feel like an elder statesman.
“I’m not the elder statesman as long as Paul Weller is around.
“He’s elder than me.
“Print that. He’ll f**ing hate that.
“I feel like I’m just starting off, if anything.
“I know I have a better set of songs to choose from than, say, George Ezra, but I’ve only put my second album out. So I don’t feel anything like that.”

Noel Gallagher Dominates Vinyl Sales In The UK

Gallagher’s High Flying Birds top sales of both albums and singles on vinyl during the first half of the year.

Let no one say the vinyl market is dominated by the dinosaurs of rock or their fans. Actually, scratch that – because it is. The Official Charts Company has released its lists of the best selling vinyl albums and singles this year, and both are dominated by Men of Rock of a certain age.

Chasing Yesterday by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds is the best selling vinyl album of the year, with Nos 2 and 3 being Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti and the Stone Roses’ debut album. The highest placed album by a woman, or an act including women, is Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, at No 18. The only other women or acts featuring women to feature in the top 40 are Courtney Barnett (Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit, No 23), Florence + the Machine (How Big How Blue How Beautiful, No 27), Fleetwood Mac (Rumours, No 29), Belle & Sebastian (Girls in Peacetime Want To Dance, No 36), Björk (Vulnicura, No 37) and Wolf Alice (My Love Is Cool, No 40).

The singles chart is even more skewed, with Gallagher and his Birds occupying the top three places, as well as No 7. David Bowie, meanwhile is at No 5 and No 6 , as well as No 10 (for a split single with Television’s Tom Verlaine released for Record Store Day). Florence + the Machine (What Kind of Man, No 14) and Courtney Barnett (Kim’s Caravan, No 17) are the only women in the top 20.

The top 10 vinyl albums of 2015 so far

1 Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Chasing Yesterday
2 Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti
3 The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses
4 Blur – The Magic Whip
5 Royal Blood – Royal Blood
6 Arctic Monkeys – AM
7 Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon
8 Led Zeppelin – IV
9 Sufjan Stevens – Carrie and Lowell
10 Public Service Broadcasting – The Race for Space

The top 10 vinyl singles of 2015 so far

On This Day In Oasis History...

"D'You Know What I Mean?" is a song by British rock band Oasis. It was the first single from their third album Be Here Now and was released on the 7th July 1997. It reached #1 in the UK singles chart, the 3rd Oasis song to do so. The song was written by Noel Gallagher. It was certified platinum for UK sales.

At the time "D'You Know What I Mean" was released, Oasis were at the height of their fame, and as a result, the single, along with the album, was highly anticipated. Upon its release it was critically and commercially successful.

The guitar chords on both the verse and the chorus are similar to the chords used for the Oasis single "Wonderwall" (F#m7/A/Esus4/Bsus4).

The song also shows more of Noel's influences. References include Bob Dylan ("Blood on the tracks and they must be mine"), and The Beatles ("Fool on the hill and I feel fine"), and even their own earlier work ("Don't look back in Anger "). The song also features a drum loop from N.W.A.

The Morse code in the background translates to include such sayings as "bugger all", "pork pies" and "Strawberry Fields Forever." Oasis haven't performed this song since 2002.

B-Sides

One of the B-sides, "Stay Young", has become a popular Oasis song, so much so that fans voted it onto the B-sides collection The Masterplan - one of only two B-sides from the Be Here Now period which made the album. The song was originally intended to be the "Digsy's Dinner" of Be Here Now (the lighthearted novelty track, such as "Digsy's Dinner" on Definitely Maybe and "She's Electric" on (What's the Story) Morning Glory?), until Noel set it aside in favour of "Magic Pie". Gallagher claims not to be particularly fond of the track.

Interview

In a 1997 interview promoting Be Here Now, Noel Gallagher had the following to say about the first single: "I was going to make up some profound statement in the chorus but I couldn't come up with anything that fitted. Then I just thought "All my people right here, right now. D'You Know What I Mean? Yeah, Yeah" Very vague, very ambiguous, that'll do. Look in the mirror and wink while you're singing it and it's quite saucy. And I f***ing love that line, 'Coming in a mess, going out in style'. We were a bunch of scruffs from Manchester and we're going out in a Rolls Royce."

In another 1997 interview, this time on BBC, Noel Gallagher said: "I cant believe I wrote it, it's going to blow people away."

"The morse code in the background was inspired by Strawberry Fields. We got hold of a code book and tried to tap out 'Bugger All' to follow that line 'Don't look back cos you know what you might see'. But if anyone can tell me what we really said, please let me know. Profound lagerisms..."

Seven Ages of Rock

In an interview with the BBC for their documentary Seven Ages of Rock, Gallagher said of the song, "Its eight and a half minutes, the first single, the drums haven't fuckin' come in for two minutes- its all feedback!". He also says that he expected someone to ask them to edit the introduction to the song down, but such was their status in Britain, nobody did. They even performed the song on Top of the Pops, still playing most of the lengthy introduction.

The performance on Top of the Pops ended with a stage invasion by surrounding fans- the second of three stage invasions in the whole history of the show (the first was Nirvana and the last Symposium).

Cover information

The single cover photograph, by Michael Spencer Jones and directed by Brian Cannon of Microdot, was taken in front of the 'Blind Steps', a staircase in Wigan so called because they run past the Blind Workshop, which can be seen to the left of the shot. The steps can still be found on Darlington Street. The shoot was shrouded in secrecy to protect mass media coverage, but newspaper The Wigan Evening Post got exclusive rights to cover the event and subsequently sold the photos to the Daily Mirror. At a lunchtime break, Liam Gallagher and sleeve designer Brian Cannon enjoyed a pint of beer in the nearby Crispin Arms pub by Birkett Bank.

Music video

The music video is filmed at Beckton Gas Works in London with many military helicopters and a strange landscape of concrete slabs and torn down buildings. Liam Gallagher is wearing a snorkel parka and sports a unique pair of sunglasses.
