Mat Whitecross Says Oasis' Achievements From 1993-96 Were Unprecedented

Mat Whitecross, the director of the forthcoming Oasis movie Supersonic has said the band's achievements from 1993-96 were unprecedented.

The band's first two records - 'Definitely Maybe' and (What's The Story) Morning Glory? - sold millions within a short period of time which culminated in their Knebworth double header which saw the band play to 250,000 people.

"We stopped at Knebworth because what is unique particularly with Oasis is from the moment they signed off the dole in 1993 to the moment they stepped out on stage at Knebworth, that was unheard of," Whitecross explained.

"You don't do that in two and a half years. The Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin did that after 15 years. Noel's theory is it can't happen again because the music business is so broken up and fractured now. For whatever reason there was this little flash moment where everyone's eyes were trained on them, the tabloids, they were hanging out with politicians. It was Blair, it was No 10. And then it was over but those two and a half years were gold."

Whitecross also said the band became too big after Knebworth and the magic they had in the first three years was lost.

“Those songs are like international anthems now," he added. "By becoming big you lose it and it's inevitable. In terms of them taking stock now there's been enough time for them to get to grips with what they really achieved back then. They were keen to talk about the legacy and were going 'We did something fucking amazing can we talk about that rather than the bust ups and the nonsense'."

Supersonic is out in UK cinemas on October 2.

Oasis' 'Supersonic Documentary Could Have Been Seven Hours Long

Mat Whitecross also says documentary will show fans what the Gallagher brothers are really like.

The director of new Oasis documentary Supersonic has said that the film could easily have been over seven hours long.

It is due for release on October 2 and documents the Manchester band's rise to fame from 1993-96.

"It [Supersonic] could have easily been over seven hours long," Whitecross explained. "We did 12 interviews with Noel and the same with Liam. We did about 20 hours with both of them. We'd talk to Noel and Liam and it was like we'd created a conversation between them even though they weren't in the same room.

"Noel was like 'I don't want it to be a bunch of grey haired middle aged rockers talking about how good things were in the old days'. But we kept it in the present by doing these audio interviews."

He also said despite the ongoing feud between the Gallagher brothers, they were both very honest about each other during the interviews.

“We did separate screenings for Noel and Liam," he explained. "But in the interviews with Liam I said 'Well obviously you started the band' and Liam would say 'Yeah but Noel would never admit to that' and I would go 'No that's what Noel told me last week' and he'd be like 'Really? Alright, OK'.

"I realised they were both trying to be as honest as possible about it. Noel was very open. It's pretty amazing some of the things he says about Liam. He said Liam was better looking than me and funnier than me and he wore better clothes than me but he wants my talent."

Whitecross also argued that film will present a true depiction of the Gallagher brothers.

He added: "For whatever reason because of all the tabloid bullshit and because of the caricature of them that was made through the years people have forgotten what they're really like and that was one of the things we really wanted to set the balance right and just go look they're smart, passionate fucking funny people who deserve to be right up front alongside The Rolling Stones, The Beatles all these people.

"The caricature that persists is that Noel is the cold, calculating talented one and Liam is the chaotic one but I think there's so much more to them than that. I think there's a lot introspection in Liam. He's incredibly perceptive about his own character and his weaknesses. He's got an amazing psychedelic mind and I think if you get in there some of the stuff he says is like poetry. You have to write everything down. It's fucking brilliant."

Oasis' Chasing The Sun: Oasis 1993-1997 Exhibition Is Heading To Manchester

Excited to announce the Chasing The Sun: Oasis 1993-1997 Exhibition will be heading to Manchester this autumn!

Running from 14th - 25th October, the Manchester exhibition will be held at Old Granada Studios, showcasing rare and iconic photos, artefacts and memorabilia from the early years of Oasis. The collection will be even more extensive than at the previous London and Tokyo shows!

The exhibition will be open daily from noon to 7pm, with the exception on Sundays when doors will close at 6pm.

Gem Archer And Zak Starkey Team Up For Charity Album

The drummers and bassists behind many classic bands' rhythm sections have reunited for a charity album.

Zak Starkey, who drummed with Oasis on their final two albums ‘Don’t Belive The Truth’ and ‘Dig Out Your Soul’, has formed the band Sshh with singer Sshh Liguz.

Their album ‘Issues’ sees the rhythm sections of many musicians play together to back the duo as they cover a host of classic songs.

These include Amy Winehouse’s bassist Dale Davis and drummer Nathan Allen play on a cover of ‘Back To Black’, while Starkey’s former Oasis bandmate Gem Archer plays guitar on a cover of The Small Faces’ 1966 song ‘Tin Soldier’, alongside their drummer Kenny Jones and The Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock.

The album's first single 'Problems' is a cover of The Sex Pistols featuring Matlock and Pistols drummer Paul Cook.

‘Issues’, out later this year, also features members of Primal Scream, Marilyn Manson, Blondie, The Pretenders, Mott The Hoople and The Ruts.

Starkey, who now plays with The Who, said he learnt more about playing drums from Jones than anyone else in his career – including his father, The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr.

Starkey told NME: “Of all the people who’ve taught me drums – Keith Moon, my dad, all of them – Kenney showed me the most. It was just great to play with him. Two Who drummers, past and present, playing at the same time: just one more unprecedented connection in the making of this album.”

Sshh made their live debut at London club The Box this week, watched on by Starr, Klaxons guitarist Jamie Reynolds, Ride guitarist Andy Bell, Adam And The Ants guitarist Marco Pirroni, The Lightning Seeds singer Ian Broudie and producer Youth.

On This Day In Oasis History...

The videos below are from the 7th of September 2008, when Explore Music caught up with Noel Gallagher in Toronto, Canada.

The interview was conducted before Noel was attacked on stage at the V Festival in Toronto.

Oasis were mid-way through their headline set at the festival and performing Morning Glory when Dan Sullivan knocked Gallagher to the ground.

Security guards wrestled the intruder to the floor and dragged him away, with brother Liam in pursuit.

The band dropped their instruments and left the stage but returned after a 15 minute break to resume their set, to cheers from the 25,000-strong audience.

Oasis Documentary Supersonic Almost Never Got Off The Ground

New interviews with the Gallaghers also reveal further details about the band's infamous Amsterdam ferry brawl.

The director of new Oasis documentary Supersonic has revealed that the film almost never got off the ground.

Mat Whitecross, said the turbulent relationship between Liam and Noel, became so chaotic at times, that it threatened to derail the project. He pointed to Liam's jibes on Twitter as the source of the conflict.

“Just before we were about to make the film and it looked like it was good, he tweeted that he was backstage at a Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds gig and I was like 'Fuck this is brilliant maybe we can get them both in together'," Whitecross explained. "Then about three days later there was another one of him calling Noel a potato or whatever it is he calls him and so it fell apart again and at that point it didn't look like the film was going to happen.”

Liam has been openly critical of Noel in recent times, calling his brother a "potato" on a regular basis. He also recently took to Twitter, to reveal that he had seen a trailer for Supersonic and Liam said he looked "might fine" in it but Noel didn't.

Whitecross added: “The only reason he does it is because he wants a reaction out of Noel. Noel's thing is like look I guarantee you we'll sit here and talk about us getting back together for decades and the day I go 'Do you know what? Fuck it alright let's get back together,' Liam will go 'No I'm alright'. He won't wanna do it.”

During a recent preview of the documentary, which is released nationwide on October 2, three clips were revealed including one of the band talking about their infamous brawl on a ferry to Amsterdam which resulted in their arrest and deportation back to the UK on what would have been their first gig overseas in 1994.

“The drink of choice for a few hours was Champagne and Jack Daniels (during the trip),” revealed roadie Jason Rhodes.

“The next thing sporadic fighting is breaking out all round us and Liam got very excited by the prospect of a lot of chaos going on and he goes and joins in. You can see him running through the windows along the deck. He's having a great time. It looks like he's in a school playground chasing leaves. The next time I see Liam he's still running up. He's got policemen running after him.”

“As the fight broke out all I remember was it was a bit Benny Hill,” laughed Liam. “It was fucking mayhem man, I loved it. It was punk rock man.”

Bonehead reflected: “Someone has punched someone, someone has kicked someone, someone has got nicked and we were handcuffed and sent down to the bottom of the boat and locked up. It was a hell of a start that wasn't it? That was a great first day at work.”

Noel added: “I called (Alan) McGee and I'll never forget this and this is another reason why I love McGee, I said: 'Are you sitting down? I've got some news, everybody has been arrested'. The only word he said was (adopts Scottish accent) 'brilliant'.”

The bust up became the source of Liam and Noel's infamous 'Wibbling Rivarly' bootleg single, which currently holds the highest UK charting record for an interview, reaching number 52 on 25 November 1995.

Noel Gallagher On Liam, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Donald Trump And More

Robert De Niro still doesn’t know who Noel Gallagher is – even after they shared an eight hour lunch date.

The Hollywood legend, 73, and ex-Oasis man enjoyed a bottle of wine – or three – together in the south of France.

But despite being a big music fan, Bob did not make Manchester’s finest an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Noel, 49, revealed: “I sat next to him and I’ve got to say he didn’t have a clue who I was.

“We had this lunch that started at one o’clock in the afternoon... and he left at about eight or nine. He was there for about eight hours.”

Even after their marathon meal break, the Taxi Driver star seemed a little miffed why Noel was famous.

The rocker explained: “As he was leaving, he said, ‘Write down the name of that band again that you were in.’

“If I ever have the pleasure of meeting him again, he’ll just go, ‘I’ve never met this guy’.”

Sounds like the well-oiled Supersonic star was not in a much better state himself.

Noel said: “We’re all huge fans of him and his films and I was bombarding him – stuff like how did you make Raging Bull, how did that come to be in the film and where do you get the inspiration for your parts?

“All that kind of thing – I have no idea what he said!” Even so, fanboy Noel loved his De Niro experience.

Noel, who performed with his band High Flying Birds at Brixton Academy last night, added: “He did the De Niro face when he was slagging off Donald Trump.

“I nearly had a tear in my eye when he was doing it. “The day after I was saying to (my wife) Sara, ‘I think the only thing that could top that would be going on a bender with Jack Nicholson, that’s it really.”

The guitarist recently joined Instagram to share his picture with De Niro.

Now he is considering venturing deeper into the world of social media and getting a Twitter account, as he thinks it would give him an outlet to have a global rant.

It would also offer him a platform to respond to his brother Liam Gallagher’s cheeky tweets, which refer to him as a potato.

Noel said: “Liam sits at home in a rocking chair Googling my name thinking of witty tweets.”

Video: Noel Gallagher Joined By Paul Weller And Johnny Marr In London

Noel Gallagher was joined by Johnny Marr and Paul Weller on stage at Brixton O2 Academy last night (September 6).

Marr joined the show seven songs in to play guitar on Oasis’ 1995 classic ‘Champagne Supernova’ before the pair performed ‘Ballad Of The Mighty I’, the track Marr guests on for the second Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds album ‘Chasing Yesterday’.

Weller, introduced as “my neighbour” by Gallagher, came on during the encore to play two songs by his old band The Jam, ‘Pretty Green’ and ‘Town Called Malice’.

The show marked the end of the tour for ‘Chasing Yesterday’ and was the first time Gallagher had ever played at the celebrated London venue during his 22-year career.

On This Day In Oasis History...

Definitely Maybe was released on DVD on September 6th 2004 to mark the tenth anniversary of its original release. It went triple platinum in the UK.

The DVD featured an hour-long documentary about the recording of the album featuring rare and contemporary interviews with the band and its associates.

Also included was the album in its entirety, which included "Sad Song", which was originally only released on the UK vinyl version of the album and also on the Japanese CD edition. Other content included live and TV performances of the albums twelve tracks, and the promo videos to "Supersonic" (UK & US versions), "Shakermaker", "Live Forever" (UK & US versions), "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and "Rock 'n' Roll Star".

A limited-edition release in the UK and Ireland included a bonus DVD containing more live footage and anecdotes.

























There was also an accompanying made-for-TV documentary, entitled There We Were, Now Here We Are...: The Making Of Oasis. This was broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK at 11:30pm on Friday, 3 September , three days before the release of the Definitely Maybe DVD. The programme combined existing and unused interview footage from the DVD documentary and focused on the origins of the band, and the four singles from Definitely Maybe.

It also included a very rare clip of "All Around the World" performed live at a rehearsal session in the Boardwalk in 1992, five years before it was eventually recorded and released on Be Here Now. The DVD received the NME award for Best Music DVD.

Oasis Documentary Director Mat Whitehouse Is Convinced Oasis Will Get Back Together

The director of new Oasis documentary Supersonic has admitted he is convinced the band will get back together one day.

Speaking at a special preview screening at Festival No 6 on Sunday night (September 4), Matt Whitecross said: "Neither of them have discounted the idea of getting back together. It will happen, I'm sure. The idea of never seeing them again for me is impossible."

He continued: "Noel said everyone is always coming up to them giving them advice about how they are going to mend this relationship. He's friends with Chris Martin and he said Chris should quit the music business and become a therapist because every week he goes 'Look this is how you are going to patch up the band'. Noel said look no one knows like we know each other and it will happen when it happens but we can't force it. Liam was like 'He's full of shit' and Noel's like 'He's full of shit'."

Whitecross added: "Noel said unless it was an obscene amount of money what would be the point in any of them getting back together. Liam is like 'No fuck it we were great.' So I think they've still got it. They should go out and give it a go. I feel people out there want it so I hope they get it.

Supersonic documents the band's rise to fame over a period of three years up to their career pinnacle at Knebworth and features hours of footage of new interviews with Noel and Liam Gallager, their mother and members of the band and road crew.

Three clips from the film were previewed for the first time ever at the session last night. One clip featured footage of Liam and Noel arm wrestling on the floor before an early Top Of The Pops appearance.

Recent audio footage also plays over the scene with Noel opening up about their relationship.

"(Our relationship) is about a power struggle that's what it is," Noel reveals. "It's about me being in charge and everybody directing everything towards me and Liam being pissed off about it. That's basically what starts it all."

Liam adds: "I think it all boils down to the fact that when he bought a stereo years ago and we shared a room, I think one night I'd come in pissed and I couldn't find the light switch so I pissed all over his new stereo. I think it basically boils down to that. He's held that grudge ever since. Let go over them bridges brother."

Another clip also documents their first experience in Japan and how they experienced Beatle-mania.

"We arrived in Japan and there were like a thousand girls at the airport," Noel explains. "I was like fucking hell. They followed us everywhere, outside hotels, in the fucking foyer, outside your room, in your fucking room, everywhere you went. It was like mania. It was like what we'd always read about."

Liam then says: "Guigs (former bassist Paul McGuigan) wasn't too fussed on it. He was like 'What's the fuss about?' and I said 'Me you fucking lunatic that's what the fuss is about.'"

Supersonic is out in UK cinemas on October 2.
