On This Day In Oasis History...

"All Around The World" is a song by British rock band Oasis. Released on the 12th of January 1998, the track peaked at Number 1 in the UK Singles Chart; it is the longest single ever to do so. It went Silver in the UK.

"All Around the World", nearly ten minutes long, is embellished with string and horn pieces, and is followed by a two-minute-long instrumental, "All Around the World (Reprise)". Upon its release the reviews were generally positive. It is in keeping with many Oasis songs, such as "Whatever", "Acquiesce", "Live Forever" in that it preaches the belief that "it's gonna be okay". It also features a backing vocal in the coda remarkably similar to the corresponding section in The Beatles' song "Hey Jude".

History

The song was one of the first to be written by Noel, and there are recorded sessions of the band rehearsing it at the Boardwalk club as early as 1992. However, despite Noel's fondness for the song, it did not appear on their first two albums, Definitely Maybe and (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, as he wanted to wait until the band could afford to produce the song in the extravagant manner in which it was to eventually appear. From time to time, Gallagher has claimed that this is one of the best songs he has ever written.

As early as Spring 1994, the final production sound for this song was envisaged. On the interview Wibbling Rivalry, Noel Gallagher said of the song, "With Supersonic, I worried I was never going to write another song after that 'cos I thought, 'It sounds that good'... Two days later I superseded it by about 50 fuckin' times. The reason we haven't recorded that song is because there isn't enough money in Creation Records' bank balance to pay for the production of that record. When we do that record..." Noel also added when asked if there would be an orchestra on it, "Orchestras, man? It's not got to be one, it's got to be two".

Video

Keeping with the feel of the song, the video was also a lavish affair. Featuring the band in a yellow spaceship, the animated piece saw them travel through a world akin to The Beatles' Yellow Submarine film. The video was directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and apparently took 24 computer animators 6 months to make. The video itself is not as long as the song, lasting just over seven minutes. The part of the song that was cut out is mostly towards the end.

Description

Noel described the song shortly before the release of the album- "I wrote this one ages ago, before Whatever. It was twelve minutes long then. It was a matter of being able to afford to record it. But now we can get away with the 36-piece orchestra. And the longer the better as far as I'm concerned. If it's good. I can see what people are going to say, but fuck 'em, basically."

"The lyrics are teeny-poppy. But there are three key changes towards the end. Imagine how much better Hey Jude would have been with three key changes towards the end. I like the ambition of it, all that time ago. What was all that about when we didn't even have our first single out? Gin and tonics, eh?"

B-Sides

The B-Sides of "All Around the World" were two Noel sung songs, The Fame and Flashbax. Oasis also recorded a cover version of a Rolling Stones song, "Street Fighting Man".

Trivia

When it was suggested that Oasis take legal action against pop band Hear'Say for their first single's ("Pure and Simple") uncanny similarity to "All Around the World", Noel simply laughed at the hypocrisy of such an act from a man who was famous for "borrowing" from other artists.

The harmonica pieces on the track were performed by Mark Feltham. Noel and Liam's then wives, Meg Mathews and Patsy Kensit and The Verve's front man Richard Ashcroft sang backing vocals.

Portions of the song's chorus were used as background music for AT&T's advertising campaign for "The New" AT&T.

The photograph on the front of the single was taken on Bournemouth beach in Dorset, England.

Liam Gallagher Hits Back At Twitter Troll Mocking George Michael

Liam Gallagher has hit back at a Twitter user who made a joke at the expense of the late George Michael.

Gallagher initially tweeted his disbelief at the news of Michael’s death, which was announced by his publicist on Christmas Day, who said that the ‘Faith’ singer had “passed away peacefully at home.”

“It better not be true about George Michael,” Gallagher wrote on the social platform, where he has 1.4 million followers. In a since-deleted reply to that tweet, a Twitter user by the name of @Migualez then made a joke that referred to Michael’s 1998 arrest in a public restroom in Beverley Hills, California.

Incensed by the response, Gallagher directly replied to the Twitter user, writing: “Your a massive cunt good job your a nobody as if be coming down your chimney and volleying you in the face.”

Gallagher paid tribute to the late singer yesterday (December 26) on Twitter by posting a link to Michael’s 1990 single ‘Praying For Time’.

"Whatever" is a single by British rock band Oasis, written by the band's lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It was released on December 18th 1994 as a stand-alone single bridging the gap between Oasis' debut album, Definitely Maybe, and their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. "Whatever" entered the UK Singles Chart at #3, their first single to enter the top 5. The strings were played by the London Session Orchestra, arranged by Nick Ingham and Noel Gallagher.

The song joins the infectious pop-rock melodies of Definitely Maybe with the more sophisticated lyrics of (What's the Story) Morning Glory, preaching universal tolerance and the acceptance of all ideas and beliefs in a typically straightforward, Mancunian way. The first lines ("I'm free to be whatever I/Whatever I choose/And I'll sing the blues if I want") may have been Noel's reaction to his father's insistence that he join the building trade.

"Whatever" was released as a contender for the coveted position of Christmas #1, 1994
It is a testament to Noel Gallagher's all-conquering self confidence that he should predict "Whatever"'s success before he was even given a record contract, saying "In the beginning, there was a masterplan, to the extent that I knew that 'Whatever,' one of the first songs I ever wrote, would be a Christmas Top Five hit, but I think anyone who heard the song could have told you that."

When Oasis performed the song for Top of the Pops, they mimed and one of the cello players from the symphony was replaced by Bonehead, who clearly had no idea how his instrument is supposed to be played. Towards the end of the song, he gave up the pretense and started using the bow to conduct. A woman plays his rhythm guitar. The song was introduced by Damon Albarn of Blur who would later famously feud with Oasis. As Albarn introduced the song, the Gallagher brothers made hand gestures behind him, which only served to heighten the feud between the bands.

"Whatever" has been performed live by Oasis many times, sometimes with the ambitious symphony which accompanies the single version, sometimes without. They often end live versions of the song with lyrics adapted from the Beatles song "Octopus's Garden." They have also been known to add the lines "All the young blues....carry the news...", in reference to the Mott the Hoople song "All The Young Dudes". The "blues" are the fans of the Gallaghers' beloved Manchester City F.C.. At their famous performances at Knebworth in August 1996, the song was accompanied throughout by harmonica player Mark Feltham and is generally regarded by fans as one of the highlights of their set.

The B-Sides of "Whatever" were quite famous as well. One of them, "Slide Away" was already featured on their debut album, Definitely Maybe. The other two - "(It's Good) To Be Free" and "Half the World Away" - were later featured on The Masterplan, a collection of Oasis's best b-sides. "Slide Away" and "Half the World Away" would also be featured on Oasis' 2006 "best of" album Stop the Clocks, although "Whatever" itself was not included.

'Whatever' spent a total of 50 weeks in the UK Singles chart, more than any Oasis single to date.
