"Songbird" is a song by British rock band Oasis, from their fifth studio album Heathen Chemistry. It was released as the fourth single from that album on 3 February 2003 and peaked at #3 in the UK charts. Being written by lead singer Liam Gallagher, it was the first time the band had released a single not written by his brother Noel.

Upon joining Oasis in the early nineties, Noel Gallagher claimed sole-songwriting responsibilities, and allowing little-to-no leeway from the rest of the band. He openly mocked the songwriting output of Liam and Bonehead, who had been in charge of Oasis' songwriting prior to his joining and had written a handful of tracks such as "Take Me" and an acoustic number titled "Life In Vain". Liam elaborated on the situation in 1994, after the release of Definitely Maybe saying "Noel won't let me (write), but I can't really write anyway... In the future if I started writing top tunes, I still don't think he'd be up for it... I know for a fact, even if he was going dry, he wouldn't play my songs... I'm not happy with that, but that's the way it is innit?".

However, after Oasis' third album Be Here Now received a cold reception from music critics, Noel began to loosen his control and allowed Liam to contribute songs. Though his first effort, "Little James" which appeared on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, was criticised for being too simple and childlike (in particular, rhyming "plasticine" with "trampoline"), Songbird was fairly well received, despite only being based around two simple chords (G + Em7).

The song, written for Liam's girlfriend Nicole Appleton, was seen as a surprising break away from Liam's "Hard-Man" image. He explained this away saying "I like beautiful things...It's not all dark in Liam World. I take me shades off every now and again and have a look at the world and see some nice things."

The simplistic video was filmed in Regent's Park in London, and featured Liam playing an acoustic guitar under a tree, and also being chased by a dog.

Songbird is the shortest running Oasis single, at 2:07.

The song is included on Oasis' 2006 'best-of' album Stop The Clocks.

Liam Gallagher's Rooftop Gig To Be Broadcast On Radio X On February 18th

Liam Gallagher is to play an intimate rooftop gig for Radio X listeners in London’s Leicester Square on February 12th.

He’ll perform an exclusive acoustic set for just 90 people at Global, on the company’s rooftop terrace.

Liam’s debut solo album ‘As You Were’ was one of the biggest selling records of 2017, debuting at number one when it was released in October. As the frontman and lead singer of Oasis, he sold a combined total of 77 million copies across seven multiplatinum studio albums, making them one of the highest selling bands of all time. His UK arena tour in December sold out in minutes and he’s set to play massive sold-out shows at London’s Finsbury Park and Manchester’s Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground this summer.

Matt Deverson, Managing Editor of Radio X, said: “Liam Gallagher is one of the greatest artists of his generation. His UK arena tour and huge summer shows sold out in minutes, so to have him perform an acoustic rooftop gig especially for Radio X is very special. Radio X Presents… gives our listeners the chance to see some of the world’s biggest artists play in intimate settings and we can’t wait for what is sure to be an incredible evening.”

On Sunday February 18th, Radio X will celebrate the life and music of Liam Gallagher. Listeners will be able to hear the intimate gig in full, plus Liam’s exclusive interview with Danny Wallace and a career retrospective with John Kennedy.

Johnny Marr On Working With Noel Gallagher And More

Taken from an interview with Johnny Marr read the full article here.

You played on Noel Gallagher’s latest album. Did he return the favour?

“Not yet, because he’s always playing. He’s always on the road. That’s the second time I’ve played on one of his solo records now, so hopefully we’ll get around to working on my stuff. He’s always off in exotic places every time I hear from him – like some enormodome in South America.

“I liked his record. I played on a couple, but the song that ended up on the record is actually my favourite on the album. I was pleased about that, ‘Love Is The Law’. I’ve never heard a rock song like it. It hangs together like nothing else. It’s like a fucking movie.”

When you were in the studio, did you feel like he was pushing himself into a more adventurous place?

“Yeah, before we went into the studio I knew that anyway. We see each other on and off, and I know that he knew he was onto something. He and David [Holmes, producer] were working at every opportunity.

“I knew it was good because he told me it was good. Nothing with David is out of bounds, as long as it feels good and sounds good. They’re a good team because Noel can get a good melody over anything. What he’s proven with his solo stuff is that he’s still writing with the spirit that people love him for, but you can’t really imagine Oasis doing.”

He’s been very vocal about living outside of his legacy. You must understand that as well?

“Yeah. I’ve played a couple of shows with him now and the new stuff really stands up. The audience love it and it makes people feel really good. That’s something that he’s better at than anyone else.”
