As he takes the stage at this, the fifth gig of his first, post-Oasis tour, Noel Gallagher's solo debut album has been available for just 14 days. Enough time, it seems, for tonight's sold-out crowd to learn every word of his new songs. It's perhaps just as well, as nine of this evening's 20 tracks are culled from Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Having eased open the door to this new, live chapter with a spooky (It's Good) To Be Free and a pugilistic Mucky Fingers, album opener Everybody's On The Run begins a run of six new songs, each a muscular, jet-propelled version of their LP counterpart.

Aided in no small part by the freshness of his new band (and the deafening crack of Jeremy Stacey's snare drum), the likes of (I Wanna Live In A Dream In My) Record Machine and pop mini-epic If I Had A Gun..., are examples of Noel's deft ability to meld the melodic and the explosive, while the melancholic The Death Of You And Me is fast becoming one of the finest songs he's ever written. New, new track Freaky Teeth is the low-slung cousin of final Oasis single Falling Down and acts as the precursor to a two-song, acoustic nod to his old band. Wonderwall - played by Noel in the Ryan Adams-cover style for the last decade - ignites every voice in the venue and is quickly followed by a bare-boned Supersonic. One of only three Liam-sung Oasis songs played tonight, its opening call-to-arms (I need to be myself/I can't be no one else) sounds tinged with melancholy. It's the only moment when the spectre of Liam Gallagher (and that voice) looms large.

If he had any worries about occupying the centre spot on stage, then Noel is hiding them well. His voice is in fine shape and an extended period of rehearsals has ensured that, even at this early stage, his band appear on top touring form. In any other circumstances Zutons bassist Russell Pritchard and guitarist Tim Smith would be considered reserved players, but with the immovable Gallagher at the helm, their moments of bouncing and grooving seem almost frantic. It certainly makes a change from the phalanx of static figures we've seen playing Oasis songs over the last 17 years. A triple-headed encore of Don't Look Back In Anger, The Importance Of Being Idle and Little By Little turn an already sweltering crowd into a swaying, singing mass that momentarily causes the Forum to expand to the size of a stadium. This is what Noel Gallagher is really, really good at.

Speaking to MOJO earlier this year, Noel Gallagher said: "In the early days, the only way you could have a connection with Oasis was to come and see us." 20 years later, with his younger brother having cast the music of his old band adrift, it has fallen to Gallagher Sr. to prove this Oasis connection is still possible. But this time round, with an arsenal of revitalised new songs, you get much, much more.

The high priest of rock and roll stepped out with nothing to prove...and a whole lot to offer as a solo artist.

It was an immaculate set of Oasis classics and tunes from the Birds’ self-titled new album, delivered with affection and expert composure.

Opening with Oasis’s much-loved B-side To Be Free, punters knew they were in for a feast.

Haunting solo ballad If I Had A Gun already caused terrace-style chanting that Noel has become accustomed to over the years.

He ditched the band for an eerie Wonderwall that mashed its old swagger with a newfound calm, before the lads came back for something fresh – dancey and energetic current single AKA What A Life.

Don’t Look Back In Anger was a fitting sublime finale.

Noel’s said his band name – an ever-changing cast of gifted mates – is basically a joke.

But those Birds are certainly soaring.

The former Oasis guitarist gave the fourth concert of his debut tour as Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds at the Hammersmith Apollo and said he was blown away by the rapturous reception he received from the sell-out crowd.

Before playing his final song, 2002 Oasis single 'Little by Little', he said: "This has been an absolute privilege to play for you people tonight.

Jokingly referring to people from Liverpool and the re-setting of the clocks for British winter time, he added: "This has very different connotations for Scousers but make sure you put your watches back tonight and your clocks."

In his set, Noel played a selection of Oasis songs and several tracks from his solo album, including 'Dream On', '(I Wanna Live in a Dream in My) Record Machine', 'AKA... What a Life!' and 'The Death of You and Me', all of which were well received by fans.

In an apparent reference to his decision to quit his former band after a huge bust-up with his brother Liam in August 2009, the songwriter opened his set with Oasis B-side '(It's Good) To Be Free' - which had an arrangement borrowed by his previous solo acoustic shows for The Teenage Cancer Trust.

The 44-year-old musician also treated the audience to a stripped down version of 'Wonderwall' - on which he was accompanied by just a piano and tambourine - and a surprise acoustic version of 'Supersonic', which was Oasis' first single, and famous for Liam's snarling vocals.

Other highlights included two more Oasis B-sides, 'Half the World Away' and 'Talk Tonight' - which Noel dedicated "to the girls at the back there" - solo tracks 'If I Had a Gun.' and 'Everybody's on the Run' and encore songs 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and 'The Importance of Being Idle'.

Noel is performing at London's Roundhouse venue tonight (31.10.11) and recently announced an arena tour of the UK and Ireland which kicks off in his hometown of Manchester on February 13 2012.

Noel Gallagher On The High Flying Birds, Liam, Oasis And More

He’s on the rooftop deck of the Mondrian Hotel in SoHo, Noel Gallagher and a hundred of his favourite strangers, goggling at the staggering 270-degree view of – everything, really: skyscrapers, bridges, Manhattan’s eyrie.

It’s an Oasis album cover, a view worthy of High Flying Birds – and as his debut solo album blasts on the sound system, and Gallagher sips wine with media and fans pressing in with their umpteenth questions, even the rock star is a little overwhelmed.

“I’d never done anything like that before, ever,” he says the next day in a different swish downtown hotel. “My wife [Sara MacDonald] was going, ‘I don’t know how you do it.’ But in the end, I think the best way is just to get drunk.”

And did you?

“Oh, yeah.”

Well, there’s a legacy to uphold – without the usual suspects. At 44, he’s relaxed and self-deprecating, laughing and peppering his speech with cheerily sardonic F-bombs the way people salt French fries, and why not? Having powered Britpop sensation Oasis to 70 million in worldwide sales in the guitar nineties, he’s launching Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds solo, with the North American leg of the tour opening Nov. 7 at Massey Hall in Toronto.

But, sometimes, being your brother’s keeper is the devil you know. The guitarist and songwriter left Oasis in 2009, after a final rumble with younger brother Liam.

“Initially, it wasn’t a relief. It was a pain in the ass. But now I’m in it, I thought ‘Why not? I don’t have to worry about band politics.’ ”

That’s one way to put it: politics. In the Middle Eastern sense. Only the Kinks’ Davies waged brotherhood like Oasis’s Gallaghers did, brawling their way through a decade and a half of hits and punches. But Noel plays down his role in the mythology.

“You know, I never started a fight with a single person on this planet,” he says. “The only person I ever argued with about anything was Liam. And we don’t need to go into why. I’m not an aggressive person. I argue with my wife.”

The album came after a year off to reassess and recharge. But songwriting is what he does in his spare time. “And I’m really lucky that people are interested in what I do in my spare time.”

With the interest come expectations. “Everybody expects you to come back with the direct … anthem. And I was like, I wanna come back with a whisper. I wanna tap people on the shoulder and say, ‘Come over here a minute, there’s … trumpets on this!’ ”

Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, HMV Forum

After the all-seated nostalgia of his solo debut in the Albert Hall last year, Noel Gallagher proved surprisingly essential viewing at the weekend. This wasn't a sombre post-Oasis wake but a second coming, powered by an elated crowd having Titanic moments on the balconies and singing every word.

A perfectly pleasant debut solo album caught fire in concert. The lyrics of songs just two weeks old, largely nonsensical in the Oasis tradition though they may mostly be, had already been memorised for optimum bellowing. If anything Noel's High Flying Birds were even less watchable than Oasis, who among their static number at least had one absolutely furious man who was inevitably wearing something ridiculous. But unlike Liam Gallagher's current Beady Eye project, who stubbornly and suicidally refuse to play songs that they haven't written, Noel still has Oasis classics in his arsenal. He's the divorced parent who dispenses the most ice cream, starting with the telling lyrics of old B-side (It's Good) to be Free and building up to yet another arms-aloft singalong of Don't Look Back in Anger.

He even did Wonderwall, admittedly as the Ryan Adams version, though with so many people howling the original melody it was hard to notice the subtle distinction.

New B-side The Good Rebel carried on a long tradition of resembling Beatles tunes (Ticket to Ride this time) but there was fresh energy in the pounding piano of AKA … What a Life! and the drum assault of Dream On. The acoustic Talk Tonight became a full band number; the traditionally Liam-sung Supersonic was stripped down to its bones.

While no one can sing like Liam, everyone reckons they can do Noel's bits and they duly did, creating an electric atmosphere for a new start that's going places.

Noel Gallagher Says That Mario Balotelli Is A "Total Rock'n'Roller"

Noel Gallagher has explained that people love Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli as he lives life on the edge.

Speaking to the Guardian, the former Oasis guitarist stated that the Italian attacker is a "total rock'n'roller".

Gallagher added that some of the stunts Balotelli has become famous for have caught the eye of the general public due to the fact they have always wondered what it would be like to act in that way.

Balotelli has been featured in the news for setting off fireworks from a window of his home, handing out money to homeless people in Manchester city centre and high-fiving fans from his car.

But his form on the pitch finally seems to be living up to his antics off the field, with him scoring twice in the recent thrashing City doled out to Manchester United earlier in the month.

He now has six goals this season and has helped City to the top of the Premier League.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Wonderwall" is a song by English rock band Oasis, written by the band's guitarist and chief songwriter Noel Gallagher. Released as the third single from (What's the Story) Morning Glory? in October 1995, "Wonderwall" peaked at number two in the UK Singles Charts and proved to be their American breakthrough, reaching number eight on the Hot 100 and giving them their only top-ten hit in the US thus far. "Wonderwall" is perhaps their most popular song, despite the fact that British TV stars Robson & Jerome's "I Believe"/"Up on the Roof" kept it out of the top slot. "Wonderwall" continues to have enduring popularity in Oasis's canon; as of 2008, it was 76th in the UK's list of best-selling singles, and has now sold over a million copies in single and download sales in the UK, where it went platinum.

The song is included on Oasis's compilation album Stop the Clocks.

Background

The song takes its name from the 1968 album Wonderwall Music by George Harrison, at the time still a member of the Beatles.[3] Harrison's album was in fact a soundtrack to the film Wonderwall, but the film has remained unknown by the general public. The original title of the track was "Wishing Stone".

It is often claimed that "Wonderwall" was written for Gallagher's then-girlfriend, Meg Mathews. Noel married Mathews in 1997, but the couple divorced four years later. Gallagher now claims that the song was not about Mathews at all, but he felt he had to go along with the rumour, saying "The meaning of that song was taken away from me by the media who jumped on it. How do you tell your Mrs it's not about her once she's read it is? It's a song about an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself."

Recording

The song was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales, during a two-week recording of the 'Morning Glory' album in May 1995. According to producer Owen Morris, the song was completed in 6-8 hours.

Morris claimed that Gallagher had presented an alternative arrangement of the song "which had some extra complicated pre-bridge bits that didn't have singing or melody - but just had some chord changes - which seemed completely unnecessary", the night before it was recorded. This idea was quickly shelved.

Noel initially wanted to sing this song on (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, but he gave his brother Liam Gallagher the choice, and Noel ended up singing "Don't Look Back in Anger".



















Live performances

Noel debuted the song on UK TV, backstage at Glastonbury and broadcast on Channel 4 on June 24, 1995. The song wasn't performed by the band during their headline performance the night before.

In August 2002, Noel changed the arrangement of his live performances of the song to a style admittedly heavily-influenced by Ryan Adams' cover version of the song. This arrangement has continued to his most recent live performances of the song. When the full band performs the song live, with electric guitars, it's still in the original style as presented on the record. During the 2008 tour, however the band have return to performing the song in a semi acoustic form.

A live version of the song, recorded at Wembley Stadium in 2000, is featured on the band's live album Familiar To Millions.

In an interview with Q magazine in August 2008, Liam said that he hates performing the song: "I can't stand that fucking song, every time I have to sing it, I want to gag. Problem is 'Wonderwall' was a big big tune for us and so you go to America and they're like, 'Are you Mr Wonderwall?', and you want to chin someone."





Video

The music video to the song was filmed in the relatively brief period when bassist Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan quit the band due to nervous exhaustion; Scott McLeod came in to replace him.



Cover art

The sleeve artwork was inspired by the paintings of the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, and was shot on Primrose Hill in north London. The hand holding the frame is that of art director Brian Cannon; the woman is Anita Heryet, a Creation Records employee. The original idea was to have Liam in the frame before Noel vetoed that idea whilst the shoot was taking place.

Chart history

It reached No.2 in the UK charts.

In the US it also peaked at #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart for an unprecedented ten weeks (this amount was later eclipsed in 1998 by Marcy Playground), and reached #8 on the Hot 100.

Awards and accolades

In 1995, "Wonderwall" came in at number one in the national Australian music poll, the Triple J Hottest 100.

The promo video for "Wonderwall", directed by Nigel Dick, won the Best British Video award at the 1996 BRIT Awards.

In the Grammy Awards of 1997 the band received a nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and Noel Gallagher picked another nomination for Best Rock Song, winning none.

In 2003, VH1 ranked the song at number 95 in its countdown of the "100 Greatest Songs Of The Past 25 Years."

In May 2005, "Wonderwall" was voted the best British song of all time, in a poll of over 8,500 listeners conducted by Virgin Radio.

The song "Wonderwall" placed 105 of the 3000 top songs of all time on the website acclaimedmusic.net.

In August 2006, "Wonderwall" was named the second-greatest song of all time in a poll conducted by Q Magazine, finishing behind another Oasis song, "Live Forever".

In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Wonderwall" at number 27 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.

In December 2007, it came in number 35 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90's countdown.

In early 2007, "Wonderwall"'s drumming, provided by Alan White, was voted 90th best drumming track ever in Modern Drummer magazine.

Noel Gallagher To Have A Cameo In The Christmas Bo Selecta?

Noel Gallagher is fast becoming one of my favourite people. Mainly because he says everything we are all thinking!

The ex-Oasis rocker – now fronting his solo project High Flying Birds – was on a roll at the Q Awards with a rant about modern mobile phones.

He said: “I just want a basic 1994 Nokia mobile. I can keep it in my back pocket and just do the basics with it – phone and text. What would I need a camera on it for? iPhones are for Cockneys and ****s. And they are far too big.”

And on collaborating with other artists, Noel, 44, revealed: “I’ve never been asked to do a collaboration. I guess I just don’t give off that come-and-get-me vibe. I wouldn’t be adverse to doing one with Coldplay or U2 – anyone who sells 50million albums.”

I also overheard him boasting he’s accepted a cameo in a Bo’ Selecta! Christmas special.

Proper, erm, bo.

Noel Gallagher's Homecoming Gig 'Snubbed By Manchester United Players'

Trio of Reds didn't turn up to O2 Apollo after 6-1 thumping by Manchester City

Noel Gallagher has revealed three Manchester United players snubbed guestlist places at his homecoming earlier this week following their humiliating defeat to the singer's beloved Manchester City last weekend (October 23).

The High Flying Birds man played at the O2 Apollo Manchester on Wednesday (26) as part of his debut UK and Ireland tour.

A trio of unnamed Red Devils players had requested tickets to the show, but mysteriously didn't show up following their 6-1 battering by the Blues on Sunday.

The former Oasis leader told The Sun that the United players had been "bang up for it" before the fixture.

He added: "One of them mysteriously developed 'food poisoning,' another one had 'forgot it was half-term' – whatever that means. Then just to add insult to injury the last, and probably most famous of all the dirty Reds, sez, 'Something's come up and I have to deal with it."

Gallagher concluded: "Something's come up? What? Like a bit of sick that's been in there since Sunday."

The tour is due to continue at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo in London tonight (29), with two more gigs in the capital following tomorrow (HMV Forum) and Monday (The Roundhouse).

Gallagher has also announced a UK and Ireland arena tour for next year, which is due to kick off at the Manchester MEN Arena on Feburary 13 before visiting Belfast, Dublin, Newcastle, Glasgow, London and Birmingham.

Tickets went onsale yesterday (28).

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds Is The Second Biggest Selling Album In The World

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds is the second best-selling album in the world last week according to global sales figures and national album charts.

Noel Gallagher sold 170.000 copies and was the highest new entry on the chart, beaten by Adele's 21 album that spent it's 27th week at number one.

Another On This Day In Oasis History...

On October 29th 2002, Noel Gallagher played an acoustic set set at the Fairplay charity gig at London's Astoria to raise money for the Make Trade Fair campaign.

NOEL GALLAGHER and CHRIS MARTIN teamed up to perform a cover of Smiths' 'STOP ME IF YOU THINK YOU'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE', as part of an amazing night of collaborations at the LONDON ASTORIA.

As previously reported, 'Fair Play' (October 29) was organised by Emily Eavis, the daughter of Glastonbury founder Michael. The show was intended to raise cash and awareness for Oxfam, helping to raise the profile of their Make Trade Fair campaign.

The bill featured Lamb, Idlewild, Noel Gallagher and Coldplay, who were billed as featuring 'special guests'.

After a solo set from Gallagher, which featured the likes of 'Wonderwall', 'Slide Away' and 'Married With Children', Coldplay took to the stage, and performed a handful of their own songs.

They were then joined by Ms Dynamite for a cover of [/a]'s 'Three Little Birds', and her own songs 'It Takes More' and 'Dy-Na-Mi-Tee'.

She was then replaced by Noel, who performed a duet of Coldplay's hit single 'Yellow', and Oasis' 'Live Forever'. During the duets, Martin appeared overcome, telling the audience that it was one of the best moments of his life. Their set also included a cover of [a]' 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before', a song that originally featured on the legendary Manchester group's 1987 album, 'Strangeways, Here We Come'.

On This Day In Oasis History...

Lord Don't Slow Me Down is a rockumentary film, looking back on British band Oasis' Don't Believe the Truth world tour which took place from May 2005 to March 2006. The film is directed by Baillie Walsh. It went platinum in the UK. The DVD was released on October 29th 2007.







Pre-release

A handful of fans-only private screenings took place around the world with the world premiere of the film at the Directors Guild Theater in New York City on November 4, 2006 as part of the CMJ Film Festival. The UK television premiere was on Channel 4 on November 19, at 11:50pm, although it was a heavily edited version with approximately 40 minutes cut from the original 95 minute version. The film was unveiled to coincide with Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks, released on November 20, 2006. A preview of the film was included on the Let There Be Love DVD single, released in November 2005.

The film features a new Oasis song also called "Lord Don't Slow Me Down", written by Noel Gallagher and recorded during the Don't Believe the Truth sessions, Gallagher described it as being "one of the best things, like The Who, The Yardbirds and the Jeff Beck Group combined, and it's got two drum solos on it!". He has also said that his girlfriend thought it was the only Oasis song you could dance to. The song was left off Don't Believe the Truth because Gallagher felt that including it would have meant he'd have been singing too many songs on the record. Italian footballer Alessandro Del Piero also appears in the video signing a shirt for noel.
