Video: Noel Gallagher Plays 'Live Forever' As A Tribute To Prince In Glasgow

The arena turned purple when it housed Prince's last Scottish gig in 2014 and it was lit up again in tribute to the music icon tonight.

Scotland's biggest music venue turned purple last night in tribute to Prince .

The Hydro in Glasgow was bathed in purple light as rockstar Noel Gallagher played a gig there tonight.

The Oasis frontman, now with his own band High Flying Birds, paid his own tribute on stage by blasting out the Prince hit Let's Go Crazy.

He also dedicated Oasis hit Live Forever to the iconic musician.

Noel Gallagher told fans at the gig: "So, I was in a band once. We had an album called Standing on the Shoulders of Giants and one of those giants was Prince.

"So you're going to help me pay tribute to the great man and help me do Live Forever."

Yet Another Review: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds In London

You can’t accuse Noel Gallagher of false promises. “I’m not doing an encore,” he announced, “because to be honest with you I’m off to see Prince and he’s on in ten minutes.” The purple superstar was indeed performing a small semi-secret show on the same night that Gallagher was doing his own, but while Prince was staging a star-studded charity bash Gallagher was doing a gig above a pub that harked back to the early days of Oasis.

Stage production stretched to a black cotton banner with the initials for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds chalked in white. A crowd of men with mod-tinged feather-cut hair threw plastic beer glasses at each other. There was excitement in the air that few could reasonably have expected from a solo gig by Gallagher, who walked out of Oasis in 2009 after brother Liam threw a plum at his head.

There are differences, though. Oasis specialised in brutal rock’n’roll in which anything vaguely esoteric was stamped on, but Chasing Yesterday, Gallagher’s forthcoming second solo album has touches of cosmic jazz. It’s cosmic in the sense of a beer-drinking beat band getting out the kipper ties and adding an organ solo, but the difference is there. In 2011 Gallagher made an album with the psychedelic production duo Amorphous Androgynous and although it was shelved the influence remains.

The concert began with (It’s Good) to be Free, an Oasis B-side from 1994, which was so exciting for the 40-year-old mods in the audience that they had no choice but to get up on each other’s shoulders and sway from side to side. From then on solo material dominated and with it Gallagher proved that he’s drawing from a wider palette than before. On Riverman, one of the best songs on Chasing Yesterday, there was a saxophone solo. Back in the glory years of Oasis even listening to a saxophone was a sackable offence.

Gallagher expressed surprise that a man in the audience knew all the words to Riverman before realising that the man worked in his office. In the main the concert stuck to the kind of emotional rock’n’roll for which Gallagher has such a knack, with the biggest singalong of the night saved for the Oasis classic Don’t Look Back in Anger. It’s an anthem with lots of feeling and no sense whatsoever, making it a perfect accompaniment to the sloppy sentimentality of drunkenness. Then, just as he promised, Gallagher took off to see Prince.

Noel Gallagher Plays New Tracks And Oasis Classics In London

Noel Gallagher played a triumphant set of established hits and new material at the Tufnell Park Dome last night (Monday 2 February) - launching new album, Chasing Yesterday.

Playing for just over an hour, Gallagher’s set list including latest singles 'The Ballad of Mighty I' and 'In the Heat of the Moment', alongside Oasis classic 'It’s Good to be Free' and 'Don’t Look Back in Anger'.

However, fans were not treated to an extended set as, prior to the latter, Gallagher admitted, “They’ll be no encore tonight [because] I’m off to see Prince and he’s on stage in ten minutes”, before responding to a single boo with “don’t knock the Purple One”.

The gig represented a rare opportunity for fans to see Gallagher, who tours more extensively with UK arena dates scheduled for next month and a summer world tour, in such an intimate venue. Fans had had to face the lottery of applying through a ballot for tickets at the 600 capacity venue with thousands missing out, whilst posters plastered around the Dome made it clear that performance was also being filmed so expect to see footage emerge in the not too distant future.

Meanwhile, Noel Gallagher was recently announced as headliner of Calling Festival, at London's Clapham Common and also see appearances from Ryan Adams & The Shining, The Hives, Echo & The Bunnymen with many, many more to be announced.

Calling Festival takes place on Clapham Common on Saturday 4 July. Tickets go on sale at 9am on Friday 6 February.

Noel Gallagher Wraps Up Gig To 'Dash Off' To Watch Prince At Koko

You wait months for one secret gig in London, and then two monumental shows come along at once.

Noel Gallagher and Prince competed for the hottest ticket in town, with the former Oasis star playing to 200 people at Dome Tufnell Park while the US singer performed at Koko in Camden.

But Gallagher appeared to graciously accept defeat, finishing a one-hour set and telling fans he had to “dash off” before heading 10 minutes down the road to watch Prince’s gig.

The Britpop artist, 47, played songs from forthcoming album Chasing Yesterday and finished with Oasis hit Don’t Look Back In Anger. The gig was a warm-up before an arena tour next month which will culminate in a headline slot - his biggest ever as a solo artist - at Calling Festival in Clapham on July 4.

Down the road, Prince, 56, was joined by his band 3RDEYEGIRL and performed a set that included Purple Rain, Let’s Go Crazy, Kiss and When Doves Cry. He finished the impromptu charity show - in aid of Autism Rocks - with a cover of Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough featuring US singer Liv Warfield.

Noel Gallagher: 'Russell Brand Should Stand In The Next Election'

Russell Brand's plans for revolution have been doubted by Noel Gallagher, who says he thinks the comedian's political career might go the same way as his acting career.

Speaking in a new interview, Gallagher was asked about the aspirations his friend Brand has for leading people into a "no-vote" revolution, to which he replied that he thinks the comedian's "heart is in the right place" and suggest that he should stand in the 2015 general election.

"I think his revolutionary ideals might be as short-lived as his acting career!" Gallagher said, adding: "He's a good lad, Russell, and I love him dearly like a boyfriend. I think he should stand in the election, because it's alright saying the words and all, but then you're relying on other people to implement all this stuff you're going on about."

In the same interview with XFM Gallagher said that he is free to perform at Glastonbury in 2015, if organisers want him.

Dave Grohl recently said that Foo Fighters would headline Glastonbury if Oasis and Prince did it too. While not commenting on the possibility of a reunion with brother Liam, Noel went on to praise Grohl and hint that he has a free weekend in June that coincides with the 2015 event.

Noel Gallagher On The Oasis For Glastonbury Rumours: "I'm Available That Weekend"

Noel Gallagher has poured fuel on the rumours that a reformed Oasis might play Glastonbury in 2015 in an exclusive interview with XFM's Jon Holmes this morning.

The comments came after Jon played Noel a clip of Dave Grohl calling on Oasis to reform. The Foo Fighters frontman said his band would play the festival - but only if Oasis and Prince did too.

"He's great," said Noel, "What they say about him is true. He is genuinely one of the nicest men in rock.

"We've done some big gigs with them down the year. Great lads, all of them."

When Jon pressed him for an answer on Glastonbury 2015, Noel gave a short but teasing answer.

"I'm available that weekend - it's not up to me though, is it?"

Foo Fighters Will Agree To Glastonbury If Oasis Reform

Foo Fighters have said they'd agree to headline Glastonbury if Oasis reformed to also play the festival.

Dave Grohl revealed that the group haven't yet been asked to top the bill, but would say yes if Liam and Noel Gallagher played, and Prince agreed to be the third headline act.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1 he explained: "If Prince does it, and Oasis does it, you've got the Foo Fighters, how about that?"

The singer says he hasn't spoken to organiser Michael Eavis or his daughter Emily about headlining, but is interested as Foo Fighters haven't played Glastonbury since 1998.

"He hasn't called me. I mean, I don't want to give out my phone number on air, but I like playing shows! I've been to that festival before. It's pretty fun. We'll see what happens. We'll get a conference call happening, we can work this out. Imagine Prince and Oasis on the telephone, that would be amazing."

As a huge fan of Oasis, Dave has toured with the brothers and spent time with them away from the stage, and is sure the sparring brothers could put their differences aside for the festival.

"In America Oasis sort of crept up on us, and it was one of the first times that an English band became massively enormous in a really long time. We ended up seeing them and playing shows with them and I got to know them a little bit. I love them as people, they're the sweetest people in the world. I know they have this sort of reputation of being brash and nasty, but I don't think they are. I've watched them live and there are not that many bands that can just stand there motionless and make 100,000 people go bananas, and that comes down to the songs. When your songs are that good, you've got something good going on. I miss them.

"If Taylor Hawkins and I can be in a band together, I'm sure that they can be in a band together too."
