Ryan Adams On Oasis: ‘They’re Like Star Wars’

Ryan Adams has spoken out in praise of Oasis – calling on fans to vote for the movie Supersonic at the V05 NME Awards 2017, and comparing the band to Star Wars.

Earlier this week, Adams announced his upcoming 16th album with the new single ‘Do You Still Love Me’. Looking forward to the year ahead, we asked who he’d nominate for the VO5 NME Awards 2017, when he revealed that Supersonic would be his choice for ‘Best Music Film’.

“I walked into the theatre and I was bummed out,” Adams told NME. “I watched Supersonic, and I felt reinvigorated in a way I had not felt for so long. In fact I walked into rehearsals and we did something like six or seven hours straight of songs, where I just threw every single song I had ever written at the band to just see how many they could play until they were stumped. I was just so pumped.

“It’s nice to see how crucial this shit is on film. It should be no secret that being in a rock n’ roll band is fucking amazing and transformative. I thought the director did such a good job, because he made it fun to watch and kept a lot of the stuff out that mind have slowed it down.”

He added: “Oasis are like Star Wars – they’re like the fucking heroes returning. I mean, if you think about it, like Noel Gallagher is fucking Han Solo – he doesn’t give  a shit what you think about him, he’s gonna take the Millennium Falcon, which is his band, and just completely dupe the entire Empire. It really is so important that people know that fucking electric guitars can transform your whole entire spectrum of reality.”

Adams has toured with Oasis in the past, famously recording a cover of ‘Wonderwall’. Earlier this year, Noel Gallagher supported him in the US, with Adams performing renditions of ‘Morning Glory’ and ‘Supersonic’ during his set.

Speaking of the ‘genius’ of the Gallaghers, Adams continued: “One of the really crucial things of that film is that at the time that Oasis made their first record and were gonna become who they were, that most of the stuff around them that was turning to become noticeable was sort of dance music in the beginning of what later would become EDM. And just the early existence of that music, I don’t know much about the categorization of music but maybe that’s what people call like house music? But there wasn’t any band like Oasis when they came out, there wasn’t anything that, in my opinion, sounded anything like, what I think was like a tank made of diamonds, and they were just crushing posers everywhere.”

He added: “That’s what it felt like when I heard those riffs. I was like ‘wow, someone is actually playing like fucking huge riffs’ and the melodies were insane. I don’t ever listen to Oasis and ever feel weighed down by the ego of anyone in the band, even as egotistical as someone might want to say they were in interviews  – although a lot of that I think is them being funny because why not?

“I think the songs are so open, and that why they could play those tremendous concerts where its like a quarter of million people were there singing along, was because they were writing songs that could just open doors to everyone. To me, if anything says that at any one can do this; someone can play a riff on the guitar, and people can get so excited that they remember what that means…it sort of reaffirms the humanity that’s in all of us.”

Watch Ryan Adams Cover Oasis' 'Supersonic' And 'Morning Glory'

Two of the most prolific singer-songwriters are currently on tour together for a brief run of shows and no, I'm not talking about Sting and Peter Gabriel. More like Ryan Adams and Noel Gallagher, who are as good with a guitar as they are with a joke.

Last night in Pittsburgh, Adams nodded to ol' Noel's former band Oasis with a debut cover of "Supersonic" that was preceded by a take on "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" also a debut for Adams and The Shining. Of course, Adams and The Cardinals opened for Oasis on one of their final tours in 2008, and Gallagher and Adams have had respectful words for each other over the years, with Gallagher praising Adams' cover of "Wonderwall," saying he's "the only person who ever got that song right."

Watch video of "Supersonic" and "Morning Glory" below.

Noel Gallagher On Playing Festivals

Noel Gallagher has spoken ahead of his Calling Festival appearance next week.

The former Oasis man will headline the London event on July 4, with the likes of Ryan Adams And The Shining, Wolf Alice, Modest Mouse, Echo & The Bunnymen and others also performing.

Speaking to NME in this week's issue, available digitally and on newsstands now, Gallagher was asked about his plans for what will be High Flying Birds' biggest show to date.

Gallagher replied: "I haven't actually given it much thought. Not sure I see the point in overthinking these things. Just get up there and give it 75%! One always has to save some for the after show you see!"

Quizzed on whether he will play any unusual Oasis songs, Gallagher responded in jest: "Fucking hell, d'you want me to tell you what colour of brown or navy blue bomber jacket I'll be wearing and all?"

In the same interview, Gallagher confirmed that his next record is underway. "I’m already a bit of the way into my next record," he said. "As for what it will eventually say on the cover though remains to be seen."

The new record will be Noel Gallagher’s third album as Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. It follows 'Chasing Yesterday' which was released in February this year and his self-titled 2011 debut.

Noel Gallagher Confirms His Next Album Is Underway

Noel Gallagher has confirmed his next record is underway.

Speaking to NME, the former Oasis man said, "I’m already a bit of the way into my next record. As for what it will eventually say on the cover though remains to be seen."

The new record will be Noel Gallagher’s third album as Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. It follows 'Chasing Yesterday' which was released in February this year and his self-titled 2011 debut.

Next month, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds headline Calling Festival at London's Clapham Common on July 4. The show will be the biggest headline gig he's played in the UK as a solo artist.

The supporting line-up features Ryan Adams, The Hives, Wolf Alice and more.

Discussing his plans for the gig with NME, Gallagher commented: "I haven't actually given it much thought… Not sure I see the point in over-thinking these things. Just get up there and give it 75 per cent. (One always has to save some for the aftershow.)"

Asked which Oasis songs he was planning for the headline set, he added, "Fucking hell… D'you want me to tell you what colour of brown or navy blue bomber jacket I'll be wearing an' all?"

Released in February, 'Chasing Yesterday' went straight to Number One and is now certified gold. Asked how he felt about his numerous achievements, Gallagher praised the new generation of fans now supporting his music.

"I'm not sure why or how it's happened but I'm glad it has, and if this tour is anything to go by then there seems to be yet another generation coming through who are discovering whatever it is I do, two decades after the fact. God bless them."

Meanwhile, Noel Gallagher recently criticised a band for handing him an unlabelled demo CD.

Gallagher stopped midway through a show at the Boston Opera House on Saturday, June 6 to educate the band on proper demo CD protocol.

"When you’re giving away CDs of your shit," Gallagher began, "there’s not even a fucking name of who it is, or what it’s called, or a phone number, or nothing. No song titles, no name, no nothing.

Now unless this is some psychedelic fucking album project, I’m saying, this cunt’s going nowhere. Thank you very much."

Noel Gallagher Would Be Happy To Write Songs For His Brother Liam

Speaking to NME, Noel said that he would be happy to write songs for his brother and former Oasis bandmate and promised that they would be better than those released by Liam's old band Beady Eye.

"I'd write him a few songs, I've got a few songs lying around that he'd be good at singing. But I'm not sure what he plans to do or if plans to do anything," Noel said. Asked what type of songs he would hand to his brother, the High Flying Birds singer added: "Some fucking good ones, better than the lot he was singing last time for sure."

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds will headline London's Calling Festival on July 4. The event, which takes place on Clapham Common, will also see performances from Ryan Adams, The Hives and Echo And The Bunnymen.

Noel Gallagher Plays New Tracks And Oasis Classics In London

Noel Gallagher played a triumphant set of established hits and new material at the Tufnell Park Dome last night (Monday 2 February) - launching new album, Chasing Yesterday.

Playing for just over an hour, Gallagher’s set list including latest singles 'The Ballad of Mighty I' and 'In the Heat of the Moment', alongside Oasis classic 'It’s Good to be Free' and 'Don’t Look Back in Anger'.

However, fans were not treated to an extended set as, prior to the latter, Gallagher admitted, “They’ll be no encore tonight [because] I’m off to see Prince and he’s on stage in ten minutes”, before responding to a single boo with “don’t knock the Purple One”.

The gig represented a rare opportunity for fans to see Gallagher, who tours more extensively with UK arena dates scheduled for next month and a summer world tour, in such an intimate venue. Fans had had to face the lottery of applying through a ballot for tickets at the 600 capacity venue with thousands missing out, whilst posters plastered around the Dome made it clear that performance was also being filmed so expect to see footage emerge in the not too distant future.

Meanwhile, Noel Gallagher was recently announced as headliner of Calling Festival, at London's Clapham Common and also see appearances from Ryan Adams & The Shining, The Hives, Echo & The Bunnymen with many, many more to be announced.

Calling Festival takes place on Clapham Common on Saturday 4 July. Tickets go on sale at 9am on Friday 6 February.

Ryan Adams On Oasis' 'Be Here Now' Album

Ryan Adams has told the NME he does not care what Noel Gallagher thinks about Oasis' 1997 album 'Be Here Now'.

Adams said: “I’m too old to care who likes my records, It’s all bullshit anyway. People make judgements about records but the music is eternal. I like ‘Be Here Now’. I don’t even care if Noel Gallagher doesn’t like it, because you know what? I will take two bong hits and that record will blow my mind.”

Ryan Adams: Noel Gallagher Is A Treasure

Having Noel Gallagher turn up at his concerts always spooked Ryan Adams.

The former Oasis axe-man was a one-time regular at the rocker's gigs in Britain during the noughties.

And he says being in such starry company was hard to cope with.

He recalls: "I could never believe when I was told he was at one of my shows.

"It was amazing because I really treasure that guy."

The respect lead to the 36-year-old rocker covering Wonderwall on his 2004 album Love Is Hell.

Noel returned the favour by having Ryan and his then band The Cardinals support Oasis on their final American tour in 2008.

And as Oasis disintegrated shortly afterwards so did The Cardinals.

Ryan announced his retirement in 2009 – but has now returned with his thirteenth studio album Ashes & Fire.

The Office's Rainn Wilson: Ryan Adams Should Join Oasis

I don’t normally pay attention to the Twitter musings of actors, but we need to keep a keen eye on The Office’s Rainn Wilson because the guy’s attempting to meddle in music for the second time in recent memory and last time Weezer ended up with a quite unfortunate album title. As we all know by now, Noel Gallagher has quit Oasis following a last straw row with his brother, Liam, and the band has split. Here’s what Wilson had to tweet on the subject:

“Liam. You should grab Ryan Adams. He does y’alls songs better.” He then posted a link to Adams’ Grammy-nominated cover of “Wonderwall,” by Oasis.

I’m sure he’s joking, but nerdy rockers are sometimes powerless against Wilson’s charms. Here’s what Rivers Cuomo said just the other day on how Weezer named their 7th LP (via Pitchfork): [Rainn Wilson] has a super-rock persona. When it came time to find a title for the Weezer album, I asked him what he thought the ultimate album title would be, and he said ‘Raditude.’”

A collaboration between Ryan Adams and one of the Gallagher brothers wouldn’t be that random actually, as Adams did join Oasis for a successful (read: drama-free) tour last year, but he seems like more of a Noel man to me. I’ll spare you my opinion, but once I’m on a hit show, I’ll be tweeting all about it.
