Noel Gallagher Supports Jamie Carragher's Testimonial

A raft of Liverpool favourites will pull on red shirts once again next Saturday to help Jamie Carragher celebrate his glittering Anfield career.

Carragher’s eagerly-awaited testimonial game against Everton takes place on September 4 and the Liverpool side that will line up against the Blues will feature several faces who shared in some of the defender’s greatest moments.

Michael Owen and Emile Heskey will reprise their double act from the treble winning season of 2000/01, wearing the numbers – 10 and eight respectively – with which they were synonymous during that glorious campaign.

Steven Finnan, a mainstay of the teams that won the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup 12 months later, will slot in on the right side of Liverpool’s defence, while Jerzy Dudek – one of the heroes from an unforgettable night in Istanbul – will stand between the posts once more.

Danny Murphy will be pulling the strings in midfield, while Stephen Wright, Stephen Warnock, David Thompson and Jason McAteer will be involved, as will Jamie Redknapp; commitments overseas, unfortunately, have prevented Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler from taking part.

Everton boss David Moyes has promised to pick a strong team for the game, which kicks off at 2pm, and it is understood that attempts have been made to see if Duncan Ferguson – with whom Carragher enjoyed many fierce battles – will pull on a blue shirt again.

In the directors box, meanwhile, a number of faces who helped nurture Carragher from promising novice to world class defender will be evident, as men such as Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez, Ronnie Moran, Hughie Macauley, Phil Thompson and Roy Evans have been invited.

Tickets are selling well for the contest – it is the first time since Bruce Grobbelaar’s benefit game ended in a 2-2 draw in October 1992 that Liverpool and Everton have faced each other in a testimonial – and every penny raised will go to charities in Merseyside through the 23 Foundation.

Tickets can be bought from the tickets offices at both Anfield and Goodison and also from the Liverpool Club Shop at Liverpool One in the city centre.

There will be free entry to all members of the armed forces from Merseyside who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq and a number of tickets have gone to the 1,900 charitable organisations in the region.

The theme of the day will be very much centred towards family and Carragher is hoping to see the stands packed with youngsters; in keeping with that, every member of Liverpool and Everton’s Academy have been invited

Carragher, who has made 635 appearances for Liverpool since coming on as a substitute against Middlesbrough in January 1997, is also holding a gala dinner at the Echo Arena convention centre and 20 tables have been added to the original floor plan of 60 due to demand.

Again, all money will go to charity and the night will be hosted by John Bishop; music will be provided by James Walsh from Starsailor, Ian Broudie, The Coral and The Bluetones, while among the unique auction prizes are two Gold discs donated by Noel Gallagher.

Ricky Gervais Inspired By Rockers Richard Ashcroft And Liam Gallagher

Funnyman Ricky Gervais has praised rockers Richard Ashcroft and Liam Gallagher for giving him inspiration for one of his films.

During a Q&A at the Soho Hotel in London for the DVD release of Cemetery Junction, directors Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant admitted Liam, 37, and Richard, 38, were the inspirations behind the comedy-drama.

Gervais, 49, found that actors fell into two categories, half that play society types and half that play violent wife-beating roles.

But the Extras star worked with Stephen to make their characters different and more like rock stars.

He said: 'We didn't want it to be one those really gritty 'isn't England a bit depressing and crap and normal' films.

'We wanted it to be a bit more glorious and evoke those possibly false memories of every day being sunny and brilliant and fun, that's how I remember my childhood.'

Ricky added: 'We cast about a thousand people to try and find these Jimmy Deans and John Travoltas - half of them will be Mr Darcy one day, and the other half will be going, 'You f****** slags.'

'So we had to look to our rock stars like Richard Ashcroft and Liam Gallagher, that's where we rule the world.'

Stephen added: 'This country's always been very good at making rock stars, and rock stars are unashamedly cool but somehow British films are less like that, it's like we're a little bit more embarrassed to be like that.

'We need to be self-conscious and make things seem gloomier and grittier but that wasn't my experience of growing up, everything seemed very cool to me.'

Blue Moon Rising is a documentary film currently in production. The film title is a play on words referring to Manchester City's fan anthem, Blue Moon and chronicles the fortunes of Manchester City Football Club through the 2009-2010 football season.

Shot and produced by Endemol in conjunction with the club, it features exclusive interviews with staff, players, board members and fans throughout the season. The first trailer was unveiled last week and the film is set for theatrical release later this year.

Roberto Mancini, striker Emmanuel Adebayor and a host of other City stars will be at the star-studded Manchester premiere on September 9.

On This Day In Oasis History...

Definitely Maybe is the debut album by English band Oasis, released on August 30th 1994. It was an immediate commercial and critical success in the UK, having followed on the heels of singles "Supersonic", "Shakermaker" and particularly the popular "Live Forever".

Definitely Maybe went straight to number one and 7x platinum in the UK Album charts on initial release. It was the fastest selling debut album of all time in the UK when released. Definitely Maybe marked the beginning of Oasis' success in America, selling over 1 million copies there, although only reaching #58 on the Billboard 200. The album went on to sell over 7.5 million copies worldwide.

In 1997 Definitely Maybe was named the 14th greatest album of all time in a 'Music of the Millennium' poll conducted by HMV, Channel 4, The Guardian and Classic FM. In 2005 Channel 4's '100 Greatest Albums' countdown placed the album at number 6. In 2006 NME placed the album third in a list of the greatest British albums ever, behind The Stone Roses and The Queen Is Dead. In a recent British poll, run by NME and the book of British Hit Singles and Albums, Definitely Maybe was voted the best album of all time with The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band finishing second and Revolver third. Q magazine readers placed it at five on their greatest albums of all time list in 2006 and in that same year NME hailed it as the greatest album of all time. It is frequently referred to as the greatest debut album of all time.

Album History

In 1994, Oasis were seen as a distant echo of the moribund 'Madchester' scene which had exploded in the early 1990s. Unlike other Madchester bands who indulged in experiments with funk, dance or hip-hop, Oasis presented themselves as a relatively straightforward rock and roll band. Along with bands like Blur and The Verve they seemed to encapsulate a new wave, one which did not yet have a name. By the end of the year the media coined the term Britpop, of which Definitely Maybe retrospectively became one of the pivotal albums.

Many of the songs had originally appeared on Oasis' "Live Demonstration" demo recorded in Liverpool the year before with Chris and Tony Griffiths of The Real People. The main recording sessions took longer than expected, with the bulk of the album having to be recorded three different times with Mark Coyle producing, before Owen Morris came up with a mix that everyone was satisfied with. The album cost nearly £85,000 to produce, a huge amount of money for a debut album at the time.

The album title, according to Noel Gallagher, comes from a poster he saw in a pub, although he cannot remember what the poster was advertising.

Noel Gallagher Offered To Pay Bar Bill In Kasabian Wedding Crash Jape

Noel Gallagher was the icing on the wedding cake for Zahl and Hajigul Buhari.

I revealed yesterday how the Oasis legend and Kasabian gatecrashed a wedding do at a Hertfordshire hotel after the Leicester band headlined V Festival in Essex on Sunday.

Noel offered to put cash behind the bar for groom Zahl and bride Hajigul but they were delighted just to have him there.

Zahl told me: "Noel was a real gent. He posed for photos and Kasabian were extremely complimentary to my bride and congratulated us both. It was the perfect end to the perfect day."

Kasabian And Noel Gallagher Crash Wedding Party

Kasabian gatecrashed a wedding shortly after their appearance at the V Festival in Chelmsford on Sunday (August 22), according to reports.

The band were celebrating their headline performance at a nearby hotel when their after show joined up with a wedding party in another room.

Close friend and former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher and drummer Zac Starkey were among Kasabian's guests, according to The Sun.

The two parties apparently spent the night dancing to songs on guitarist Serge Pizzorno's iPod.

Noel Gallagher's In The Studio With Paul Weller

During this backstage interview with Absolute Radio's Geoff Lloyd, Paul reveals that he's turned down an MBE. The Modfather looks back at past festivals, including the first V Festival. He tells Geoff that they've changed because people just want to hear the greatest hits.

Weller also explains how he's been hit by loads of thrown objects and even admits to having lost it with members of the public! When asked about his Mercury Prize nomination, Weller tells Geoff that the award normally goes to someone who nobody has ever heard of, so he's doubtful that he'll win.

The Gallagher brothers also get a mention during the interview as Weller has hired Noel Gallagher as his drummer on some new material he's working on!

The former Jam star also says that he's visited Liam's shop and is going to be wearing a Pretty Green jacket on stage tonight.

Taylor Momsen Loves Oasis

Taylor Momsen spoke on her hope to reunite Oasis brothers Liam and Noel. ‘I am just their biggest fans and I want to support them one day on tour, so I hope they come back,’ she said.

She played an ode to the Mancunian lads, covering their hits in an acoustic set on Saturday.

The star hailed the British crowds saying, ‘They are the best and just get it and know all the words.’

Oasis To Get Back Together In Five Years?

Grant Nicholas from Feeder says he was in the studio next door to Liam Gallagher last week and described the Manc's new material as much heavier and rockier the Oasis.

He said he's mates with both Liam and Noel and reckons they'll get back together in five years.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"The Importance Of Being Idle" is a song on the British rock band Oasis' sixth album, Don't Believe the Truth, written and sung by lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It was the second single released from the album in the UK, on August 22, 2005, where it debuted at #1. It was also the first time that Oasis earned two successive #1's in the same calendar year. It was written by Gallagher sometime during the summer of 2004, before the band made their final attempt at recording what would become Don't Believe the Truth. He got the title from the Mark Twain book of the same name which he found whilst cleaning out his garage (it belonged not to him but to girlfriend Sara McDonald.)

Musically, as Noel has commented, the song sounds like tunes from two British bands, The Kinks and The La's. In particular, the sentiment expressed is noticeably similar to The Kinks' "Sunny Afternoon" and "Dead End Street", and the use of falsetto for every other verse line recalls The La's "Feelin'". The guitar sound is similar also to The La's b-sides; "Clean Prophet" and "Over". It also is a breakaway from the sound of Oasis's latter albums, especially the straight ahead rock 'n' roll anthems of Heathen Chemistry. The keyboard used on the pre-chorus sections was bought by bassist Andy Bell from the auction website eBay.

Noel has said that the lyrics of "The Importance of Being Idle" are inspired by his own laziness. Some of the second verse, with the reference to begging his doctor for "one more line", seems to be referring to an actual event as this resembles Noel's account of how he gave up cocaine in 1998.

Most reviewers acclaimed the track as one of the highlights of Don't Believe the Truth, which itself was widely praised as a marked return to form. The band mentioned in interviews in June that it would become the second single, after the UK Number One "Lyla". The b-sides are Liam Gallagher's "Pass Me Down the Wine" and Gem Archer's "The Quiet Ones."



The promo film was directed by Dawn Shadforth, (whose previous videos include Kylie Minogue's award-winning "Can't Get You Out Of My Head"). Shadforth's film for "The Importance of Being Idle' starred Welsh actor Rhys Ifans and homages the style of early 1960s kitchen sink drama British films, and is set during the build up to a funeral procession in a northern town, with the extravagant undertakers parading the coffin at the video's climax and Ifans playing the part of a high-kicking funeral director. The video is based on the film and play Billy Liar with Ifans playing the role of Billy. Noel and Liam therefore play Shadrack & Duxbury, the owners of the funeral parlour where Billy works. The rest band (Gem,Andy and Zak) make a brief appearance as lazy workers playing cards in an undertaker's office. It was widely acclaimed at the time as being probably the best video Oasis had ever made, not least by the band themselves, who were said to be very happy with the finished product. The video is very similar in style and concept to the music video for "Dead End Street" by The Kinks.

Q Magazine readers placed the song at #1 in a list of 2005's greatest tracks.

The video for the song was voted the video of the year at the NME Awards.

The song is included on Oasis' 'best-of' album Stop the Clocks.
