On August 10th 1996, Oasis played the first of two nights at Knebworth. Support for the two days included The Prodigy, Ocean Colour Scene, Charlatans, Manic Street Preachers, Kula Shaker and Dreadzone.

Review: Oasis at Knebworth, 1996
One in 20 Britons applied for tickets to see Oasis in concert at Knebworth. Our critic joined the crowd on Saturday.
Three million people, 5 per cent of the population, applied for tickets and those lucky enough to get them were treated to two new songs, My Big Mouth and It's Getting Better Man , along with tried and tested hits. With a guest list of 7,000 there were plenty of opportunities for star-spotting: Mick Hucknall of Simply Red, Jarvis Cocker and Kate Moss made their way to the celebrity enclosure to compare bodyguards with Liam Gallagher and Patsy Kensit, and all looked disingenuously surprised when mobbed by amateur paparazzi.
For those not chosen as Kate Moss's plus one, there were tickets still available at a price. Cro-Magnon touts were willing to get you into "The Gig of the Decade" for £300, a sizeable mark-up from £22.50. Once inside, many would have gladly paid £300 to avoid queues. There were 400-yard tailbacks for each bar and toilet. But with the temperature into the 70s and a PA so powerful everyone was guaranteed to leave touched by tinnitus, such matters were of little importance. Oasis took to the stage at 9pm, greeted by a roar so huge that flocks of birds took to the sky from Knebworth's old oaks.
"Hello, hello, hello," Liam said, making a fairly good job of John Lennon's famous "retard" impression. "Let's go." And off they went, kicking out the music that has made the Top 40 truly exciting for the first time in ten years and working hard for the estimated £5.6 million the weekend accrued.
Joined for the inevitable encore of Champagne Supernova by The Stone Roses's ex-guitar player John Squire, Oasis bowed out in a blaze of guitar solos and a firework display. As many tired and emotional punters fell over backwards, disorientated from staring at the sky so long, Martin Carr of the Boo Radleys said: "Everyone in Britain - except Damon from Blur - loves Oasis. They can do no wrong." He would appear to be right.

"Live Forever" is a song by British rock group Oasis. Written by guitarist Noel Gallagher, the song was released as the third single from their debut album Definitely Maybe on 8 August 1994, just prior to that album's release.
Gallagher wrote the song in 1991, before he joined Oasis. Inspired by The Rolling Stones' "Shine a Light," "Live Forever" features a basic song structure and lyrics with an optimistic outlook that contrasted with the attitude of the grunge bands popular at the time. The song was the first Oasis single to enter the top ten in the United Kingdom, and garnered critical acclaim.
Background and recording
Noel Gallagher wrote "Live Forever" in 1991, while working for a building company in his hometown of Manchester. After his foot was crushed by a pipe in an accident, he was given a less-strenuous job working in the storeroom, allowing him more time to write songs. One night he was listening to The Rolling Stones' album Exile on Main St. While playing one of his own chord progressions, Gallagher noted that it sounded good against one of the vocal melodies from the album: "It was the bit from 'Shine a Light' that goes [sings], 'May the good lord shine a light on you,'" Gallagher recalled. Gallagher incorporated the melody, changing the line to "Maybe I don’t really want to know". For a period afterwards, that was the only part of the song Gallagher had completed.
The song was later instrumental in helping the band secure their record deal with Creation Records. Reflecting on when he first heard the song, Creation boss Alan McGee recalled "It was probably the single greatest moment I've ever experienced with them."
The demo version of "Live Forever" begins with an acoustic guitar intro. While recording the album version, the record's producer Owen Morris cut out this intro and replaced it with a drumbeat played by Tony McCarroll. Morris further cut a second section in Noel's guitar solo. Although Gallagher was upset, Morris felt the part had sounded "a bit like fucking Slash from Guns N' Roses".
Reception
"Live Forever" was released on 8 August 1994 as the band's third single, a month before the release of their debut album Definitely Maybe. The song had been part of the band's set for longer than a year at that point, and had amassed so many mentions in reviews of the group that "its release [as a single] had long seemed inevitable." In its review of the single, NME found "Live Forever" to be an improvement over Oasis' previous singles, concluding, "Basically, what thus far looked like obnoxious Manc arrogance suddenly looks like sheer effortlessness. A terrific record."
While Oasis' first two singles, "Supersonic" and "Shakermaker", were modestly received, it was "Live Forever" that "got the world's attention." "Live Forever" became Oasis' first top ten hit, reaching number ten on the British singles charts in 1994. In 1995, the song became the band's first chart success in the United States, reaching number two and ten on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, respectively. Noel Gallagher commented on the praise given to the song: "People said to me after 'Live Forever', 'Where are you gonna go after that?' And I was like, I don't think it's that good. I think it's a fucking good song, but I think I can do better."
"Live Forever" has garnered additional acclaim years after its release. In 2006, "Live Forever" was named the greatest song of all time in a poll released by Q; the song had ranked ninth in a similar Q poll three years before. In 2007, "Live Forever" placed number one in the NME and XFM poll of the 50 "Greatest Indie Anthems Ever". The song was selected by Noel Gallagher for inclusion on Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks in 2006.
Music videos
Two music videos were made for "Live Forever" for British and American airplay. The original video, directed by Carlos Grasso, features unusual imagery such as Liam Gallagher sitting on a chair affixed to a wall, and a number of scenes are devoted to the band burying drummer Tony McCarroll alive. Some of the UK version of the promotional video was filmed at the Strawberry Fields memorial, the area of New York City's Central Park dedicated to John Lennon—the single cover features 251 Menlove Avenue, the childhood home of Lennon. The American video, directed by Nick Egan, features the band playing in an office with pictures of Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Marc Bolan, and Bobby Moore on the wall. Both videos are included on the 2004 Definitely Maybe DVD.

Gallagher continues his criticism of streaming services following take down of Tidal.
Noel Gallagher has voiced his opinion on Apple's new music streaming service Apple Music following recent disparaging remarks made about rival platform Tidal.
In May, Gallagher was quoted as saying that the artists that helped launch Jay Z's Tidal thought they were "the fucking Avengers". Commenting on their goals to "save music", the former Oasis guitarist said that "they might want to write a decent chorus for a fucking start".
Now, speaking to the Varvet International podcast, Gallagher has said that while he admits that streaming is "clearly the future" because "people wiser than me tell me that it is", the lack of record sales in modern music "makes him sad".
Gallagher explained his feelings: "If you tell me now that the record buying era is over that makes me sad, that the culture of buying and believing in a record is over. That era is over and the belief is that music is for hire and for rent, the money that you pay lets you access everybody’s music but own none of it. I think that’s a sad day. I understand that it’s the future, but it’s a sad day."
He then shifted his focus to Apple Music, saying of their launch of 24/7 global station Beats 1: "Apple Music, world radio, is that some sort of George Orwell shit going on?"
"How can you be so arrogant that you can say 'We now fucking own world radio'. It came up on my phone, it’s there. What would I listen to? It's not playing The Kinks. Unless there’s a fucking section that says 'Noel Gallagher’s music collection' then I won’t be listening to it.
"I don’t know the idea, what is it exactly? You pay 10 pound a month and then think ‘Mmm, I’m in a jazz mood today’ and then you’re not listening to yours, you’re letting someone else make the decision and I don’t know."
Referring to Apple's new 'Connect' feature that allows fans to follow artists they like, Gallagher continued: "Who gives a fuck what the artist is doing? My love for The Smiths never suffered because I didn’t know what they were doing. They were either on tour, disappeared and then put an album out and we all said ‘Wow, fucking hell an album’s coming out, what’s it called? Nobody knows’.
"Who cares what fucking Thom Yorke is up to? Seriously who gives a shit? I'd find it creepy if everyone wanted to know what I was up to."

DJ and producer Armand Van Helden has responded to recent comments made by Noel Gallagher relating to EDM acts headlining festivals.
Gallagher recently made headlines by dismissing "DJs pressing play on a CD player" during their performances.
The former Oasis man also told NME of Swedish DJ Avicii: "I don’t know anything about Avicii. I don’t wish to know anything about Avicii. It sounds like an artist from the Renaissance period."
With Avicii replying by labelling Gallagher a "bitter old time rocker", fellow EDM producer Van Helden has hit back at the veteran musician's remarks.
"Any real musician is going to look at a DJ or an EDM artist and be like 'What is that and how did that even work in the first place?'. If you're out there on stage and you're a drummer, a guitarist a frontman or whatever – you're a band, that's just raw talent being exposed on a stage," he told Gigwise.
He added: "With the chemistry going on, that's just a magical moment. With a DJ or the EDM thing, they don't get it. It's a completely different thing – the youth is always supposed to piss off the elders. The youth will always find a way to make sure that their parents don't like their music. To me, EDM, dance music and DJ culture is just following in this path that we've been in forever."
Van Helden, who has worked with Dizzee Rascal, Daft Punk, Bloc Party and more, added: "When jazz was brand new, all of the people that first heard it called it 'cacaphone' - 'That's just a bunch of noise, that's not real music'. Jazz is the music we're talking about right now. Jazz now is considered the most musical you can be."

EDM producer Deadmau5, on the other hand, recently spoke out in defence of Gallagher.
In a blog posted to Tumblr, Zimmerman took aim at CD-ing playing DJs: "Are you or are you not a guy who can use a computer to make music? Because you're making in upwards of 200K to play a fucking CD…. so… wait. why?
"With all the resources you have attained in the past X years of getting to where you are now…. WOULD IT FUCKING KILL YOU, to be able to add some sort of modularity, performance, showmanship BEYOND putting a fist in the air, telling people to make noise, and or playing the top line on an invisible keyboard in the air to show the crowd 'HEY! EVERYONE! THIS LEAD GOES HERE! WATCH MY HAND. IT GOES DOOT DOOT DOOT DOOT.'"
He added: "Do with an inexhaustible amount of income from all the good fine folk who gave you way too much money to be up there…. you couldnt even be fucked to plug in a keyboard to play 4 fucking notes from time to time?
"Look, you MADE the fucking track, you HAVE the stems (at least you BETTER have them fucking stems) DO SOMETHING. ANYTHING. You're a fucking act. You're beyond a CD player. At least YOU FUCKING BETTER BE if im going to pay 100 bucks to watch you.
"So you can't play a keyboard? COOL! ME NEITHER! MIDI bro. It's been around since the 80s which is about 11 years before you were even fucking conceived. And it STILL works great.
"Please, stop fucking up 'EDM' with your fucking bullshit lazy CD playing and get to fucking work like the many others who are… then, the people who do put forth the bits when they can, don't look as fucking stupid as you."
Deadmau5 concluded: "I think this hits the core of what Noel Gallagher was hinting at. Not EDM in general."

“Just because I didn’t have any f***ing money to speak of until I was 26, I’m not going to deny them private school, nice clothes, holidays, cars and all that s***. I would have to be a f***ing a***hole to toughen the kids up and all that.

Manchester City’s decision to sign England midfielder Fabian Delph has been described as 'odd' by lifelong Citizens fan Noel Gallagher.
Delph performed a miraculous U-turn by joining last season’s Premier League runners-up in an £8m deal from Aston Villa earlier this month, and was heavily criticised for the manner of his exit from the Midlands club
The 25-year-old, along with Raheem Sterling and Patrick Roberts, have added to City’s dwindling home-grown quota, but Gallagher isn’t convinced the midfielder will feature regularly.
“Out of the two signings [Delph and Sterling], that one [Delph] was the oddest one,” Gallagher told the Sports Bar.
“I’m not sure how that’s going to work out. He’s got to get in front of Yaya [Toure], [David] Silva, [Samir] Nasri, Sterling and Fernandinho. There’s about six other experienced players in front of him.”
But, while the capture of Delph hasn’t particularly enthused Gallagher, the rock star believes the ex-Villa captain is a like-for-like replacement for James Milner, who joined Liverpool after his contract expired at the Etihad, and will grow into his role.
He has also been comforted by the nature of City’s recruits this summer, with younger players seemingly prioritised to compensate for what was an ageing squad last season.
On Delph’s arrival, Gallagher added: “He will replace Milner. He’s a good player and he might have a season of being on the fringes and then he might become a regular starter.
“But what I do like about the players City have signed and been linked with is they are all in their 20s, so clearly they are building for the next six years.”

England endured a disastrous 2014 World Cup campaign, miserably failing to pick up a single victory as Roy Hodgson’s men fell at the group stages.
They have since recovered well to top their Euro 2016 qualifying group with a 100 per cent record to date, but Gallagher isn’t convinced any improvements have been made since the debacle in Brazil.

Now one of his recent targets, Swedish DJ and producer Avicii, has hit back after Gallagher dismissed EDM as “a dude in a hat and a pair of fake DJ decks pressing play on a CD player” by posting a South Park clip on Instagram and calling him a “silly sausage”. Shots fired!
Gallagher had shared the top of the bill with Avicii, David Guetta, Kasabian and The Prodigy at Scotland’s T In the Park festival earlier this month and told the XFM that it was “disturbing” that the lineup was headlined by DJs and older rock acts. “It’s quite telling … that still at festivals the biggest draw are bands who have been around for ten years” he explained. “Radiohead, Coldplay, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers. It’s all bands that have been going fifteen years. So once that generation of nineties bands eventually decides they’ve made enough money and will retire, then what are we left with? … [It’s] quite a bleak future.”
But Avicii disagrees. “There are still good bands, still making great music that changes peoples lives,” Avicii wrote in his Instagram response. “What is really sad is hearing a old time musician like yourself confessing so bluntly and openly to not having an open mind to new music by dissing shit u havnt even heard , I really didnt think someone whose whole image is being witty would turn all stereotype ‘bitter ol timer rocker’ like that lol.” The producer goes on to dare Gallagher to still say the same thing after listening to his new album Stories, which includes collaborations with with Jon Bon Jovi, Billie Joe Armstrong, Chris Martin, Wyclef Jean, Serj Tankian and Matisyahu.
Gallagher released his second solo album Chasing Yesterday in February and recently confirmed that he’ll return to Australia for a tour in 2016.

Michael Clarke’s side were in deep trouble at stumps on day one of the third Test against England at Edgbaston after being bowled out for just 136.
In response, England were 3-133 at the end of the day’s play and eyeing off a significant first-innings lead.
In a wide-ranging interview with radio station Talksport in England, Gallagher took the chance to aim fire at Australians.
“I don’t watch a lot of cricket … but I watch the Ashes,” Gallagher said.
“The Australians are so childish. Have you ever been to Australia? Fascinating place … it’s full of Australians.
“I was watching local TV news once and I thought I was watching ‘Monty Python’ … They were showing a Wellington [boot] throwing competition.”
Gallagher, of course, is no stranger to criticising Aussies, famously ranting about the Socceroos in 2006 and admitting he wanted to slap Tim Cahill.
“Stick to the Aussie rules and the tennis and the cricket and the rugby – you are good at that,” Gallagher told AAP.
“Football is the game of the intelligentsia and you are s**t at it. You will never win anything so give it up.
“What do they call them, the Socceroos? Do me a f**king favour, you could come up with a better nickname than that.
“I don’t know, there is something about him [Cahill]. I would love to kick him right in the bo**ocks.
“He has just got one of those faces. Don’t you find his face really slappable? I can assure you, lots of people in England do.”
