Another On This Day In Oasis History...

"I'm Outta Time" is a song by English rock band Oasis, featured on their seventh studio album, Dig Out Your Soul. The second single from the album, succeeding "The Shock of the Lightning", "I'm Outta Time" was written by lead vocalist Liam Gallagher and released on 1 December 2008.

Composition

The song bears similarity, in style, to John Lennon's work in the early 1970s. The piano which features on the track partly emulates that of Lennon's "Jealous Guy", with the three octave jumps in C major. The song also has a backing piano part similar in content to that of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life", which also contains a three octave jump in C major. Liam jokingly claims that it took him nine years to write the song. However, in a different interview Liam Gallagher claimed that he wrote the song "While sitting on the end of my bed".

The song features a short speech sample from John Lennon taken from one of his last interviews in 1980. The speech sample says: "As Churchill said, it's every Englishman's inalienable right to live where the hell he likes. What's it going to do, vanish? Is it not going to be there when I get back?".

Reception

The song has been noted as one of the highlights of the album by fans, as well as the band themselves, with guitarist Noel Gallagher labelling it "deceptively brilliant". It has also been praised by music critics, with NME calling it a return to form, and comparing it to the music of Oasis-admired rock band The Beatles.

It charted at number 12 in the UK Singles Chart – the first Oasis single to miss the top ten since 1994, ending the band's streak of 22 consecutive top tens. It spent only two weeks in the UK top 75, the least ever by any Oasis single. Although only peaking at number 48 in France, the song spent a total of 28 weeks in the French Singles Chart, the most ever by any Oasis single.

Music video

The music video for "I'm Outta Time" was released in November 2008. Filmed in black and white, it shows Liam Gallagher, the only band member to appear in the clip, on a "surreal journey through a moon-lit English landscape". Directed by W.I.Z., it was filmed around Bourton-on-the-Water. At the end of the video, Liam is filmed in a close-up profile shot lying down. This bears resemblance to the back cover artwork for John Lennon's album Imagine. It also resembles the cover of Lennon's 1973 album Mind Games.

Covers

The song was covered by singer Lily Allen on BBC's Live Lounge on 2 December 2009.

Noel Gallagher ‘To Be Paid Thousands’ For John Lewis Christmas Advert

It’s tradition for the annual John Lewis Christmas advert to bring a smile to the Nation’s face every year, but in 2015 Noel Gallagher will be smiling bigger than anybody else as the ad is apparently going to earn him thousands.

That’s a pretty nifty Christmas bonus, isn’t it?

The traditionally tear-jerking advert isn’t set to debut until tomorrow morning, but it has already been confirmed that it features Oasis track ‘Half The World Away’, which was written by Noel.

The song has been covered by unknown Norwegian singer, Aurora, but The Sun report that Noel will still rake in thousands of pounds in royalties for the store using the song - which you might recognise as the theme tune for The Royle Family.

Stars such as Lily Allen and Tom Odell have previously recorded songs for the advert, and a source told The Sun that John Lewis opted to use Aurora instead of an established artist because her voice is so “quirky”.

They explained: “There have been lots of options and the process has been kept top secret. Even though Aurora is a complete unknown, they felt her quirky voice is perfect for the song.

“There were initially some discussions about the song being a cover of Steve Winwood’s Higher Love, but the Oasis track won out.”

So far we have only seen an Adele-esque teaser of the ad during Sunday night’s X Factor, which simply displayed the hashtag #OnTheMoon in John Lewis’ famous font.

Needless to say, we can’t wait for the final product to truly kick off the festive season tomorrow morning.

Oasis' 'Half The World Away' To Feature In John Lewis 2015 Christmas Advert?

Retailers John Lewis have declined to comment on reports that their Christmas 2015 advertising campaign will be soundtracked by an Oasis song.

Interest in the John Lewis adverts has increasingly grown in recent years with contemporary artists covering older material in a stripped-back fashion. Last year saw Tom Odell doing 'Real Love' by John Lennon while Lily Allen's cover of Keane's 'Somewhere Only We Know' was a hit in 2013.

Marketing Magazine reports that Oasis song 'Half The World Away', better known as the theme tune to BBC comedy The Royle Family is "in the running" for this year's advert. The advertising campaign traditionally kicks off in early November, meaning any song choices would likely have been made by this point in October.

However, a spokesperson for John Lewis said that "a number [of tracks are] still under consideration", adding: "Speculation about every element of our Christmas advert happens every year. However, we can confirm that at this point in time, neither the track nor the artist have been confirmed."

The John Lewis advert trend took off in 2010 when Ellie Goulding's cover of 'Your Song' by Elton John hit Number One. However, the first John Lewis advert song came the year before with a folk cover of Guns N' Roses' 'Sweet Child Of Mine'.

Emily Eavis: Oasis Not Playing Glastonbury

Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis has tweeted to confirm that Oasis are not playing Glastonbury this year.

Bookies had suspended bets on the band playing after Liam Gallagher sent a cryptic series of tweets, using letters to spell out the name of his former band.

This year's Saturday headliner still hasn't been announced.

It's 20 years since the release of Oasis' debut album Definitely Maybe.

Eavis confirmed the band wouldn't be appearing in a simple tweet, responding to someone asking her directly.

Gallagher's tweet could have been linked to the fact he was pictured this week with Oasis band mate Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs.

The pair apparently had a drink together, with Bonehead tweeting the word 'pub' in a similar style to Liam's message.

Arcade Fire and Kasabian are the headliners for the Friday and Sunday nights of the festival, held in Somerset at the end of June.

The Black Keys, Dolly Parton and Lily Allen are some of the other acts performing over the weekend.

Liam Gallagher To Attend The Chelsea Flower Show

Rock wildman Liam Gallagher has found an oasis of calm — the Chelsea Flower Show.

He will attend the annual gardening event on the same day as the Queen.

The ex-Oasis frontman, 40, asked for tickets to a VIP preview day of the show, which is celebrating its 100th year.

A source said: “Liam is one of the most unlikely guests in the event’s history.

“His rampaging days are definitely over — which is a relief to organisers given the importance of some guests.”

Liam — set to release a new album with his band Beady Eye — is better known for planting one on photographers, than for planting seeds.

He is not the only pop star due at Monday’s preview, where attractions range from The Sun’s garden to stands selling botanical etchings.

Veterans Rod Stewart and Ringo Starr, plus singer Lily Allen are also due to attend.

My View

By PETER SEABROOK, Gardening Editor

I’M delighted Liam is coming to his senses in his more mature years and appreciating the good things in life... growing your own.

Gardeners grow smiles. They smile with success — and when they give their produce away, they are always greeted with more smiles.

Noel Gallagher Gets All The Attention From The Ladies At Post-Brits Party

Of all the hot guys that attended the Sony Music post-Brits party (Harry Styles, Labrinth, Liam Payne and Louis Smith to name a few) we never expected Noel Gallagher to be the one who got all the attention from the ladies.

But attention from the ladies he got, as these pictures prove! Lily Allen couldn’t wait to give the High Flying Birds star a kiss on the red carpet at the party, and DJ Jo Whiley was also keen to get in on the action.

We can’t decide if it’s Noel’s music talent they’re after, or his incredibly-sized cranium.

Noel attended the party – hosted by Sony Music for the music stars on its label – with his wife Sara McDonald, who managed to grab her hubby for at least one picture. We'd like to think she was showing Lily and Jo who's boss!
