Noel Gallagher And Kasabian To Record A New Version Of 'Walking In The Air'

Noel Gallagher and Kasabian are reportedly among artists in line to record a new version of 'Walking in the Air'.

The festive classic is to be given an update for an upcoming new version of Christmas animated classic The Snowman on Channel 4 this December.

Editors are also said to have expressed interest in recording a cover version of the song, reports The Mirror.

"The Snowman animated film, from which the song comes, is getting a modern twist and there are a lot of beardy blokes - who remember the film from their childhood - who are really keen to get involved," an insider claimed. "Everybody wants to pay homage to the Yuletide carrot-nosed legend.

"Tom Meighan and Serge Pizzorno from Kasabian and Tom Smith from Editors were among the first to be asked, but the producers hope to rope in the likes of Noel Gallagher and the indie elite, too.

"Nobody wanted to do a straight cover of such a classic song, so it had to be a bit different. This was the only way The Snowman could possibly get any cooler."

The track will reportedly be recorded by the end of November for inclusion in the film.

Channel 4 confirmed plans to make a new version of the classic 1982 film last December. It was originally stated that 'Walking in the Air' would be replaced with a new original song.

'Walking in the Air' was performed by Peter Auty in the original film, while Aled Jones scored a big hit with his version in 1985.

The Snowman producer John Coates passed away in September, after working on the new version.

Noel Gallagher: David Bowie Is In The Same League As John Lennon

There was a time when Noel Gallagher walked the earth with the imperious swagger of a rock ’n’ roll demigod. His band, Oasis, was in the process of selling 70 million records and earning roughly twice that many headlines in the United Kingdom alone.

Gallagher and his younger brother, Liam, were the faces of the band, and to describe them as “quotable” is inadequate beyond all measure. Everything they said, every backstage brawl they had and every single they released caused earthquakes.

This was in the latter half of the 1990s, when copies of 1994’s “Definitely Maybe” and 1995’s “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” were flying off the shelves — yes, there were still shelves — at a dizzying rate. The band continued for five more albums and dozens more fistfights before Noel had enough and left the band in 2009.

The headlines, however, have never stopped, and most of them are about a reunion.

“They live in hope, and good for them,” Gallagher said. “I get asked it every day and it’s written about virtually every week in Britain, but it’s not gonna happen. The three reasons bands re-form are for money, unfinished business and to get the rightful acclaim that they thought was theirs in the first place. But we had all that.”

Rest assured that Gallagher remains as quotable as ever. While chatting about his strong new album, “Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds,” and a tour with Snow Patrol that stops at the Louisville Palace Sunday night, he was charming, very funny, spectacularly profane and said “D’you know what I mean?” roughly 140 times in 22 minutes.

In America, Gallagher vacillates between headliner and opening act, while in Europe he performs in stadiums. He seems happy with life as a solo artist, and his band’s first tour has done well enough that it was extended from six months to 12, while the album has spawned a pair of Top 20 singles in the UK, including the excellent “If I Had a Gun ... .”

A few things have changed. He quit smoking, has cut back quite a bit on drinking and even goes to bed early, all due to the responsibilities he now has with his name above the title.

“I used to kind of shuffle onstage with Oasis and nobody really took much ------ notice of me, but now you’ve got to be on it, from first song to the last,” he said. “The way I used to be with Oasis, staying up until 5 o’clock in the morning debating whether David Bowie was in the same league as John Lennon, I can’t do that anymore. Got to go to bed.

“And for the record, David Bowie is in the same league as John Lennon. ... Song for song, they’re pretty equal until you realize that Bowie has got one green eye and one red eye. What the ----? ----- hell! He might be better than Lennon. He’s got two different-coloured eyes! Unbelievable.”

Gallagher didn’t rush into a solo career, working on his album for nearly two years (he actually recorded two albums, although he said that he’ll re-record the second before releasing it). The result is less a collection of singles and more of what he calls “a proper album,” with a unified story. It’s a result, he said, of writing songs that he would sing instead of Liam.

“With a song like ‘If I had A Gun ... ,’ for instance, I know who that song is about, so I as the writer am able to deliver that song in the correct way because I ------ wrote it about something that’s real to me,” he said. “If someone else is writing words for you, how can you possibly have any connection to that, d’you know what I mean?

“The happy accident is that whatever I was writing about that was going on around me, people have taken it and they see it as about them, d’you know what I mean, and that’s ------ mind-blowin’. It’s just ------ magic, that’s what it is. I am as in awe of that as you are, trust me.”

Gallagher’s show Sunday — his first time in Kentucky — comes near the end of his year-long tour. Soccer will be getting serious soon in Britain and Gallagher is eager to watch Manchester City, his home team. He’ll miss America, though.

“One of the great things about touring America, and this is a fact, is that you get to do concerts in America where people are there to listen to the music,” he said. “In England, it’s a bit more about fashion and who you’re sleeping with and what shoes you’re wearing.

“In America, people aren’t interested in what shoes you’re wearing. They want you to play the ------ songs and be good. Don’t look good, be good. Look good if you can, y’know, but actually be good. And fortunately for me, I’m pretty ------ good.”

Is Liam Gallagher Set To Perform An Acoustic Set In January?

The Sun reported in September that Liam Gallagher will be making his first acoustic performance in January as part of London Fashion Week and that only 120 people will hear eight songs he is set to play.

Taken from a recent interview with Pretty Green's Head of Design Pat Salter spoke to GQ Magazine.

What do you have planned next?

We want to do more on the accessories side of things - we have a completely new shoe range launching next season which is exciting. The next big thing is our showing at London Collections: Men in January.

No official word yet but I will keep you informed.

Review And Gallery: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In Kansas

Though it wasn’t officially billed as one, Thursday’s show at the Midland theater featured co-headliners.

Snow Patrol played the evening’s final slot, but it was clear that many of the 1,300 or so fans were there to see the second of three bands: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

The double bill turned out to be a blessing after a mechanical issue shortened Snow Patrol’s set.

Gallagher was the main songwriter, lead guitarist and singer with the British rock band Oasis, which called it quits in 2009. This year he launched the Birds, his first post-Oasis solo project. Oasis hadn’t been in Kansas City since a show at Memorial Hall in 1994, so there was plenty of anticipation among the group’s fans.

He is touring off the Birds’ self-titled first album, a collection of songs that bear many of the traits of his Oasis material: big guitars, lovelorn lyrics, thick harmonies and sweet, sticky melodies. His hour-long set featured several Birds tracks, but not before he fed the early arrivals a treat: “It’s Good to be Free,” an Oasis B-side. (It appeared some people were surprised by Gallagher’s 8:10 p.m. start, apparently figuring he was the headliner.)

From there Gallagher and his band turned to the “Birds” album, starting with “Everybody’s On the Run,” a gust of British anthem-rock with a slight psychedelic accent, then “Let the Lord Shine a Light on Me” and “If I had a Gun,” a heart-on-the-sleeve love ballad (“If I had a gun/I’d shoot a hole in the sun/And love would burn this city down for you.”)

But Gallagher was happy to indulge those who came to hear songs from the band that made him (and his brother, Liam) famous and infamous. The acoustic version of “Wonderwall” was nice; the closer, “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” now 17 years old, generated lots of singing and faraway, nostalgic gazes.

Gallagher also tossed in some lesser-known songs and B-sides: “Talk Tonight” and “(I Wanna Live in a Dream in my) Record Machine,” an Oasis song that appears on the “Birds” album. Throughout his set, he was crusty but congenial, chatting and sparring lightly with his crowd up front. It wasn’t an Oasis show, but for those of us who never saw his band, it was a satisfying substitute.

Thursday’s show was the fourth time in five years or so that Snow Patrol has performed in Kansas City. A couple of those shows, especially its first at the Uptown Theater, were exceptional. They are a suitable paring with Gallagher’s band; their music shares some of the same traits. Gary Lightbody, the band’s lead singer, is a dynamic frontman, the type who can rev up a crowd and stoke the mood inside a big room.

Things were going well for about a half-dozen songs, including “Hands Open,” “Take Back This City” and “This Isn’t Everything You Are.” Then something went awry on stage. Lightbody seemed flustered and distressed, and the band continued to perform a half-acoustic set, he without his guitar. After the show, Lightbody’s Twitter message said: “Thanks Kansas City for your warmth. It wasn’t the show we wanted to give you but after the guitar systems went down we gave you all we had.”

To the band’s credit, with sport and grace, it made the best of a situation that could have ended the show. Instead it delivered a few of its big numbers, such as “Chasing Cars” and “Just Say Yes.” There was even an encore: “Life-ning.”

In the end, Snow Patrol played an 11-song set that lasted a bit more than an hour. Lightbody apologized a few times for what happened and thanked the crowd for its patience. But it’s unlikely too many people who were there will look back on this night in anger. The other headliner made certain of that.

Pretty Green's Pat Salter On Working With Liam Gallagher And More

As head of design at Pretty Green, Pat Salter is Liam Gallagher's right hand man, charged with turning the Beady Eye frontman's vision into a wearable reality. The former head of denim development at Ted Baker, Salter was appointed after a chance meeting with Liam in London last year. During his tenure, he has kicked the three-year-old brand up a gear, introducing the smarter Black Label line as well as expanding the denim offering from three pairs of jeans to a whole range of hard-wearing workwear.

GQ.com talked to the designer to pick his brain about what is like to work with one of the most outspoken individuals in British music.

GQ.com: How does the creative process work between you and Liam?
Pat Salter: Liam's a very hands-on boss. At the beginning of the season we have a design meeting and discuss where his head's at with the collections - what sort of mood he's feeling and what he's into at that particular time. Then I go away and create a mood board around those ideas. Unfortunately I can't buy the amount of clothes that he does but he has a huge archive of clothing that he selects from his wardrobe to build the collection around. He doesn't sit there drawing, but he's got a lot of ideas - being in a band, he's a creative guy.

Who is your best-dressed British man?
It's got to be Brian Jones. Obviously if you dressed like that now you wouldn't get very far walking down your local high street, but every picture of him is cool. I also like late Sixties/early Seventies Michael Caine. You've got to throw Michael Caine in there too. Don't get me wrong, that's not how I dress - I don't walk around with big floppy rabbit fur hats with feathers in them, but you can't deny how great those guys looked: clashing shoes, clashing patterns, clashing fabrics, velvet, corduroy. It was chaos, but it worked.

What are the five items a man should have in his wardrobe?
Firstly, a decent pair of well-fitting selvedge jeans from Japan. Not a reproduction pair - a real hardcore pair of wear-in-yourself Japanese jeans. Then a white v-neck T-shirt and a cool bit of outerwear (I would go for a Stone Island CP parka). On the shoe front you need a pair of classic sneaker pumps. Finally you need a slim-fitting black suit tucked away in your wardrobe that can be worn at smarter events.

Who is your Bond of choice?
Straight away my brain went to Sean Connery, but I'm going for Roger Moore. Those tailored suits with nipped-in waists and pastel colours: you couldn't wear his stuff unless you were a make-believe secret agent.

Will Pretty Green ever do black tie?
Liam goes to a lot of smarter events these days, so, I can't definitely say yes, but it's a distinct possibility.

What is the most stylish film and why?
Get Carter is the obvious answer, but I'm going to say Star Wars. Just look at the Stormtroopers: those costumes are as cool today as they were when they came out in the Seventies.

Can you recommend a good book?
Ideas from Massimo Osti. He was the brains behind a lot of great brands - including my favourite, Stone Island CP -  and this is a photographic biography of his genius. Sad times, good book.

What do you have planned next?
We want to do more on the accessories side of things - we have a completely new shoe range launching next season which is exciting. The next big thing is our showing at London Collections: Men in January…

After Liam presented his GQ Men Of The Year award, will we be seeing Bradley Wiggins in the next campaign?
They struck up quite a rapport at the GQ Awards, didn't they? Wiggins is a dude and he's into the same scene as us, but as to whether he'll do stuff with us? Watch this space.
