Noel Gallagher On Brendan Rodgers, David Silva And More

Former Oasis lead guitarist Noel Gallagher was kept on a tight leash on his return to football punditry, but when asked for his opinion he added a unique edge to discussions.

The Manchester City fan, who has launched a solo career since quitting Oasis in 2009, praised the efforts of Brendan Rodgers, or 'The Brodge' as he called him, in turning Liverpool's season around.

Sitting between Jermaine Jenas and Mark Lawrenson, Gallagher said: "We thought the powers of The Brodge were waining, but he's turning it around."

"They're winning games without [Steven] Gerrard now. We need them to keep United out of the top four as City fans."

Having appeared on Football Focus in 2012, Gallagher kept his normally colourful language under check, and added his opinions little by little.

On the topic of trialling tighter monitoring of diving, he said: "Where do you start, where do you stop?"

"The way managers are digging referees out, if you were thinking about becoming a referee you would think 'why would I bother?'."

"The referee [in the Spurs game] was particularly psychedelic, but managers have to carry the can somewhere. [The referees] are only human."

Some fans took to Twitter to express their outrage that Gallagher was invited onto BBC Two's late-night programme, and presenter Mark Chapman was quick to highlight he was there to offer the fans' view.

It was not long before he was given a lengthy spell of air time to discuss Manchester City's title race and Champions League chances.

Ahead of their game against Newcastle United on Saturday, Gallagher had said: "If we'd kept a few more clean sheets we'd be up there. I don't think Chelsea are that special, they're just consistent and we're annoyingly inconsistent.

"We've closed the gap, but I still see Chelsea getting over the line by the odd two or three points."

He went on to discuss David Silva, his favourite City player, saying: "I find it incredible that he's at our club, he's just so low-key, doesn't do interviews. He's an old-school footballer. He's not fouled a lot because you can't get near him.

"He's a wizard, I love him."

When asked by Chapman whether he wanted City to win the Premier League or Champions League more, Gallagher said: "I'd like to win the Premier League more. To win that over 38 games is something else.

"We keep getting these horrible draws [in the Champions League]. We'll get there in the end."

Noel Gallagher Picks His Fantasy Band Of Footballers

Flamboyance, arrogance, and outrageous talent - some famous footballers down the years have undoubtedly had a lot in common with rock stars.

But how would your favourite players fit into your dream band, where other qualities are needed?

Before his appearance on Sunday's Match of the Day 2, former Oasis lead guitarist and famous Manchester City fan Noel Gallagher chooses his fantasy line-up.

"A lot of footballers these days are squares - to get in my band you need some charisma," Gallagher told BBC Sport.

Eric Cantona and Roy Keane do not make the cut, for various reasons, but George Best is one Manchester United hero who does.

He is joined by Zinedine Zidane (lead guitar), Patrick Vieira (bass guitar) and Mario Balotelli (drums) in an eclectic line-up that Gallagher says he would love to manage.

You can see Gallagher on MOTD2 at 22:30 GMT on BBC One and the BBC Sport website (in the UK). His new solo album Chasing Yesterday is released on 2 March.

Lead guitar - Zinedine Zidane

Noel: The lead guitarist has got to be a wizard and that wizard has got to be Zinedine Zidane.

He would give the band a bit of French flair and, as a player, he was an absolute genius.

Watching him play was like watching a conductor of a symphony and, if push comes to shove, he might be my favourite ever player.

I went to the 2006 World Cup final and people remember his red card, but what they don't remember is the penalty he scored in that game.

He chipped the keeper and it went in off the bar - now that takes some courage.
I was also there when he scored a penalty to beat England at Euro 2004.

There is footage showing where, just before he runs up to take it, he vomits on the penalty spot. Unbelievable.

He was either hungover or he had a bad prawn at half-time, but I can respect him puking up then lashing the ball into the bottom corner.

All that and he smoked 20 cigs a day. He was rock 'n' roll to the core, man.

Bass guitar - Patrick Vieira

Noel: The bass player has got to be solid and reliable - an immovable rock.
I would have Patrick Vieira, because he would have the rhythm as well.

I thought Vieira's old rival Roy Keane was one of the great Premier League players but he is just turning into a major pain now.

Do you reckon he ever laughs out loud? I reckon if he ever belly laughed at anything then he would have to check himself into rehab.

Keane was a great player and what United are missing now, that's for sure. Someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck and drive them on.

But I wouldn't want him in my band - he's not jolly enough. Music is supposed to be fun and you cannot have a miserable git in your band. Oh no, no way.

These characters have got to gel offstage, the same as a football team needs spirit in the dressing room.

And you could not go on tour with Roy Keane. No way would you get on the same bus.

Both of us could not be in the same band. It would be me or him. I'd have to leave.

Drums - Mario Balotelli

Noel: You have got to have a headcase on the drums and Mario could also join in with a rap every now and again.

He's like a modern-day rock star anyway.

Is he the nearest thing we have got to the Liam Gallagher of the Premier League? Oh, for sure.

He's a little bit crazy, a little bit unreliable and a little bit flamboyant. You never know what his hair cut is going to be doing from one day to the next.

Plus he enjoys his social media and is clearly very bad at writing songs - put all of that together and he could be Liam's double.

Mario is a great character but when he played for City, you could never really hang your hat on him and expect to change games for you.

He was more likely to score the third and fourth goals in a 5-0 win. One off his shoulder and the other where he backheels it past the keeper.

I loved him anyway, and I still do. I still have thoughts about him coming back to City at some point.

Vocals - George Best

Noel: In any band, you want a good-looking lad as the singer.

Georgie is my frontman because he was the greatest footballer of all time and he looked cool as well - he was football's first superstar.

I remember he used to have this glass house just outside of Manchester, which became a tourist attraction.

My mum and dad took us there one Sunday and there were loads of people standing on this country road looking over his fence at him watching TV.

Yes, he played for Manchester United but I could never hate him. Everyone loved him.
It was the same with Eric Cantona. All City fans loved him too, he was one of those you wished played for you.

I loved Eric because he was psychedelic. If he was an album, he would be Sgt. Pepper.
Attitude is a rare commodity in football or music and he was a character who had character. You barely get them in society any more, let alone football.

Personality matters as much as who they play for when it comes to the players I like - well, sort of.

When I stood back and admired Cantona, I appreciated his greatness.

But when he was on the pitch I loathed him. When he was scoring the winner against City I wanted to break both his legs.

Noel Gallagher On Oasis And Being The Greatest Dad In The World

This is the video I posted yesterday in French that has been translated by oasisnotizie, Noel Gallagher talks about Oasis and being 'the greatest dad in the world'.

"I could list 20 things that I miss about Oasis. I could list another 50 things that I don't miss, so I'm not as much as an arsehole to just dismiss that as 'you know, that was the past'. No, Oasis were f*cking brilliant and I was part of it and my part in it was brilliant and I loved it, but it's over, you know, that's it".

"We had no money, we had no jobs, we had nowhere to go, fucking nothing to do, except fucking finding a way to buy drugs and surviving. We went to football matches and chasing girls and somehow we all still remained fascinated with the world. And it was a better place to grow up, no phones, no cameras, no Internet, f*ck all. You just had you and whatever you were gonna make of your life it was down to you".

"(My private life) is f*cking great, is f*cking amazing. You'd love to be one of my kids. I take them to nice school, I buy them nice clothes, I'm a fucking great dad. Do you know why I know I am a great dad? Because I've got a plaque at home that says 'the greatest dad in the world' ...".

Noel Gallagher On A Night Out With Brother Liam And John Lydon

Noel Gallagher has said in an interview with The Sun that he's had a couple of nights out with former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon. And said him and Liam are similar and those two DO NOT get on.

He said “So I’m in LA and I’ve got John on one side and Liam on the other. John wouldn’t refer to Liam in person he’d say, ‘Ask your singer if he wears make- up?’ And I’d turn to Liam and go, ‘Liam, do you wear make-up?’. He’d then go, ‘F*** off, you prick.’"

He added“And so I’d turn back to John and say, ‘He told you to f*** off.’ To which John would say, ‘Go on, northerner. Ask your singer is he’s a f****** hardman.’ I’m, like, ‘Liam, are you a hardman?’ And it would carry on back and forth. It was probably one of the best nights out I’ve ever had.”

Noel Gallagher On Johnny Marr, Paul Weller, Bono And Neil Young

Noel Gallagher has been speaking to The Sun about his friendship with Johnny Marr, Paul Weller And Bono.

He said “The two of us like to f*****g talk for England,” he says. “When Johnny left our session, my engineer collapsed, exhausted from listening to us.I just can’t cope with you both talking and talking.’ I’d seen him the week before, too".

He Added “But I never get fazed with him or Paul Weller or any other hero of mine I now know. Even meeting Neil Young, who is a superhero to me, was disarming. Then you’ve got my mate Bono, who is such a brilliant comedian. And compassionate. He is probably the one rock star who puts his heart where his mouth is. These people have nothing to prove and are themselves.”

Noel Gallagher Says Liam Text Him Asking When His Duet With Robbie Williams Is Out

Noel Gallagher has recalled the last time he heard from brother Liam since they made up following their 2009 brawl.

The pair's backstage fight before a festival in France ended with Oasis splitting up.

"He sends me cheeky texts from time to time," Gallagher told The Sun. "He texted me the other night asking when my duet with Robbie Williams was coming out. He's all right."

Gallagher also spoke about his working class roots and the reasons he sends his children to private school. "My kids go to private school because I don't want them coming home talking like Ali G," he said. The working class are the new middle class – and there is a non-working class, the people on benefits, below.

"When I was growing up, working class people had pride, were smart, dressed well and had joy and passion for culture. I look at all those people on Benefits Street and think there is nothing to them, The government has de-educated people."

Noel Gallagher was announced as one of the headliners for T In The Park Festival yesterday. The singer, who releases his new album 'Chasing Yesterday' on March 2, has previously criticised the state of the current British music scene because of its lack of working class musicians.

"Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian, that's 10 years ago now and shame on those two bands for a start because they didn't inspire anybody else. The working classes have not got a voice any more, there doesn't seem to be a noise coming from the council estates, you know what I mean?" Gallagher said.

Noel Gallagher Says His Drug-Fuelled Memories Of Oasis Are Hazy

Noel Gallagher has made a "conscious decision to enjoy" his career because his drug-fuelled memories of his time in Oasis are so hazy.

The 47-year-old rocker is gearing up for the release of his new album 'Chasing Yesterday' and is eager to make sure he is able to recall everything he experiences from this part of his life because he has such hazy memories of his drug-fuelled time in Britpop band Oasis.

He explained: "I want to enjoy this because it's a moment in my life that I will never get back. With 'Definitely Maybe', I didn't know what the f**k was going on. Now I'm older and not f***ing high all the time, I've made a conscious decision to enjoy and remember it. But it's different now. I work better when I'm in charge. I think my records prove that."

As well as his maturing attitude, the 'Wonderwall' hitmaker - who has 15-year-old daughter Anaïs, as well as sons Donovan, seven, and Sonny, four - said he has taken more care with his new record than he did with previous albums, and has described it as "a brilliant TV series".

He told The Sun newspaper: "The last one [album, 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds'] wasn't lacking anything, but the difference is the last one was like an expensive film while this is a brilliant TV series. And TV is better than film, so they tell me.

"Initially you've got to make records for yourself and be confident your stuff has got you this far. You fall on instincts. So I don't really worry about if the saxophone is going to freak anybody.

"There is more quality control with what I do now I'm solo."
