Noel Gallagher On Alex Turner, James Blunt, Ed Sheeran, Jessie J And More

Noel Gallagher believes today’s rock bands are so dull that he would “rather drink petrol” than listen to an interview with Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner.

The 47-year-old singer claimed there are no real characters left in music because of the power held by the big record labels.

In an exclusive interview with the Standard, the former Oasis guitarist said: “There is a lot of shit pop music these days that’s just devouring everything at the minute. I’m hoping that will come to an end.

“There doesn’t seem to be any characters any more. When you have proper characters, the music sort of becomes secondary — it looks after itself. Look at bands like The Smiths and The Jam — all great characters.

“I would rather drink petrol straight from the nozzle at a garage than listen to an interview with Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys. Wouldn’t you? Alternative thinking is on its way out. They just don’t make for great copy.

“Is it any coincidence that all the indie labels got bought up by the major labels and things have started to get boring?” Gallagher spoke as he was announced as the first headliner for this year’s Calling Festival, on Clapham Common on July 4.

He believes the dullness has spilled into the Brit Awards, adding: “I remember the Brits in 1994 — we were all shit-faced on drugs. The new names like James Blunt, Ed Sheeran and Jessie J — they defer to the [record] labels. The bands that I grew up with had a healthy dose of indifference and contempt towards their labels. That has gone.” Gallagher may be a famous Mancunian, but insists he will never leave London, where he has lived for more than 20 years: “I can’t see myself ever leaving. It is the greatest city in the world. It is the capital of Europe. I’ve been to them all, but there’s something quite special about London in the summertime — the social life, the culture, the nightlife.

“I’d never go into politics, but if I was mayor I’d have to sort out the transport system. I can’t drive and I can’t be arsed sitting in traffic jams in a taxi, so I get the Tube everywhere.

“But when you go around the world, most cities have got state-of-the-art underground and subway systems — we are bumbling around on a post-war system that’s falling apart. I think the people deserve better.”

Gallagher, who lives in Little Venice with wife Sara MacDonald and their sons Donovan, seven, and Sonny, four, says he has no problems adjusting from being a rock musician to being a father: “I’m not a boring dad — I’m a rock star! But you have to adjust.

“My two young boys are not remotely interested in what I do. I could have just come off the stage at the Hollywood Bowl, and they’ll just give me a light sabre and say, ‘Right dad, we’re having it in the back garden now!’”

The singer is due to release his second solo album, Chasing Yesterday, next month and is playing at The Dome in Tufnell Park tonight. Tickets for Calling Festival go on sale on Friday at 9am.

Noel Gallagher Slams Justin Bieber

Noel Gallagher thinks Justin Bieber is ''not cool'' for making his fans wait two hours to watch him perform.

The British rocker blasted the 19-year-old popstar for being late on stage at The O2 arena in London on Monday (04.03.13), which forced thousands of disappointed young fans to leave the gig early.

Performing at Russell Brand's star-studded event 'Give It Up For Comic Relief' at Wembley Arena on Wednesday night (06.03.13), he quipped: ''I would have been relieved if I was one of his fans.''

But the father-of-three, who is married to Sarah McDonald, admitted he could understand why so many parents were upset, adding: ''I would be [disappointed] because kids are crying. I don't really know a great deal about him. I don't have an opinion on him. But it's not cool.''

Despite slamming the 'Beauty And A Beat' singer for his attitude, Noel revealed he would like to take an extended break from the industry like David Bowie, who recently returned after a decade away from the spotlight.

He said: ''I could easily see myself taking 10 years away from music like Bowie. I'd do it this time if the missus would let me.

''[I'd do] nothing. I'd do absolutely nothing. Writing is my hobby and I'm lucky enough that I managed to get a career out of it. I don't have any hobbies. Drinking tea's a hobby, and smoking. That's what I'm good at. I would do nothing. I'm brilliant at doing nothing.''

The proceeds from the event, which also featured performances from Emeli Sandi, Kasabian, Jessie J, Jimmy Carr, Jack Whitehall, Frankie Boyle, Eddie Izzard and John Bishop, all went to Comic Relief.

Host Russell, who previously battled addiction, admitted the charity, which strives to end poverty, is close to his heart, saying: ''This is an important issue today. Those with drug problems and alcoholism, they need to get clean. We're raising money for that here with Give It Up for Comic Relief.''

Tom Odell Slams Liam Gallagher

It’s Odell, not Adele. The names of the 2008 Critics’ Choice Brit Award winner and this year’s recipient aren’t spelled the same, but the 22 year-old from Chichester doesn’t mind the comparison.

‘I wouldn’t mind being the male Adele,’ Tom Odell says, opening a beer. ‘She came along and people were like, “Damn, we haven’t heard anyone this real for years.”’

We’re on a bar-room sofa, talking about the award he’ll pick up on Wednesday, the only Brit that’s announced in advance. Odell won it on the strength of six or seven plangent, soaring piano songs. Some are calling him a one-man Coldplay.

The thing is, no man has ever won a Critics’ Choice Award: the previous five went to Emeli Sandé, Jessie J, Ellie Goulding, Florence Welch and Adele.

‘Women have ruled the world for the past five years,’ Odell says. ‘The dominant male is history. Could you see a male Lady Gaga? The closest we’ve got is Justin Bieber, who’d be locked up if he tried the stuff Gaga gets away with. Women are the only rock stars now. Adele is brutally honest. I want to be like her.’

Brutally honest is one way of describing the middle-finger gesture Adele gave while receiving her last Brit – but everyone loves an outspoken star, I say. She’s taken over from Liam Gallagher.

‘But Liam Gallagher was full of ****.’ Odell says. He winces.

‘You won’t print that, will you? I can’t make enemies like that just yet.’ There’s a pregnant pause as I weigh up the pros and cons.

‘The point is, Adele is not full of ****,’ Odell continues. ‘I don’t think there’s much room for the drunken, misogynistic male in music any more.

'Although I think we’re opening a can of worms here. I said rock ’n’ roll was dead the other day and people got very angry…’

Rock ’n’ roll is dead, of course. Its age is past, just like the jazz age and the music hall age before that.

If you want to reach kids enduring 24-hour peer-group surveillance, it’s no longer enough to pick up a guitar and look cool. You need to go uncool. You need to go piano.
