Liam Gallagher Has Ditched Oasis’ Sound In Favour Of Acoustic Ballads

The singer is channelling hero John Lennon for his first music since disbanding Beady Eye in 2014.

It promises to be an emotional album that could take on fellow strummer Ed Sheeran in the charts next summer.

Liam, 44, spilled: “It’s a pretty Working Class Hero kinda thing – Lennony vibe, you know what I mean. It’s like acoustic.

“Then there’s a couple of rock and roll tunes on there, but it’s not Oasis man.

“It’s not f***ing stadium rock, you know what I mean?”

Yes, Liam, I think we get the gist.

Liam has made no secret of the fact he would rather be in a band and openly admits he “can’t be a***d” to pen his own tracks.

He said: “I’m quite happy being the f***ing cool bastard. I’m not a***d about writing songs – you do it because you have to.”

Liam has previous acoustic form, having written Oasis singles Songbird and I’m Outta Time.

But at no point did he and brother Noel ever attempt to sit together and collaborate.

He explained: “Noel was the songwriter of the band and I was the singer. I didn’t wanna be a songwriter. We can’t even f***ing speak together; imagine writing a f***ing song together.”

Despite being a reluctant songwriter, Liam is creating the LP himself and is only working with a couple of unknown musicians to help him with certain parts.

We can’t wait to hear the results. Sounds like Ed Sheeran might want to check the 2017 release schedule before dropping his third album too.

Liam Gallagher Backs #IAMWHOLE Campaign On World Mental Health Day

Liam Gallagher has backed a mental health awareness campaign to mark World Mental Health Day 2016, which takes place today (Monday, October 10).

The #IAMWHOLE campaign was launched with help from Jordan Stephens of Rizzle Kicks, who has recorded the song 'Whole' (scroll below to watch video) for the NHS-backed anti-stigma campaign. The campaign, a partnership with youth charity YMCA, hopes to raise awareness of mental health issues suffered by young people.

Celebrities such as James Corden and Ed Sheeran have backed the cause so far, sharing photos of their hand with a circle drawn on it. Now Oasis frontman Gallagher is the latest to join the campaign.

Liam Gallagher recently "held the olive branch out" to brother Noel Gallagher, saying that he wants to repair their relationship for the sake of their mother.

Liam told The Sunday Times: "Obviously [our mum would] like us to be chatting, sit around the table at Christmas. But it’s a stupid standoff, and we should know better, as we have kids. It would be nice for me and [Noel] to get back together as brothers. But it’s good, the standoff. I’m enjoying it. I ain’t backing down. He ain’t backing down."

"At least people are still talking about it. They’re obsessed," he added. "There’s no harm in it. He says shit about me. I say shit about him. I have held the olive branch out, and there has been nothing, so there you go. Potato it is, mate."

Liam Gallagher Teams Up With Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid To Boost Solo Relaunch

Liam Gallagher has reportedly teamed up with Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid to work on his music comeback.

The former Oasis frontman hasn't produced new music since the split of his band Beady Eye in 2014, and he had previously ruled out the possibility of a solo record.

The rocker has now changed his mind and has enlisted the help of Johnny from Snow Patrol, who Liam had previously branded "snore patrol" on social media, according to Britain's The Sun newspaper,

"It's all set to kick off with Liam, but this time it's about the music," a source said. "He's actually been rather savvy, getting on board some established and well-respected writers, like Johnny, despite his negative views on Snow Patrol previously.

"Liam still has the support of the hardcore Oasis following who will be keen to buy his records... Whether or not he can still attract other music lovers will be down to his new material."

Johnny, who is dating U.S. actress Courteney Cox, has previously written songs with Ed Sheeran and Harry Styles, for his first solo material outside of One Direction.

Liam, who is also reportedly working with The Raconteurs star Brendan Benson, wrote the disparaging tweet against Snow Patrol in 2012 when it was announced they were going on tour with his brother Noel's band the High Flying Birds.

He wrote, "Snore Patrol Noel Gallaghers high flying smurfs - who said rock n roll is dead. LG (sic)."

Liam, 43, had denied working on a solo album on Twitter earlier this year (16) and reportedly told a fan he had retired from the music industry. His brother Noel had been campaigning for Liam to go solo.

Ellie Goulding On Noel Gallagher's Criticism Of Her

Ellie Goulding has revealed that Noel Gallagher actually likes her music, despite what he said in a recent interview.

In a recent interview, the former Oasis frontman said: “Does anybody give a fuck about what any of these current pop stars are up to? Who gives a shit what Ellie Goulding is up to? Really? It blows my fucking mind.”

Now, in an interview with The Guardian, Ellie Goulding has said that at a Brit Awards a couple of years ago, Noel Gallagher told her: ‘I really fuckin’ love your music, but don’t fuckin’ tell anyone.’

So whilst Gallagher’s rants may be hilarious in substance, his adoration for pop music seems to go unnoticed at times. Or at the very least, unmentioned. Goulding continued, “So he’s lying. He does like my music. He told me himself. I might seem boring to some people, but first of all I can fight really well – I mean, I could probably take you right now – and if the epitome of supposed rock’n’roll is playing guitar, then I do play guitar. And I play guitar very fucking well. So there."

It’s not the first time Noel Gallagher’s subjects have, rightfully so, responded to his criticism. Ed Sheeran having been criticised by Noel Gallagher offered him two VIP tickets.

Jake Bugg: 'Noel Gallagher's Last Album Is Pretty Crap'

Jake Bugg has hit back at Noel Gallagher after he was criticised for using co-writers on his first two albums.

Bugg, who returns with his self-penned third album 'On My One' later this year, was dismissed by Gallagher last year who said he was "heart broken" to discover that the young artist had worked with other people to write his songs.

However, in a new interview with NME, Bugg breezed past the comments and aimed his own criticisms at Gallagher's 'Chasing Yesterday', which was released last year.

"Noel's last album is pretty crap though, innit?" Bugg says. "I'm not upset about it because it's just Noel – he'll slag off Ed Sheeran and then be at a party with him the next week. It's just the way he is."

Elsewhere in the interview, Bugg reveals that his rumoured collaboration with Beastie Boys' Mike D didn't make his new album because he failed to get a finished version from him. "He was doing a track of mine. But I still haven't bloody got it back. Do you know what it's called? 'Waiting'. Can you believe that? It's like fucking taking the piss."

Read the full interview and see the brand-new photoshoot in the all-new free NME, available nationwide on March 4 and on NME.com.

Noel Gallagher, Bono, Coldplay, Damon Albarn And More To Form A Supergroup At The Brits

Paying a fitting homage to David Bowie is no easy task, but the Brit Awards are trying their hardest.

I can reveal bosses are putting together an A-list supergroup in a bid to lay on the ultimate tribute at next month’s bash.

The band, which will hopefully include former Britpop foes Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn, plus Bono, will perform alongside iconic British acts Coldplay and Adele.

Organisers are even considering asking ITV to extend the show by 30 minutes to give the spectacular the time it deserves.

Yesterday a music insider revealed: “A few artists approached the Brits to ask if they could be involved in the David Bowie tribute as they want to make sure it is done properly.

“He was a British icon and they want to provide a credible farewell which can honour that.

“The band will be full of musicians who grew up with Bowie and were inspired by him, meaning artists like Noel, Damon and Bono.

“It is unlikely to involve young acts such as Sam Smith or Ed Sheeran, but there will be a few artists who are already singing on the night who will be asked if they want to take part too.

“The organisers are putting everything into it. If they get it right, it will be epic.”

Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds At The Orpheum Theatre

On Wednesday night, a guy in the Orpheum Theatre audience yelled out, “Where’s Liam?”

After the question was greeted with loud boos, Noel Gallagher, the former Oasis
guitarist/singer/songwriter playfully asked from the stage, “Who’s Ian?” and then said, “I’m not your brother” (referring to the band once led by his sibling Liam).

Before the haunting mid-tempo rocker “In the Heat of the Moment,” Gallagher turned sardonic: “The last time I was in this building was to see Marilyn Manson with my brother – quite an (expletive) evening, as you can imagine. This is my least favorite song off the new album.”

It may be his least favorite, but that doesn’t hold true for fans in his native England, where the song narrowly missed topping the indie singles chart.

“Heat of the Moment” is the second track on Gallagher’s second album, “Chasing Yesterday.”

Released earlier this year, the album debuted at No. 1 in the U.K. Sonically adventurous, the collection strikes a compelling balance between majestic rock and psychedelia, with more prodigious brass accents and guest guitar work by Johnny Marr.

Back in the mid-1990s, when Oasis had a prosperous run and battled Blur for the so-called Britpop crown, Noel Gallagher routinely made headlines abroad for his frequently provocative opinions. The same holds true decades later. Recent quotes about Ed Sheeran’s success, the shifting of One Direction and the possibility of an Oasis reunion have all made the music and tabloid press.
Performing a sold out show in Los Angeles with High Flying Birds, Gallagher delivered an invigorating 90-minute set that was split between tracks from his solo albums and a handful of Oasis cuts.

The Mancunian musician and his four-piece group (plus a three-man horn section) took the stage to a mellow remix of “If I Had a Gun.”

They launched the 20-song set in raucous fashion with “Do the Damage,” a sax-driven Stooges-meets-Sonics rave-up originally earmarked for “Chasing Yesterday.” The dramatic “Everybody’s on the Run,” containing a swelling keyboard crescendo by the Birds’ secret weapon, Mikey Rowe, was mesmerizing. He proved his mettle again on the rollicking “AKA … What a Life.”

Images of old family photos flashed on the backdrop for Oasis B-side “Fade Away.” Gallagher, playing acoustic guitar, recast the 1994 original’s raucousness into slower folk/rock territory and it worked well.

Lead guitarist Tim Smith unleashed some feedback and then the band locked into a maelstrom of careening sounds during “Lock All the Doors” that packed quite a wallop. The same held true for the catchy stomper “You Know We Can’t Go Back.”

A more subdued, reworked version of Oasis hit “Champagne Supernova” prompted fans to clap along. Gallagher gently admonished them, “Don’t! My kids always do that.” It was still electrifying as people hoisted beers in the air, several males sang along loudly, arm in arm, like they were at a soccer match and others took the chorus to heart by lighting up.

Elsewhere, the ominous and danceable standout “Ballad of the Mighty I” saw Gallagher dominate with a rare guitar solo. Like other tracks that run past the five-minute mark on his albums, it never became tiresome live.

Sinewy ’70s-styled groove rocker “The Mexican” really gave the horns a chance to shine, as did a ruminative “The Masterplan.”

More excellent Oasis nuggets included the quick, blaring “Digsy’s Dinner” (Noel handled Liam’s sneering original vocal just fine) and soaring finale “Don’t Look Back in Anger.”

Noel Gallagher Would Be Interested In Writing The Theme To A James Bond Film

Noel Gallagher has said he would be interested in writing the theme to a Bond film, but he does not expect to get the job as he is not well known enough in America.

Gallagher made his big screen ambition known in a new interview with German publication N-TV, telling Ingo Scheel that he would write a song for the long running 007 series "in a heartbeat".

"I would do it if I was asked. I would do it in a heartbeat," he said. "And I could do it and it would be great, but I'm not a star and for that you have to be a big star. You have to be someone in America."

Sam Smith is currently the favourite to follow Adele's Skyfall theme in the next Bond film. Ed Sheeran, Lorde and Lana Del Rey have also been mooted for the role. Spectre is set for release on November 7.

Gallagher also touched on the subject of being branded "too old for radio" in the same way Madonna has found herself in recent weeks. The High Flying Birds man confesses he will eventually suffer the same fate.

"This is gonna happen to me, too, they're not going to play my songs either. But that's cool, cause when my records come out they go to the top of the charts. Radio tries to tell you that you don't exist and yet the people are putting you to the top of the charts and therefore you do."

Gallagher recently concluded his UK arena tour, making a triumphant return to Manchester along the way. He was joined onstage at Manchester Arena by Johnny Marr and the pair performed 'Ballad Of The Mighty I' together during the encore.

Over the weekend, Gallagher posted a photo of himself holding a backstage pass to one of his brother Noel's concerts. Liam Gallagher posted the image to his Twitter account, followed by the caption: "Keeping it in the family...LG x"

Recently, Noel Gallagher said his younger sibling Liam should make a solo album and "put his balls on the line".

Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In London

Noel Gallagher pointed out that High Flying Birds is a band, not a solo project. No one really believed him.

While his kid brother’s band Beady Eye recently called it a day, Noel Gallagher’s just scored the fastest-selling album of the year so far. For the blokeish crowd at the O2, all must have seemed right with the world: a Gallagher on top of the charts ahead of sensitive boys Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran. He couldn’t resist an unsubtle reference to “my f***ing No  1 album”, then pointed out that Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds is a band, not a solo project. No one really believed him.

Yet there was no doubting the appeal of his post-Oasis songs. Everybody’s on the Run was the first anthem, while Lock All the Doors sounded like the Mancunians in their pomp.

Gallagher got excited by some argy-bargy down the front (“excellent behaviour”), although calm was soon restored by the mellow Riverman, featuring a saxophone solo of which Liam Gallagher would surely not approve. His big brother can get away with such experimental flourishes if he keeps writing stand-out tunes like the multi-layered Ballad of the Mighty I.

Perhaps Champagne Supernova would have benefited from Liam’s swagger, though Noel’s vocal was lifted by the Crouch End Festival Chorus.

During Don’t Look Back in Anger the audience sang along with the choir, while The Masterplan (Wonderwall’s b-side) made for a life-affirming finale. Oasis may be missed but Noel Gallagher offers the best of both worlds.

Noel Gallagher Calls Ed Sheeran "A F*cking Dude"

Noel Gallagher has said that Ed Sheeran is the only person to ever tell him they did not want to play a gig for Teenage Cancer Trust.

However, he added that most artists who did not want to take part in the charity event that he curated in 2013 initially said yes, but then got their agents to pull out of the gigs for them. Sheeran then agreed to take part the following year.

"You'll be there on the phone listening to someone blatantly lying to you. People say they can do it and then get their publicist to call up later and say, 'Oh we can't do it now, he thinks his cat's gonna have a stroke that particular afternoon'. You’re there, cajoling, with some cunt who plays a banjo about whether they're gonna turn up," said Gallagher in an interview which features in this week's issue of NME.

Discussing Sheeran, Gallagher commented: "The only one fucking person that has ever ever ever said 'I can't do it, I just got back from Australia I can’t be fucking arsed man, I'm fucked, but I will definitely do it next year' and I crossed his name off the list was Ed Sheeran! He actually called me back, you know what I mean, he said, 'Right I'm ready now, I wanna do it', and I thought, 'You know what, what a fucking dude'."

Noel Gallagher recently jumped to Ed Sheeran's defence after previously criticising the singer, stating "I won't hear a word said against him". Speaking to NME earlier this year, Gallagher remarked that he couldn't live in a world where Ed Sheeran headlines Wembley. But in an interview with Shortlist, the Oasis man revealed he'd had a change of heart about the pop star, mainly because Sheeran followed up on his word to appear at Gallagher's Teenage Cancer Trust concert at the Royal Albert Hall. "The only person that has ever said that and called me back the next year is Ed Sheeran. And I thought, 'You know what, you'll do for me man.'" He added: "He's a good lad and I won't have a word said against him."

Previously asked by NME if he'll be going to Sheeran's Wembley Stadium gigs, which Sheeran offered him tickets to, Gallagher said: "No no, they're for my daughter. She'll be going and drinking his champagne and possibly playing Top Trumps with James Blunt in the dressing room afterwards. I've given her a list of people to insult while she's there."

Noel Gallagher's new album 'Chasing Yesterday' is Number One in the Official Album Chart and has been confirmed as the fastest-selling album of 2015 so far. The album was released last week (March 2). Official Chart Company data reveals that the album had 89,000 combined sales, including 1,700 streams that now count toward the final chart position.

Gallagher is Number One ahead of Sam Smith's 'In The Lonely Hour' and Ed Sheeran's 'X' as well as the albums by George Ezra and Royal Blood.

Noel Gallagher Says Youth Culture Is Pretty Much Non-Existent

Noel Gallagher is almost as famous for his sharp tongue as he is his music career. Celebrities from Ed Sheeran to Alex Turner have found themselves in the singer’s firing line in recent weeks, but now US technology giant Apple and “middle-aged Americans” are the next victims.

“Apple came along and destroyed the f****** world. Youth culture is pretty much non-existent anymore,” he told Square Mile magazine.

“It’s this whole youth culture which is based on gadgets. It’s like Apple are driving youth culture, not youth culture driving the world.”

The 47-year-old continued: “Culture has stagnated because of conservative middle-aged Americans thinking, ‘F****** hey, wouldn’t it be cool if we could just f****** do this.’ And it’s like, no it wouldn’t be cool. No.”

The former Oasis singer – whose new band Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds was recently announced as a headliner for this year’s Latitude Festival – has 14-year-old daughter, Anais, from his first marriage to Meg Matthews.

Talking about her generation growing up in a “youth culture which is based on gadgets”, he said: “I’m not going to be some grumpy old fella telling her to put her phone down and saying, ‘Go listen to the Beatles.’ That’s her world. She doesn’t care.

He continued: “If somebody would have said to me when I was 14 about cassettes I would have said, ‘I don’t fucking care.’

“When we were growing up nobody would make you walk through an airport naked just to get on an aeroplane. And there was no 24-hour news, so they have to fill it up with bad shit. So we will always, always hark back to the old world and vinyl records and record shops and all that. 14-year-olds don’t want to hear that. Why would they care?”

Noel Gallagher Competing With Bono And Chris Martin To Write ‘Greatest Song Ever’

Rock star Noel Gallagher has revealed how he is vying with Bono and Chris Martin to write the greatest song of all time.

He opened up about his friendship with the Irish singer in a new Rolling Stone interview and disclosed how he has dubbed him, Father Bono.

The Oasis legend, who has just released his latest album, said he loves socialising with the U2 frontman.

He said: “Of all the people I know, he’s the most fun to hang out with, for sure. He’s a funny fucker, and he can drink.”

He also revealed he is in competition with the U2 frontman and Chris Martin to pen the ultimate song.

“I still think tomorrow might be the day that I write the greatest song of all time. It’s like going fishing.

“The guitar is your fishing rod, and if I’m not fishing for that song, Bono will get it, and if he’s not, Chris Martin will.

“And fuck those two guys, because they’ve got enough. We’re all fishing in the same river, and its cut throat”, he told the music bible.

He is amazed at the interest the U2 frontman takes in the making of his albums for his new band, the High Flying Birds.

“He’s got big ideas — for his band and for my music as well, which is astonishing. He’s always giving me titles for songs and albums. I call him Father Bono.”

The outspoken British singer said he liked U2’s new album but named Joshua Tree as one of his favourite albums of all time.

“I like (Songs of Innocence).

“Some of the greatest moments of my musical life have involved U2. Anybody who doesn’t like The Joshua Tree is a c****ucker, for a start.

“And anybody who went to see the Zoo TV tour and didn’t think it was the greatest of all time at that time is also an idiot.”

He doesn’t have the same praise for Ed Sheeran who walked off with the gong for album of the year at the Brit awards.

But he explained a recent comment, stating he didn’t want to live in a world where Ed Sheeran was headlining Wembley Stadium, had been said in good humour.

“He’s all right, Ed. He took it with good humour which is how it was meant.

“I was bemoaning the fact the biggest rock bands in England can’t even sell out Wembley, and yet pop music can. Modern pop music is bland nonsense. There isn’t even a word yet that’s capable of describing it. If it was a colour, it would be beige.”

He also likes superstar band One Direction but he doesn’t understand why they collaborate with songwriters for the hits on their albums.

“I know Harry Styles. We’ve hung out a couple of times. They’re lovely lads.

“But I’ve got to say, I have difficulties with people who don’t write their own songs, who’ve got a team of songwriters who work for your record label.”

Noel Gallagher On Touring, Oasis And Making His New Album With A Huge Hangover

Noel Gallagher on...

Johnny Marr: "He's a competent guitarist and I'm sure he has a bright future ahead of him."

Ed Sheeran: "He runs around all over the stage when he's playing, on podiums, everywhere. Far too much like hard work. But then he is very young."

U2: "I nearly melted Bono's face when I told him I have all the songs written for my albums before I go into the studio. U2 go in without a single note, and have meetings for six months before writing anything."

Paul Weller: "If Oasis ever got back together, he would put my windows in. It's highly unlikely anyway, but he's dead against it."

His hair: "While I've still got this haircut, I'll be making music. The barnet sort of dictates that I carry on."

Noel Gallagher On Ed Sheeran's Wembley Shows After-Party

Noel Gallagher spoke to Absolute Radio earlier this week and spoke about Ed Sheeran's after-party plans for his Wembley.

He said “The last show that Oasis did at Wembley was great but I can assure you the after-party, I didn’t leave Wembley until the next day.

“It was widely regarded as one of the best after-shows of all time.

“Ed Sheeran is young enough – he should be kicking the living daylights out of it. Maybe he’ll stay up with James Blunt playing bridge until 4pm in the afternoon. Play Top Trumps or something.”

Noel Gallagher On Alex Turner, James Blunt, Ed Sheeran, Jessie J And More

Noel Gallagher believes today’s rock bands are so dull that he would “rather drink petrol” than listen to an interview with Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner.

The 47-year-old singer claimed there are no real characters left in music because of the power held by the big record labels.

In an exclusive interview with the Standard, the former Oasis guitarist said: “There is a lot of shit pop music these days that’s just devouring everything at the minute. I’m hoping that will come to an end.

“There doesn’t seem to be any characters any more. When you have proper characters, the music sort of becomes secondary — it looks after itself. Look at bands like The Smiths and The Jam — all great characters.

“I would rather drink petrol straight from the nozzle at a garage than listen to an interview with Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys. Wouldn’t you? Alternative thinking is on its way out. They just don’t make for great copy.

“Is it any coincidence that all the indie labels got bought up by the major labels and things have started to get boring?” Gallagher spoke as he was announced as the first headliner for this year’s Calling Festival, on Clapham Common on July 4.

He believes the dullness has spilled into the Brit Awards, adding: “I remember the Brits in 1994 — we were all shit-faced on drugs. The new names like James Blunt, Ed Sheeran and Jessie J — they defer to the [record] labels. The bands that I grew up with had a healthy dose of indifference and contempt towards their labels. That has gone.” Gallagher may be a famous Mancunian, but insists he will never leave London, where he has lived for more than 20 years: “I can’t see myself ever leaving. It is the greatest city in the world. It is the capital of Europe. I’ve been to them all, but there’s something quite special about London in the summertime — the social life, the culture, the nightlife.

“I’d never go into politics, but if I was mayor I’d have to sort out the transport system. I can’t drive and I can’t be arsed sitting in traffic jams in a taxi, so I get the Tube everywhere.

“But when you go around the world, most cities have got state-of-the-art underground and subway systems — we are bumbling around on a post-war system that’s falling apart. I think the people deserve better.”

Gallagher, who lives in Little Venice with wife Sara MacDonald and their sons Donovan, seven, and Sonny, four, says he has no problems adjusting from being a rock musician to being a father: “I’m not a boring dad — I’m a rock star! But you have to adjust.

“My two young boys are not remotely interested in what I do. I could have just come off the stage at the Hollywood Bowl, and they’ll just give me a light sabre and say, ‘Right dad, we’re having it in the back garden now!’”

The singer is due to release his second solo album, Chasing Yesterday, next month and is playing at The Dome in Tufnell Park tonight. Tickets for Calling Festival go on sale on Friday at 9am.
