Absolute Radio 90s Reveals Oasis As The Greatest Band Of The 1990’s

The UK’s only 90s radio station Absolute Radio 90s has enlisted the help of its listeners to find the best song, album and year of the decade and with more than 50,000 votes cast, Oasis have been officially crowned number one.

Liam and Noel topped the polls, scooping title of best album and best song. Their second album What’s the Story (Morning Glory) beat Nirvana, Blur and REM to take the top spot, while Don’t Look Back in Anger pipped Common People, Bittersweet Symphony and Creep to win best track.

Absolute Radio’s Breakfast Show host Christian O’Connell said “Absolute Radio 90s listeners have spoken and Oasis have won the lot. Surely they have to get back together now?”

By voting for their favourites across different categories, listeners also chose 1996 as the definitive year of the decade - a very memorable year for the Oasis boys.

1996 was the year that 2.5 million people fought over 250,000 tickets for two Oasis shows at Knebworth, but for the Mancunians it's their two gigs at Maine Road - on April 27 and April 28 - that meant the most.

Not only did it see them raised from a theatre to a stadium band, but it also put them on stage in the football stadium that meant most to them - the home of the team they'd spent a lifetime supporting, Manchester City Football Club.

The infamous Maine Road gigs saw Liam re-join the band after one of many definitive arguments with brother Noel.

Noel Gallagher Dedicates Song To Frances Bean Cobain At A Gig In Los Angeles

Noel Gallagher has dedicated a song to Frances Bean Cobain at a gig last night at the Orpheum Theater in LA.

The daughter of the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain posted a picture of herself with the Oasis star earlier today (see above) with the caption 'What did you do tonight? @NoelGallagher thank you so much for hanging out&the song dedication & being all around rad!'.

It's unclear which song she had dedicated to her at the time of press but Cobain has said in the past she wants Noel to sing at her future wedding. A source speaking to The Daily Star said: "Oasis are the band Frances listened to while growing up. Her wedding day wish would be to have Noel to play an intimate acoustic set."

Cobain recently suprisingly revealed she prefers Oasis to Nirvana in an interview with Rolling Stone. “Sorry, promotional people, Universal,” she told the magazine with a grin. “I'm more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre [laughs]. The grunge scene is not what I'm interested in.

"But ‘Territorial Pissings’ [on Nevermind] is a fucking great song. And ‘Dumb’ [on In Utero] – I cry every time I hear that song. It's a stripped-down version of Kurt's perception of himself – of himself on drugs, off drugs, feeling inadequate to be titled the voice of a generation.”

Gallagher has a spectacular summer ahead of him including summer headline spots at Latitude Festival, Calling Festival and Summer In The City.

Record Store Day Unveils 2014 Releases: Oasis, Paul Weller, Nirvana, Jake Bugg, And More

Nirvana, Paul Weller and Oasis are among the artists who have contributed releases to Record Store Day 2014.

Paul Weller will release new material on a seven-inch, with the single limited to just 2,500 copies. Meanwhile, Nirvana's 'Pennyroyal Tea' will be released on the same format and Oasis' debut single 'Supersonic' will be re-released on 12-inch. A full list of all of this year's releases can be found on the official Record Store Day website.

David Bowie has outlined plans to release a seven-inch picture disc of 'Rock'N'Roll Suicide' in the UK. First released as a single in 1974, the new version is backed with 'Farewell Speech', recorded at the final Ziggy Stardust concert at London's Hammersmith Odeon in July, 1973.

Sex Pistols will release a limited-edition numbered seven-inch vinyl boxset which features alternate takes of 'Never Mind The Bollocks' tracks, plus two 1977 studio mixes of 'Belsen Was A Gas', including a previously unreleased demo version of the song.

'Live At Silver Platters, Seattle' is a four-track EP recorded by Jake Bugg at the singer-songwriter's January 20, 2014 instore show in the US city. It sees Bugg performing acoustic versions of tracks from his debut album and 2013 follow-up 'Shangri La', including breakthrough hit 'Lightning Bolt'.

Meanwhile, LCD Soundsystem's farewell concert, 'The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live At Madison Square Garden', will come out as a five-LP set for Record Store Day, with a wider vinyl and digital release set for May 19. The recording will be an unabridged version of the band's final gig, coming in at almost four hours long.

Suede will put out their single 'Let Go' on vinyl for the first time. The track was originally released as a limited-run CD single in Sweden in 1999. The seven-inch will feature 'Heroin' as a B-side.

Green Day have announced plans to release 18 demos, including a previously unreleased track from recording sessions from the 2012 '¡Uno!', '¡Dos!' and '¡Tré!' trilogy. The release will be available on coloured vinyl, CD and cassette.

Savages, Drenge and Summer Camp are among the bands set to appear on a charity album released in conjunction with Record Store Day UK and War Child. War Child will be the official charity for this year's event and, together with XFM, a limited-edition record has been produced featuring the best of DJ John Kennedy’s X-Posure Sessions.

Other big name artists contributing to this year's event include Damon Albarn, The Beach Boys, Chvrches, Edwyn Collins, Disclosure, Fleetwood Mac, Haim, Joy Division, Kings Of Leon, Metronomy, OutKast, Slipknot and The Rolling Stones, while Temples and Jagwar Ma have teamed up for a split seven-inch.

A number of mystery artists have contributed to the Secret 7" project in which seven tracks are pressed onto vinyl 100 times before artists are invited to design one-of-a-kind sleeves for the records. The names of the seven artists and musicians will be revealed this Monday (March 24).

Chuck D has been named as the official ambassador of Record Store Day 2014. Speaking about his appointment, he commented: "In this age where industry has threaded the music sound with virtual sight and story I am honoured to be called upon to be Record Store Day Ambassador of 2014. With the masses, neck bent into their smartphones, let all of us music lovers GPS our way into a reality that is the record store. It's worth a great try, let's do this."

Record Store Day was launched in the US seven years ago, coming to the UK a year later.

Oasis Dominate Vinyl Sales Chart

Official Charts Company release list of big sellers from the fallow years of vinyl.

Considering that figures for UK vinyl sales in 2013 have reached a reported 12 year high, it’s not altogether surprising that all but two of the 20 biggest selling records of the last two decades listed by the Official Charts Company and NME were released in the preceding 8 years.

Leading the way with first and second place are Oasis, whose What’s The Story Morning Glory? pips Definitely Maybe to the top spot, with Portishead’s Dummy taking the final podium place. Although The Beatles also figure strongly, the list is a pretty succinct document of the more adventurous end of the mid-90′s mainstream, dominated as it is by Brit pop (Oasis, Blur, Pulp) and its Mod and Madchester fore-runners (Paul Weller, Stone Roses), Bristolian trip hop (Massive Attack, Portishead) and The Prodigy.

While it is no surprise to see Radiohead’s The King Of Limbs sneak into the chart as the only LP released post-2001, the next most recent entrant is Travis, whose The Invisible Band peaks at a heady forth spot. (via NME)

Here’s the full list:

1. Oasis – (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? 1995)
2. Oasis – Definitely Maybe (1994)
3. Portishead – Dummy (1994)
4. Travis – The Invisible Band (2001)
5. Radiohead – The King Of Limbs (2011)
6. Leftfield – Leftism (1995)
7. The Beatles – Live At The BBC (1994)
8. Massive Atack vs. Mad Professor – Protection/No Protection (1995)
9. Queen – Made In Heaven (1995)
10. The Prodigy – Fat Of The Land (1997)
11. Paul Weller – Stanley Road (1995)
12. The Stone Roses – Second Coming (1994)
13. Blur – Parklife (1994)
14. Nirvana – MTV Unplugged In New York (1994)
15. The Prodigy – Music For The Jilted Generation (1994)
16. Neil Young – Harvest (1972)
17. Pulp – Different Class (1995)
18. Oasis – Be Here Now (1997)
19. DJ Shadow – Endtroducing (1999)
20. The Beatles – Anthology 1 (1995)

Noel Gallagher On Nirvana's Classic Album Nevermind

Noel Gallagher has been talking about Nirvana's 'Nevermind' album being twenty years old this month.

Nevermind became an instant music classic and launched Nirvana into rock superstardom.

Released in September 1991, Nevermind has since sold more than 30 million copies and has spent 253 weeks on the Billboard 100 chart.

Noel told the new edition of the NME "I remember when Nirvana came to Manchester - one of my regrets is that I never saw the gig. That album made me realise that you can do pop music with loud guitars. Sonically , 'Nevermind' and 'Definitely Maybe' are not that far apart. Really we were both writing melodic, Beatles-esque pop songs with loud guitars".
