Noel Gallagher: The 90s Was The End Of The Rock Star

Noel Gallagher has confessed to Xfm that the decade 'was not the beginning of something - it was the end of something'...

Noel Gallagher reckons that the 90s was the end of the rockstar era. Speaking to Xfm backstage at the iTunes Festival the singer admitted that he believes he and his Britpop contemporaries were the last of their kind.

"The 90s was not the beginning of something - it was the end of something. It was the end of the music business as we knew it. We were the last rock stars," he told Xfm's Dan O'Connell backstage.

He continued, "I will argue it to my death: there will never be another time like it where any given time in the top ten there were bands - who we all cared about - like Pulp and Blur and Oasis the Manic Street Preachers and they're selling shitloads of records and shaping youth culture - that's never going to happen again."

Noel was speaking before his headline set at the iTunes Festival at London's Roundhouse - where he also admitted to us that he is taking next year off - to avoid creating another lacklustre album like Be Here Now.

Liam Gallagher Wanted Alessandro Del Piero To Join Manchester City

New Sydney FC striker Alessandro Del Piero has revealed that he rejected pleas from Oasis founder and Manchester City fanatic Liam Gallagher to join the reigning Premier League champions.

Del Piero arrived in Sydney on Sunday to begin a two-year contract worth a reported $4 million with the Sky Blues. The Juventus and Italy legend's salary makes him the best paid footballer of any code to have played in Australia.

"Yeah, he (Gallagher) told me a lot of times about City, and the dream for him is me with a jersey of City," Del Piero told Fox Sports in an in-depth interview on Monday. "But, it’s a dream. Now the reality is me with a Sydney FC jersey."

Del Piero, who scored 314 goals in a club record 708 games with Juventus and won six Serie A titles, also turned down offers from Swiss club Sion FC and English Premier League giants Liverpool to sign on the dotted line with Sydney FC.

He has played 91 games for Italy and scored 27 goals, including the second of the Azzurri's two goals in their 2006 World Cup final win over Germany.

Liam Gallagher Shows Off His Sausage Dogs

Britain’s coolest dog show took Primrose Hill by storm as celebrities flooded the park to show off their pet pooches on Saturday (September 8).

Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher and his wife, All Saints singer Nicole Appleton, showed up with their matching sausage dogs, and struck rock star poses with man’s best friend atop the hill.

His brother Noel’s ex-wife, Meg Mathews, was also in attendance as patron of the event which was organised to raise awareness about the puppy farming industry.

Queen guitarist Brian May addressed the crowd with a speech about the horrors of puppy breeding centres where pets-to-be are kept in dark, cramped conditions, akin to battery farms.

Last year, an estimated, 900,000 dog owners bought their dogs from puppy farms without realising.

Other star visitors included comedian Ricky Gervais, clothing designer Henry Holland, Joanna Page of Gavin and Stacey fame and Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding, who was part of a celebrity panel of judges.

Pooches were judged in the categories of Prettiest Bitch, Campest Dog in London, Handsomest Dog and Coolest Dog.

No celebrity pets came out top dog but all the animals were made king of the hill for a day.

Ms Mathews, who was there with her 11-year-old daughter, Anais Gallagher, said: “It was an amazing day raising awareness for Pup Aid.

“I’m so delighted to be the patron and I was truly touched by the support from everyone – especially the pups on what was such a hot day!

“It was a great success and we hope to see everyone again next year!”

This year’s Pup Aid was the biggest competition yet as the event has moved from its south coast home, where it began three years ago, to north London, which is awash with celebrity dog lovers.

Liam Gallagher's 'Pretty Green' At Nolcha New York Fashion Week

Although London Fashion Week starts today, Pretty Green has already shown their Spring/Summer 13 collection at New York’s Nolcha fashion week. It’s the first time a collection has been previewed in New York and there was great excitement and interest in the range, as it went down a storm with the US audience.

Nolcha fashion week is a key date in the fashion calendar for designers and brands alike, as it’s an important way to showcase collections to the US market. Over the past five years Nolcha Fashion Week has established itself as a platform for promoting innovative fashion designers through runway shows and exhibition during New York Fashion Week.

As a young British brand it was fantastic to be a part of Nolcha and to get such an exceptional response, we’ll look forward to being involved again.

Noel Gallagher's Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere (Vol.2) Part Seventy Four

From Noel Gallagher's 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere' tour diary.

Now then comrades. Been a while I know. Been busy though innit? So . . . let's go back . . . way back . . . .

I think the last time we spoke I was in the biggest retirement home in the world, that being the isle of Jersey. The gig was great as I recall. I was playing with my old comrades Primal Scream. They were mega. They played some of their new album. Sounded great. As always.

You might be aware of a story about a deadly spider or summat? A load of fabricated nonsense. Great night all the same though.

The next gig was in that other retirement home Bournemouth. Strange gig. Lots of punch-ups!! What the fuck?? It's an odd little place. It does have palm trees though . . . which is nice.

Next up was my spiritual home of Liverpool. Great show. Magnificent crowd. They never let you down them scousers. While I'm at it let me say I'm writing this on the day that THE TRUTH has finally been exposed about the Hillsborough disaster. Respect to the family's of the 96 for exposing the lies of Thatcher's government. With my hand on my heart I salute you. xxxxxx

Now . . . after that came a magical Friday night in London. Not sure where it came from but the magic happened. Monumental show. Incredible crowd. Unbelievable. One of the best. Nice one.

After that was Cardiff. Pretty fucking good. No fighting . . . which is quite rare in Wales. They were in fine voice though. I'm losing track now . . . might have been Nottingham next? It was! Nothing sticks in my mind about the gig apart from having some fun with a lad in the crowd about a hat or summat? Not sure. I'm sure it was fun though.

So to last night at the Roundhouse in London. Part of the iTunes Festival. Easy. Loved it. It’s more like a TV show than a gig though. Not much in the way of atmosphere but pretty fucking good all the same. I now have 5 days off . . . which is good!

ONWARDS.

GD.

Another Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In Nottingham

There are some things that just work unquestionably well together – fish and chips, Morecambe and Wise, Marmite on toast and that other quintessential British duo the Gallagher Brothers.

When Oasis split three years ago nobody knew what to expect, little brother Liam had clearly got his eye on being the bigger, better success and letting everybody know about it, and yet Noel quietly confident since the split seems to be creeping out of his younger, louder brothers shadow. With his band Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds forming in the wake of Liam’s band, Beady Eye, it’s now Noel’s turn to let the songs do the talking.

Settling into our seats amongst a sea of Gallagher style sideburns, mums, dads and teenagers the crowd were a mixed bag to say the least. Graham Coxon opened for Noel, yes he of the famous Blur, the band that were famously at loggerheads with Oasis for the majority of the mid-90s. Graham standing awkwardly played a great opening set of spiky, energetic songs.

It would be fair to say that the hatchet is now well and truly buried and all is forgiven as Graham dedicated the song You and I to Mr Gallagher.

Then along came Noel after being in one of the biggest bands in the world, the man had more than a little to prove, yet he commanded the stage like the seasoned pro that he is.

Old songs and new songs worked seamlessly alongside one another throughout the carefully chosen set list. Beginning with Whatever B-side, (It's Good) To Be Free, Noel’s voice was surprisingly as strong and clear as on any of his recorded material.

From there he dived into the opening three songs of his solo album. Confident throughout and amusingly charming in only a way a Gallagher brother can be, at one point heckling a ‘a f****** fat skinhead’ in the crowd, the Crouch End ladies choir who joined him for backing vocals on stage may have blushed a little at such profanities but ever the gentleman, Noel did apologise to them after each curse.

The atmosphere was indescribable, as Noel led the crowd through singsongs of classics such as Don’t Look Back in Anger, and an acoustic Supersonic. Stand out songs and a personal favourite was the Oasis ballad Talk Tonight, whilst I was also pleasantly surprised to hear D’yer Wanna Be A Spaceman? which is rarely heard live. The newer solo stuff was unmistakably ‘Solo Noel’ with If I had a Gun and AKA…What A Life sounding fresh and original alongside the Oasis nostalgia.

This years NME Awards saw Noel Gallagher being declared a ‘Godlike Genius’, after this gig I surprisingly find myself agreeing with NME. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds showed great musicianship, and proclaimed Noel as a talented solo artist, and songwriter with equally impressive vocals. I don’t think anybody can write-off this Gallagher Brother quite yet, and with undoubtedly more to come, little brother Liam certainly has a hard act to follow.

Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In London

Fans of Noel Gallagher should be wary of shouting out requests during his gigs.

He told off one punter for gobbing off during his iTunes show with his band High Flying Birds in London’s Camden.

Between songs the fan shouted: “Digsy’s Diner!” – getting wrong the title of the Oasis track from Definitely Maybe.

Noel told the crowd: “Digsy’s Diner? What are we, in America or something? It’s dinner!”

Unsurprisingly, Noel didn’t perform the song but did run through Oasis numbers Don’t Look Back In Anger, Talk Tonight, Half The World Away and Supersonic.

Accompanied by north London choir the Crouch End Festival Chorus, he also belted out solo material Everybody’s On The Run and AKA... What A Life.

It was another cracking gig in the iTunes series of shows. Last night Pink played her first UK gig in ages and Labrinth headlines tonight.
