(What's The Story) Morning Glory? is the second album by the English rock band Oasis, released on October 2 1995. The album went straight to #1 in the UK, selling 347,000 copies in its first week. (What's the Story) Morning Glory? spawned four hit singles in the UK, two of which were #1s. It sold over 19 million copies worldwide, including over 4.3 million copies in the UK, 14x platinum, and is currently the third biggest-selling album in UK chart history. Morning Glory has gone 4x platinum in the United States In addition, the singles "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" went Gold in the United States.

The album, which was recorded in less than two weeks, contains arguably the band's two most famous songs, "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back in Anger", along with "Champagne Supernova" and their first UK #1 single, "Some Might Say".

In 1997 Morning Glory was named the 5th greatest album of all time in a 'Music of the Millennium' poll conducted by HMV, Channel 4, The Guardian and Classic FM. In 1998 Q magazine readers placed it at number 8, and in 2000 it achieved the same position in Q's list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. The editors of Q magazine declared it the "album of the decade" in 1999. The readers of Q placed it seventh on the 2006 top 100 greatest albums of all time list. In 2003, the album was ranked number 376 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

History

The success of Morning Glory catapulted Oasis from being a successful Britpop band to being one of the biggest bands in Britain, with substantial international fame, and considerable press coverage in the mainstream and music press. The band played several massive open air concerts in the UK during 1996, which included two nights at Knebworth in front of a combined audience of 250,000 people (125,000 each night), with over 2.5 million applying to buy tickets.

10: "Morning Glory" – 5:03
11: Untitled (aka "The Swamp Song - Excerpt 2") – 0:41
12: "Champagne Supernova" – 7:27

Notes:

* Tracks 6 and 11 are officially untitled. In fact, the track listing bears no title whatsoever for these songs, merely a blank space.
* The excerpts from "The Swamp Song" are parts of the instrumental B-side to the "Wonderwall" single.
* The vinyl LP edition of the album features a bonus track, "Bonehead's Bank Holiday". This song appears as the 7th track on the album, immediately after the 43-second untitled track.
* "Step Out" had to be removed from the album at the last minute. The song, sung by Noel, was intended to have been the original track 8 (after "Some Might Say" and before "Cast No Shadow"), but was removed as the chorus was similar to the chorus of Stevie Wonder's 1965 track "Uptight (Everything's Alright)". Wonder's publishing company were alleged to have demanded a substantial amount of royalties from the album which Oasis weren't prepared to pay, so the track was removed, although not before the first promotional copies of the album had been released with "Step Out" included. The track was eventually released as a B-side on Oasis' 1996 single "Don't Look Back in Anger", with an amended song writing credit of 'Gallagher/Wonder/Cosby/May', and was included on the live album Familiar to Millions.

Miscellanea

"Hello" contains elements of Gary Glitter's "Hello Hello I'm Back Again" as Liam jokingly sings part of the song's chorus when the song begins to fade out.

On the cover of the album a man is seen brandishing what looks to be a vinyl record in its sleeve. This is in fact the master tape for the album. The man in question is Owen Morris, the producer. The photo was taken on Berwick Street in Soho, a London street well known for its independent record shops. The other man is BBC London's Sean Rowley.

The Shock Of The Lightning is a song by British rock band Oasis and is the fourth track from the band's seventh studio album Dig Out Your Soul. The song was released as the first single from the album on 29 September 2008. It received its first airplay on 15 August 2008 on multiple UK and Irish radio stations including the Ian Dempsey Breakfast show on Today FM in Ireland, BBC 6 Music by Shaun Keaveny, and by Chris Moyles on BBC Radio 1. Chris was joined by Noel Gallagher on the 15 August 2008.

Noel said of the song: "If 'The Shock of the Lightning' sounds instant and compelling to you, it’s because it was written dead fast. And recorded dead fast. 'The Shock of the Lightning' basically is the demo. And it has retained its energy. And there’s a lot to be said for that, I think. The first time you record something is always the best”. It was described by NME as "a massively improved version of 'It's Gettin' Better (Man!!)'" and featuring "love is a litany/a magical mystery" as the song's chorus.

The single is the first Oasis song to feature a remix on a studio release. The B-side is a remixed version of the album track "Falling Down" by The Chemical Brothers, who Noel has worked with in the past. However, a promo release of Oasis' cover of "Cum On Feel the Noize" contained the "Lynchmob Beats Mix" of "Champagne Supernova" by Brandon Lynch that was also re-released as a stand alone promo for Stop the Clocks. Consequently this is their first official CD single release that does contain a new track as a B-side.

On 30 July 2008, the official Oasis website posted a Dig Out Your Soul trailer which contained a 23 second clip of the intro to "The Shock of the Lightning" as well as a 20 second clip of the drum solo. On 15 August 2008, the song received it first airplay on the The Chris Moyles Show on BBC Radio 1 with Noel Gallagher present. Noel said of the song on Shaun Keaveny's Radio 6 show, "It's a driving, pumping, pop, rock 'n' roll masterpiece". In NME, the song was named as 'song of the week' and received a score of 9/10, despite being referred to as "only the fifth best song on Dig Out Your Soul".

"The Shock Of The Lightning" entered the UK Singles Chart at #3, becoming the band's first lead single since their debut, "Supersonic", to fail to reach #1 in their homeland. However the song reached #12 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart in the USA, making it their most successful single there since "Don't Go Away", which peaked on the chart at #5 in 1998. It also reached #93 on the Billboard Hot 100, their first song to chart on the Hot 100 since "Don't Look Back in Anger" in 1996.

Music video

The music video for the song (directed by Julian House and Julian Gibbs) debuted on the band's official site on 25 August at 17:30 (UK time) and was broadcast on Channel 4 at 23:40. The video depicts Liam singing and the occasional appearance of the rest of the band, intercut with stock footage related to the album's artwork. The opening shot of the video of silhouetted heads is a reference to the cover of the Rolling Stones compilation record Hot Rocks 1964-1971.

Liam Gallagher's Spokesperson Denies Reports Oasis Will Reform In 2016

A spokesperson for Liam Gallagher has denied tabloid reports that Oasis will reform in 2016.

The Daily Star reports that Liam and brother Noel are in "serious talks" to reform for a series of arena gigs alongside former bandmates Andy Bell and Gem Archer. It is the latest in a long line of Oasis reunion reports to emerge since the band split in 2009.

"Other bands have reunited and had a fantastic pay day so it makes sense for everyone involved," a source told the paper. "It has been discussed seriously – it’s only a matter of time. It is looking so certain it is worth betting on for next year."

However, approached for comment by NME a spokesperson for Liam Gallagher said that the rumours are "totally unfounded". A request for comment from Noel's camp has not received a reply at the time of writing.

Earlier this year Noel hinted at there still being tension between him and his brother. Gallagher exchanged words with a heckler at a gig in Cork. "Where's Liam?", shouted the fan, to which Noel replied, "For the benefit of everybody, there's some comedian here that's just said, 'Where's Liam?' Is he a local comedian?"

He continued: "Liam's at home looking at himself in the mirror."

Gallagher then turned his sights onto the heckler himself, adding: "Fortunately, he's still not as big of a cunt as you are. Imagine that, being a bigger cunt than our kid. Imagine that."

Video: #BoobProject (Noel Gallagher, Hozier, Florence Welch And More) - Boob Spelled Backwards Is Boob

This is just great.

Yesterday, we brought you the news that two megastars have teamed up in the name of charity, and now we have the video to show you.

Hozier and Noel Gallagher were joined by a host of other stars, including Florence Welch and Vance Joy, to contribute to “Boob Spelled Backwards is Boob” - a breast cancer charity single.

It's all part of the #BoobProject campaign and the man behind it, American-based Irish DJ Greg McQuaid, has been speaking to JOE about the remarkable story behind this fantastic gesture.

"The lyrics were written by 8-year-old Archer Nelson as a way of dealing with his mom’s breast cancer. I decided to ask all the musicians who visited the station in 2015 to help make the song a reality," he tells us.

"It's heartfelt, sobering but ultimately uplifting. All money raised from the sale of the song and donations will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, a charity that funds research all over the world."

Speaking about trying to convince Noel Gallagher to contribute, Greg revealed:

"Noel was funny because he came in to tape an interview with me. I brought my wife's acoustic guitar to work with me, had someone tune it up and I left it and a #BoobProject sign directly in front of him when we did our interview.

"Sure enough, the very first thing he said when he sat down was "what the f*ck is the #BoobProject?!" I started to explain the song and before I could finish the sentence he's like, "what do you want me to do?""

The single is set for release this Thursday, October 1.

Take a few minutes out to enjoy this cracking video and catchy tune, all for a great cause.

Noel Gallagher Teams Up With Hozier, Florence Welch, Spandau Ballet And More For Charity Single

Hozier has teamed up with Noel Gallagher for a charity single with a difference, thanks to a Dublin radio DJ.

Greg McQuaid, who hosts a popular breakfast show in San Francisco, convinced a host of celebs to lend their talents to raise money for a good cause.

Greg and his team at KFOG FM in California wrote a quirky song entitled Boob Spelt Backwards Is Boob' to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which funds research projects worldwide.

The title came from his co-host Mike Nelson's eight-year-old son.

The project began last January.

Every time a big name came through the studio, Irish Greg as he's known to listeners asked them to take part in the #Boob- project.

Despite having no melody or lyrics, the team aimed to have the song for sale by October to mark global breast cancer awareness month.

Florence And The Machine's Florence Welch was also keen to lend a hand.

Hozier and Gallagher contributed, as did 1980s legends Spandau Ballet.

"Getting Hozier was really huge. When you have one of the biggest artists on the planet involved, convincing others to contribute becomes a lot easier," Greg told the Herald.

"We recorded his part back in April. He didn't have time to come by the radio station so we recorded him at the Masonic where he was playing three sold-out shows.

"It was cute because his tour manager and road crew were all walking around backstage singing the chorus as we were trying to record it."

The song and video will be available on www.kfog.com/boobproject or it can be downloaded from iTunes. It is due to be released on Thursday.

Tabloid Alert: Oasis “Definitely Maybe” Reuniting For Gigs In 2016

The band is planning a comeback UK arena tour after a six-year break. Other big Manchester bands including the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays have made a fortune through comebacks.

Now the Gallagher brothers Noel, 48, and Liam, 43, plus bandmates Andy Bell and Gem Archer, are in “serious talks” to follow suit.

Our source said: “Other bands have reunited and had a fantastic pay day so it makes sense for everyone involved.

“It has been discussed seriously – it’s only a matter of time.

“It is looking so certain it is worth betting on for next year.”

Noel and Liam have made up following the arguments that led to the band’s split. In March, Liam revealed they had healed their rift after tweeting a picture of himself holding an Access All Areas pass for Noel’s gig with his band High Flying Birds.

They had reportedly settled their differences in January during a family wedding in Ireland.

The brothers famously split after a series of rows between them.

Noel quit the band in 2009 after cancelling a gig at Paris’ Rock On Seine festival just hours before they were due to play. He left Liam and formed his new band.

His brother went on to start Beady Eye with Gem, 48, and Andy, 51.

Noel Gallagher And David Beckham Enjoy A Night Out In New York

David Beckham and Noel Gallagher put aside their club allegiances to share a three-course meal with friends at plush pizza restaurant Lucali in New York this week.

Becks is currently over in the States, having delivered a passionate speech at the United Nations in the Big Apple on Thursday, urging world leaders to do more to help help disadvantaged children.

The former Manchester United midfielder posted a photo of him with his hand on the shoulder of the former Oasis lead guitarist, who is an impassioned Manchester City supporter, with the caption: 'Another great night at Lucali. Thanks to Mark and the girls'.

Appearing on an episode of The Graham Norton Show earlier this year, Beckham revealed he was a self-confessed fan of the Manchester rock band and agreed to appear in the next music video for Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.

'Obviously there's a big Manchester divide between United and City, but when I used to play for England I remember Noel being at one of the games and I went up to him and shook his hand, so of course I'll be in one of your videos,' he said on the chat show.

It is not known whether the pair have acted upon this revelation, but the former England captain would appear to at least be working on his budding friendship with Gallagher at the popular neighbourhood eatery.

Beckham looked in the mood to unwind after a busy week in which he gave a speech at the launch of Voices of Youth, a global community of youth bloggers giving young people the opportunity to learn about development issues.

Hear A School Choir Sing Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds 'The Girl With The X-Ray Eyes'

"It's been a great opportunity to have my songs reworked by people whose own work I am a huge fan of...I have found the whole thing hugely inspiring" - Noel Gallagher

'Where The City Meets The Sky: Chasing Yesterday: The Remixes’ is out today! Featuring selected album tracks reworked by the likes of Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve, Andrew Weatherall, Psychemagik, 3D from Massive Attack and more...

The coloured vinyl is only available via Noel's Store here.

Also available digitally here.

Noel asked David Holmes to remix 'The Girl With The X-Ray Eyes' and when he received it back he absolutely loved it... David organised a local school choir to re-sing the vocals. Many thanks to the The St Michael's School Project.

Listen here!

David Holmes explains how the track came about: "When I first heard 'The Girl With The X Ray Eyes' I immediately heard the influence of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' which made me think of another great version by the Langley School's Project...after listening to the lyrics on repeat for a few hours I thought they had a real picture book sensibility so I called my daughter's primary school choir. The kids rehearsed for 5 days and I stopped by and recorded it in their assembly hall."
