Noel Gallagher On Oasis' 'Be Here Now' Being 20 Years Old

Noel Gallagher has spoken to the current issue of Q about Oasis' third studio album 'Be Here Now' turning 20 years old this year.

He said "I remember going on holiday with Kate Moss, Johnny Depp and Mick Jagger and thinking 'I'll write this album.' it's insane writing a song on holiday. Producer (Owen Morris) came out and we did the demos but in hindsight Owen's as mad as I am. Then we take them back to London and Alan McGee announces that it's going to do 40 million. I'm like, 'honestly they'd better send me into space, because if I can sell 40 million albums by writing it on holiday in a pair of shorts, then I'm not of this world anymore.'

In the studio it was great and on the day it came out it was great. It was only when we got on tour that I was thinking, 'It doesn't fucking stand up.' When we did the reissue somebody said 'Why don't you do an edited version?". And I sat in a studio for a full week and the tapes didn't grab me at all. The only thing I could salvage was 'D'You Know What I Mean' But don't get me wrong I sign a shit load of those records every year". People are prepared to have stand-up rows with me in the street: 'I fucking love that album!' And I'm like, 'Mate, look, I wrote the fucking thing. I know how much effort I put into it. It wasn't that much'''.

Oasis At Knebworth: 20 Years Since Britpop's Biggest Gigs

Twenty years ago today, Oasis played the first of two concerts at Knebworth in Hertfordshire, England.

They were the biggest gigs of their era. The crowning glory of Britpop. Incredibly, one in 20 Britons applied for tickets.

A quarter of a million eventually got to see Liam, Noel, Bonehead, Guigsy and Whitey as they confirmed their status as the most popular British band since The Beatles. (A status that was swiftly rescinded when the band released their overblown, coke-addled third album Be Here Now 12 months later.)

But, in that moment, it was hard to argue with Noel when he strode on stage and declared: "You're making history, you lot."

"I'll never forget the sheer scale of it," says Bonehead, AKA guitarist Paul Arthurs.

"We flew in from London by helicopter and sort of circled the site. It landed behind the stage but we were like: 'Let's just do a once round and take it all in.' I'll never forget it."

Not that conditions were completely idyllic. According to one report, singer Liam Gallagher was not too enamoured with the catering, screaming about the state of the sausages and flinging a handful of corn on the cob to the floor.

Bonehead also found it difficult to prepare, thanks to an inconsiderate support act.

"We stayed in these Winnebago, caravan things at the back of the stage," he tells BBC 6 Music.

"I remember thinking 'I'll just have a quick hour in bed before we go on', and the Prodigy came on. If you've ever tried to sleep 20ft from the stage when the Prodigy were on live? Forget that."

Sleep deprived or not, the band blew away the fans. "Hello, hello, hello. Let's go," said Liam, before launching into a gut-punching opening salvo of Columbia, Acquiesce and Supersonic.

Almost two hours later, they ended their set with a celebratory cover of The Beatles' I Am The Walrus, capped by a spectacular fireworks display.

But it was the ballads, tucked away in the second half of the set, that really brought the crowd together - 125,000 voices per night united for the choruses of Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger.

Despite the band's later reputation for attracting a less refined crowd, the atmosphere was overwhelmingly good natured. In between support acts, the audience engaged in mock fights with empty paper cups, while police recorded only one arrest.

Attended by Kate Moss, Chris Evans and Mick Hucknall (who set tongues wagging by bringing along soap star Martine McCutcheon), the shows made headline news - but the importance was not immediately apparent to the musicians.

"It's weird," says John Power, whose band Cast were one of the support acts. "Sometimes these things, because you're involved in it, and because you see the bands all the time... it felt like it was just another a stepping stone to where this movement, or all these bands were going.

"Oasis were massive obviously. But I think, now, looking back on it, I don't think it could have got any bigger than that."

Always the most analytical member of Oasis, Noel Gallagher realised sooner than most that the band had peaked.

"I remember sitting there, at Knebworth, in the backstage area, and someone saying, 'Well, what now?' And I was like, 'I couldn't tell ya,'" he later told Uncut magazine.

"And that was how I felt for a good couple of years afterwards. I really suffered. It's like, what do you do when you've done everything? You kind of sink into boredom. Kind of directionless."

Looking back, Power agrees: "I think maybe that is the time where maybe [Britpop] started to slowly come down a bit, like.

"That doesn't mean there wasn't great performances going on and great music being made - but you can only contain so much fizz in a can before you've got to pop it."

For fans, however, Knebworth is a fond memory (even if the queues for the toilets and food stalls remain a nightmare).

The gigs were even enough to rile Liam's arch-enemy Robbie Williams into booking three nights at Knebworth, before allegedly asking Oasis to support him in a letter accompanied by a pair of tap dancing shoes.

Not everyone was so bowled over, though.

Matthew Wright, writing in The Mirror, called the shows "as flat as stale champagne", prompting a foul-mouthed phone call from Noel, who told him: "That's the last time you have anything to do with my [expletive] band."

Meanwhile, Henry Lytton Cobbold, who owns the Knebworth estate, has an altogether more unique perspective on the weekend's events.

"Amusingly, Noel Gallagher on Sunday morning, decided he wanted a bath, so he came up to the back door of Knebworth House, rang the doorbell and asked if he could have a bath," he recalls.

"My dad, who was in the house at the time, showed him up to the Queen Elizabeth bathroom - and brought him a bottle of champagne.

"I've since read him describe that he was served champagne by liveried servants, but it was actually my dad!

"He then wrote in the Knebworth House guest book: 'Noel Gallagher (clean!)'

"As an historic house with an archivist and a museum, those things now become part of our collection.

"I just wish we'd kept the soap."

You can hear more about Oasis's landmark Knebworth gigs on Steve Lamacq's BBC 6 Music show from 16:00 BST on Wednesday. The programme will conclude with a broadcast of the concert, as originally heard on BBC Radio 1 in 1996.

Noel Gallagher Shares His Style Secrets And Rules For Living

I wish I was Italian. The people are passionate and Rome has an unbelievable history

I look good in Levi’s 511s, an Our Legacy Bomber Jacket and Golden Goose desert boots

I like Garrett Leight sunglasses with champagne-coloured frames. They make me look like Steve McQueen

When I need socks I buy hundreds of pairs from Ralph Lauren. For underpants I buy Calvin Klein, there’s no other make worth knowing about

I’ve got a Lanvin flower pin that I put on my jacket when I’m feeling psychedelic

Once a week I have a look on Mr Porter. But I’m old-school: I like to try on clothes before buying them, so I send a lot back

If you want to look like a Mancunian, the place to go is Oi Polloi in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Half my wardrobe is from there

As soon as I wake up I tune into Nick Grimshaw on Radio 1. He’s an old friend and my kids Anaïs, Donovan and Sonny love him

I can’t get through the day without Marlboro cigarettes and Yorkshire tea. I take mine strong with one sugar

I have a soft spot for Chateau d'Esclans Whispering Angel rosé champagne. It makes you sing like a whispering angel

When I’m on tour there’s got to be Monster Munch or the sound check isn’t happening. Pickled Onion, Flamin’ Hot, Roast Beef… you name it, I’ll eat it

I like women to wear high heels. I’ve got a big problem with Ugg boots. They’re so unattractive and give the impression that you don’t care

KATE MOSS is one of the lads. She will never go out of fashion. She’s the only woman who can throw something on as she leaves the house and in six months the entire world’s wearing the same

I’ve been most impressed by Madonna recently. When we met she held her hand out, I kissed it and she said, ‘Finally, we meet’

I’ve only ever read one novel, On the Road by Jack Kerouac. I decided that no other book would ever compare

I would omit most of 1997 from My Autobiography. The music I was writing was awful, I got married when I shouldn’t have, and I took a lot of drugs

I’ve been happy ever since I bumped into my wife Sara in Space in Ibiza. I never believed in love at first sight until that moment

My favourite hotel is Borgo Egnazia in Puglia. It’s got the best kids’ club, brilliant pools and delicious seafood pasta

Whenever I’m lying next to Sara I have the best night’s sleep. That doesn’t sound very rock star but it’s the truth.

Gallery: Noel Gallagher And Kate Moss Party With Celebrity Pals

Noel Gallagher looks like he lived up to the boozy reputation of Robert Burns by partying the night away in a Banffshire hotel.

The ex-Oasis star and his Scots wife Sara MacDonald joined pal Kate Moss and a host of other A-list celebrities to celebrate the 40th birthday of former supermodel Rose Ferguson with a Burns Supper in Craigellachie on Saturday.

And yesterday morning he appeared at the doors of Craigellachie Hotel clutching a pint – after guests managed to almost wipe out the hotel’s supply of whisky the night before.

Noel Gallagher Reveals He Got Drunk Recording Gogglebox

British rocker Noel Gallagher has revealed he got drunk before filming a fundraising comedy skit because his supermodel co-stars Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell were so late.

The former Oasis star predicted his modelling mates would be late and so he made sure he had plenty of good alcohol to sup while he waited - and he overindulged.

He admits he was so intoxicated when he arrived home after filming, he had no idea what his wife was talking about when she asked how the skit, filmed for last month's (Oct14) U.K. Stand Up To Cancer telethon, went.

Gallagher tells Absolute Radio, "I told the woman (producer), 'I guarantee you, Naomi Campbell will not be here before midnight... You're an idiot... You'll be lucky if Kate gets here before three in the morning!' I got there on time... (and) they both rock up at 10 o'clock, so by that time I'm already drunk. We were supposed to finish filming at 10 o'clock... We got out at quarter to two."

But he insists he had a great time with his pretty pals: "It was one of the best nights."

Celebrity Gogglebox: Sneak Peak Of Noel Gallagher watching Strictly Come Dancing

We could not be more excited about tonight's Celebrity Gogglebox - all in aid of Stand Up to Cancer - and this sneak peek of Noel Gallagher watching Strictly Come Dancing does not disappoint.

Noel - who's sharing a sofa with Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell - seems to warm to Mark Wright's Superman-themed routine... because he's done a similar one himself.

Except Noel wasn't doing it in a studio in Borehamwood - he was at Mick Jagger's house in Mustique. But Kate is there to bring him back to Earth, pointing out: "Not the paso doble though." We're also quite pleased to see that Noel is excellent at choosing snacks, as he has an open packet of pickled onion Monster Munch on the table.

Noel Gallagher Declines To Comment On 'Celebrity Gogglebox' Rumour

Noel Gallagher and Channel 4 have declined to comment on the rumour that he will be appearing on a charity episode of TV show Gogglebox this month.

The singer is touted to be appearing on a special edition of the programme, which shows various groups of people watching and commenting on topical TV shows from their sofas. Other rumoured participants on the charity programme include models Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.

When asked for confirmation of the appearance, however, Gallagher's team replied with a "no comment" on the matter. Channel 4 also declined to confirm or deny the rumour, stating that they are "unable to confirm any of the guests for Gogglebox: Celebrity Special yet".

It was reported by the Mail Online earlier today that the trio would be participating as part of Channel 4's Stand Up To Cancer event on October 17.

A source was stated as saying, "The sketch will help to raise money for charity and Kate is good friends with Noel and Naomi. When she knew she would have them by her side she did not hesitate to agree. Kate likes watching TV and is a fan of Googlebox, Bake Off and X Factor."

Meanwhile, Noel Gallagher has recently been in the studio working on the following-up to 2011's 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds'. According to 'Definitely Maybe' co-producer Mark Coyle, the forthcoming album has the spirit of that hugely successful Oasis record. "Noel's new album is fucking great," he said."It reminds me in some respects of the spirit of 'Definitely Maybe', because it’s so obviously exciting. That boy is from a different planet, and even the fans won't believe how utterly amazing it is."

Noel Gallagher, Kate Moss And Naomi Campbell To Appear On Gogglebox Later This Month

They are more used to spending their nights out on the tiles.

But prolific party-goer Kate Moss, fellow supermodel Naomi Campbell and rocker Noel Gallagher, 47, have agreed to stay in and watch TV for charity.

The trio are taking part in a special celebrity Gogglebox sketch to raise money for Channel 4’s Stand Up For Cancer fundraiser.

The hit reality TV series which launched in 2013 features a selection of families and couples watching television at home and commenting on the programmes they view together.

Only on October 17 those watching the TV programmes selected and sharing their opinions with the viewers at home will be a little more glamorous.

Moss normally refrains from commenting in public so for many viewers at home this will be the first time they will hear her speak.

The 40-year-old mother-of-one is said to have agreed to take part as she is a fan of the programme and enjoys watching Bake Off and X Factor and is also partial to the US sitcom Modern Family.

Miss Campbell, 44, who will next star in US TV drama Empire is glued to American show Housewives of Atlanta.

Last night a source said: ‘The sketch will help to raise money for charity and Kate is good friends with Noel and Naomi. When she knew she would have them by her side she did not hesitate to agree.

‘Kate likes watching TV and is a fan of Googlebox, Bake Off and X Factor.’

Moss and Campbell, who both grew up in London, have been firm friends since the 1990s as they flew around the world modelling and often found themselves working together.

Describing their enduing friendship which has spanned 25 years, and providing an indication of what viewers can expect when they tune in to watch the sketch, Campbell has said in the past: ‘What’s Kate like? Well, she’s honest, loyal and straightforward.

'There’s no bullshit. She’s not pretentious in any way. What you see is what you get. I love that about her. After all, we’re both from south London — I’m from Streatham, she’s from Croydon — and from working-class families. She’s never tried to be anything else and nor have I. We know our roots.’

Moss and Gallagher became friends following the success of Oasis during the 1990s Britpop era.

Googlebox launched on screens in 2013 and became the surprise hit of the year and has been equally as successful this year.

The show regularly sets Twitter alight as viewers are bowled over with its depiction of ordinary folks and the dynamics of their relationships and family lives.

The format has been sold all over the world, with American and Chinese broadcasters first in the queue to snap up the show.

David Bowie has won the Best British Male prize at this year's Brit Awards - but he was way to cool to turn up, sending Kate Moss in his place.

As his "representative on earth" Kate walked to the stage looking cooler than cool wearing original Bowie's original Ziggy Stardust costume - first worn by the icon at his 1972 Rainbow Concert.

Presenting the award, Noel Gallagher, looking particularly glam in his jeans and trademark jacket, told the audience: "You didn't think he would actually be here? He is too cool for this s**t".

Noel Gallagher Performs At Kate Moss' Birthday Party

Noel Gallagher sung to Kate Moss at her 40th birthday party.

The former Oasis star was cheered on by a number of guests as he broke into the catchy acoustic of 'Happy Birthday' at 6am yesterday (19.01.14) in celebration of the supermodel's milestone age.

Kate - who kicked off her celebrations with a posh lunch on Thursday (16.01.14) - reportedly spent £30,000 on entertainment for the big bash at her Cotswolds home on Saturday night (18.01.14).

Florence and the Machine, Mark Ronson, Soul II Soul and Massive Attack performed in yurts in the garden, while there were also tarot card readings, fire jugglers and face-painters on hand throughout the Glastonbury-themed party.

The blonde beauty reportedly paid out a hefty £80,000 on spirits and an endless supply of champagne to keep her guests entertainment.

Uma Thurman, Naomi Campbell and Stella McCartney were just a few of her famous friends in attendance, but all mobile phones were to be handed in at the door to stop any drunken photos being uploaded to Twitter or Instagram.

A source told The Sun newspaper: ''Everyone knew it was going to be a wicked party, which it was.

''It was truly epic and isn't even over yet... ''

Meanwhile, Kate hired the dining room at a local pub last night (19.01.14) for her and the remaining guests who were still standing after a boozy four days of partying.

Kate Moss Lived With Noel Gallagher In The 1990s?

Kate Moss held a predictably lavish launch party for her new book, Kate: The Kate Moss Book at 50 St James Street, London, this week.

After spending the early evening signing copies of the tome at Marc Jacobs' bookshop in Mayfair, Moss arrived at the bash to be greeted by the likes of Bob Geldof, Noel Gallagher, Florence Welch, Alison Mosshart and Donna Karan.

WWD.com's reporter said "It was hard to move at the party for Kate Moss' new book without coming nose-to-nose with a glass of Veuve Clicquot - or a famous person," and they caught up with Mr Gallagher to chat about the heady 1990s when his group Oasis and Ms Moss moved in similar circles. "She actually lived with me for a while," he revealed, "There would be more people waiting outside my flat to see her than there were for me. I would pop out to the shops and people would ask me, 'Is Kate in? Can you get me her autograph?"

The pair met at a part in 1994, though Manchester-born Noel had no idea who Kate was, despite her being the most famous model in the world. "I had just moved down from Manchester and was not that familiar with the London scene. Two weeks later, I was in America and her face was everywhere, on billboards, on every magazine."

As WWD.com's reporter moved downstairs, the party appeared to get worse. Quickly.

Noel Gallagher Rounds Off 150 Date World Tour In Style

Noel Gallagher rounded off his 150-date world tour in typical rock ’n’ roll style – with a 4.30am finish on the dancefloor.

The former Oasis man played a belter of a gig to a packed Shepherd's Bush Empire – one of the best venues in London.

The crowd lapped it up, especially Angel Child, Aka... What A Life and his acoustic version of Supersonic.

Kate Moss, Lara Stone and David Walliams watched from the balcony as he signed off an amazing 18-month campaign with his High Flying Birds.

Kasabian's Serge Pizzorno also watched from the wings, nodding in appreciation.

The party rolled on at Home House into the wee hours – with some seriously ropey dancing to David Bowie hits towards the end of the night.

The cost to put on the free bar probably negated all profits from the tour, though. Not that Noel needs the money. Top gig, epic night.

Noel Gallagher On Love, Life, Liam And Heaven On Earth

Rocker Noel Gallagher believes his wife is a real-life angel who helped him quit his rock and roll ways for good.

The former Oasis guitarist told how he met Sara MacDonald in an Ibiza club during his wild days — and he’s never looked back.

In a candid interview on RTE’s Meaning of Life with Gay Byrne, the singer said: “My wife is an angel to me — and a real one.

“She appeared out of the smoke in a nightclub when I was at my lowest and I’ve never looked back since then.”

The 45-year-old married the Scottish beauty earlier this year after 12 years — and he told Gay he believes he has finally found true happiness. He said: “My wife is still my best friend in the world.

“I still love her dearly. The meaning of life for me is watching your kids grow up and growing (old) with your wife.”

Noel, who has two children with Sara and a 12-year-old daughter Anais with ex-wife Meg Matthews, also told told how he and younger brother Liam, 40, took steps to patch up their long-running row after their mum, Peggy, intervened.

Noel explained: “She never takes sides. Christmas just gone she said, ‘I’ve told him to call you and I’m telling you to call him so it’s about time you spoke’. We exchanged texts on Christmas Day. Liam doesn’t have a phone as he is always losing them so you’ve got to text his missus.”

But Noel, who has found solo success with High Flying Birds, insisted he doesn’t miss playing alongside the volatile singer.

He said: “I’m not wistful and nostalgic. If I hear Oasis songs on the radio I don’t think, ‘Oh God, wouldn’t that be great?’”

The songwriter is proud of his Irish heritage — Peggy is from Charlestown in Co Mayo, while dad Tommy grew up in Duleek, Co Meath — and the family travelled from Manchester on regular holidays.

But Noel told how he no longer speaks to his violent dad, who separated from his mum while he was still a teenager.

He said: “I don’t think he was an alcoholic. I just think he was a bit of a rubbish husband. The 1970s was a tough time in Manchester not only for working class people — but for Irish people with the Troubles.

“There wasn’t a lot of work, but I don’t look back on that time with any regret or sadness. It kind of makes you what you are. After my mam and dad split up we still (saw) him because he only lived about 200 yards up the road.

“My mam never said anything like, ‘You can’t see him’. He still had his own firm and we still did a bit of work with him, but soon after that we kind of became men.

“Then you go off and do your own thing. It’s not shocking for families to become estranged, particularly a family of boys when they start doing their own thing.”

Noel, who was regularly in trouble with the police in his teens, also told how music saved him from a life of crime. He said: “(My mother) kind of seen that me and my other two brothers weren’t bad lads. We come from quite a large council estate in Manchester and we were all lads and my dad was working away and we never really seen him as a father figure.

“You were kind of out there in the Wild West almost and it was all going on... crime and drugs and all sorts of thing.

“I am just glad I got through the other side and found something in music that took me in a different direction.”

During the early days, Oasis became famous for their hard-partying rock-and-roll lifestyle. They drank, took drugs, fought, and made celeb friends such as Mick Jagger, Kate Moss and Johnny Depp.

But Noel told how he decided to put an end to his wild ways after waking up from a bender to find his house full of strangers. He explained: “There came a point for me in 1998 when I went to bed one night thinking, ‘This is the greatest thing ever. I am living the dream. I’m like the new Keith Richards’.

“I woke up the next morning and thought, ‘This is boring, I hate all these people’. I’ve never done it since.”

Blues supporter Noel also told veteran broadcaster Gay, 78, how all his dreams came true this year when Man City finally won the Premier League in May.

He smiled: “It means everything, I’ve been supporting that team since I was five or six. For 40 years I haven’t seen them do anything really.

“I wouldn’t give up my kids or my family for City winning the League but I’d give up a few No1s, for sure. I have had nine so I’d give up about four of those.”
